Only in Nigeria do you build shopping malls in tourist resorts. If these Nigerians realize how malls are convenient and cheaper than their shops or dukas - they would not be still doing informal shopping in rats infested dukas.

I don't know how you can grow the economy if not through formal trade...that is win win for everyone...from manufacturers..suppliers...consumers..gov and everyone in there.

Nigerians have this perception that malls or supermarkets - are more expensive - than in their shops - while the opposite is actually true - Malls are able negotiate cheaper deals and pass those benefits to consumers.

Differentiate btw absolute and relative poverty. Even in US or any developed world - there are people who are classified as poor. For example anybody earning say less than 20K USD per annum would be poor in US...but they have nearly zero absolute poverty.

Absolute or international poverty line - there is very little of that in South Africa - while Nigeria are leading the world.

Going off tagents again. Back to topic - Kenya started to formalize its retail - when consumers found the malls to be cheaper and more convenient than the informal hawkers or traders. So what drive Kenya formal retail spaces...is not the tourist..but average kenyan.

There is an incredible opportunity for Nigeria retail space - but well I am not sure about running a generator the whole day in a supermarket - formal trade will help formalize your economy - and everyone will be happier - except a few inefficient shop keepers who will use their income.
