It was as though my mum used that book as a punishment for me when I was little.

If I talked too much, danced too much, ate too much, played too much...... She would tell me to go bring my brighter grammar or queen's primer cry

Even after reading the book, my mum would ask me to start from the first page again. cry

Then I'll start ;

RIP mam. I'd thought P.A. Ogundipe was a man.

I donated my copies of Brighter Grammar series to my school library a few years ago.

I remember that time I just arrived Lagos,I couldn't read nor write....
My teacher been an Igbo woman would punish me whenever I interact with her in Igbo language because I can't speak English.....she would give me brighter grammer, master English and dictionary to practice.
It was really tough for me to the extent she told one Yoruba girl back then to assist me in English language during class free period....

That book really helped me

Well, not exactly. It was originally written by C. E. Eckersley. After Eckersley, two other British grammarians updated it and made a new edition. Later, Ogundipe contributed to the making of an African edition of the book.

God rests your soul. You impacted my life and I just bought a few copies of your books from a bookshop a few weeks ago.

I still don't understand why textbooks like brighter grammar and NOEC will be expunged from Nigeria list of books only to be replaced with some Mickey mouse textbooks.

Brighter grammar is the only textbook that teaches English language in Nigeria. But Nigerian student started struggling to pass when some desperate arthour flooded the market with their books that looks like polical campaign among rivals. I went back to brighter grammar after secondary school and I discovered that the secret to queen English was totally unlocked in the book.

Rest In Peace Ma.

Is it not an insult that people like these never get the kind of recognition they deserve from our government?
sadly that is the question we are forced to ask .

Brighter Grammar. Great books that helped many to pass almighty Waec English with C6 or higher in those days. Are the books still in print? Sadly, even if they were, where are the readers?

If all graduates of universities, Polytechnic and Colleges of Education conscientiously go through Brighter Grammar books 1-4, we would see tremendous improvement in Nigerians' English language communication.

Just go through Nairaland or FB and see weird expressions. Soon they would say English is not their mother tongue. Who says competence in a foreign language diminishes your understanding of your native language? Achebe and Soyinka speak much better Igbo and Yoruba than all you 'murderers of English'.

A sloppy person is sloppy everywhere.

That book is tough. After mastering New General Mathematics, I tried larcombe but had to drop it for its use of old units
