There are Many entrances to a market.

You can buy 1million units of a company that has consistently paid a div or ₦2+

You can do 2*500,000 units of such to split the exposure.

You can do 1M units of ₦1+ div, and 250k units of the two above.

Hope you know this isn't the first oil price crash?

One happened between 2014 till 2016. That was when all the banks took serious impairments for years(till 2018 sef).

I believe they must have learnt their lessons and hedge their risk appropriately.

If you downgrade a country, the banks will have same downgrades as well. You can't have a bank do well when the country is downgraded.

The risk to Nigeria is oil price. Some of the casualties of the low oil price are starting to show up in the US shale industry. One oil and has firm declared bankruptcy last week. More to come in the US.

That is why Trump wants to broker peace between Russia and Saudi to limit the number of US Oil workers that will be unemployed.

The first casualty in Nigeria will be the oil service industry. They will lay lots of them off as IOCs start cost cutting, reduction in capital spending and streamlining of activities.

Nigerian banks wicked o. E be like say you never hear who dem do something before. grin grin

The cycle is normal. Any Nigerian oilfield veteran can attest to that.

And our banks, reminds me of how 2 jack-up sisters got moored at Lagos Marina. Nobody dey look Uche face

A FRESH PERSPECTIVE ON LAFARGE WAPCO

Looking through the current financials of WAPCO, it seems that the company is now on a good path to resurgence !!
But then, someone might say; U have always criticized the coy in the past, so what has changed?
Well, the result has changed, I would simply answer !!
Good a thing, they drew their inference using the phrase; 'in the past'.
Like I always tell folks;

"I know of a man who was 'drowned in the vicissitudes of the stock market'. ...his pathways was built around the PAST than the future.
...until the PRESENT left him behind !!"
~Sinclair

With WAPCO, it will be better to adopt a present and forward looking approach than relying on the past at this time.
Why, u may ask;
3 factors are @ play here(though now in the opposite direction)

1) LAFARGE' current FX denominated loans are HEDGED.
The company learnt a bitter lesson after it had a combined FX related loss of near N37B between 2016 to 2017. ...The aftermath of which became extremely difficult for them to come off from.
What it has now done is to seek fx cover/protection for its dollar related loans from the CBN. ...which was done via a non-deliverable forward contract format.
The interpretation of this is that LAFARGE is well covered should the CBN decide to devalue the Naira later this year or anytime for that matter.

2) The company is no longer working for the banks as was the case prior to this time.
Cost line accruals from their high debt burden has been eased out by near 90% following the many delaveraging efforts from back to back rights, the divestment of their South African arm(which was loss-making for the most part) and some internal structural changes.

3) Efforts @ restructuring and innovative drives aimed @ romping up revenue(from more sales) and boosting earnings.

Any Jack will agree that these 3 factors(working against the company at the time) was mainly the drag it suffered. ...particularly in the last 8 quaters.
But with these factors now playing in favour of it, the company is now in a great position to MANAGE and OPTIMIZE COST and boost earnings going forward.
Current financial print(H1 2019) also lends much credence to this.

The sooner we learn to align as soon as we can see through the future, the BETTER !!
From where I am standing, It does appear that it is now well with Mr WAPCO !!

Again, NOT a recommendation.

I am betting on this company(LARFAGE WAPCO) delivering exceptionally well(in terms of VALUE) in the mid to long term !!

Great to know that the company is among 3 quoted coys that were recently granted a 3 years pioneer tax relief(a sought of tax holiday) by the Federal Govt.(refer to link above)
Add that to the fact that the company is antifragile(shielded) considering the present Fx related challenges(their loan book is well hedged) and then the great turnaround in margins, and ur guess can well be as good as mine !!

...the other 2 quoted coys on PTR are FIDSON and OBU CEMENT.
At their present mkt price, I like the former(fidson), but LOVE and prefer WAPCO ahead of the latter(obu).

It is well.

Investors are funny. They would be lining up to bid at 9.75 when there are offers at 9.80.

Tomorrow same investors would be scrambling to buy at more than 10 naira per share grin

Get in and lock urself inside if u can. wink cheesy grin
That should be the best move for a mid to long term investor. ...except if u are purely a trader, which by the way, might not be the best strategy for a coy like NB at this time.

U may not see such prices after now.

NOTE: Due diligence still applies.

My worry with NB is the stiff competition from IB and other cheap brands in their industry and difficulty to prune operating costs.

Caution is recommended on this stock.

Abeg, if you didn't sell at a loss, no need to regret anything. Many opportunities are still available in the market. I remembered when I said I was going to buy WAPCO at sub N9, earlier this year, I received e-stones on my head. Eventually, we joined the bus between 8.66 and 9.00. No one can predict the market. Own your decision and move on!

Anyway, I’ve emptied half of my holdings( not with much regret though).

Na this one you call full bid? The bids no plenty naa. If I put my small units up for sale e go just enter offer sharply.

On another note, I am not too impressed with this result. Q3 2019, profit after tax was 20billion with EPs at 1.28. Now full year profit after tax is now 22billion EPs 1.44. It shows they only made 2billion in q4. That's not too good.
I am also disappointed at the dividend declared. To be sincere with you I expected N4 and above, given the earnings from SA business disposal but they would rather send all to their parent company by way of debt servicing.

BUA cement will come down to the level of Lafarge. BUA cement can't pay a dividend of N1.00 per share.

That will amount to a total dividend of N34 billion,
