What do you mean by contradicting myself? The evidence we need exists in DOZENS, if not scores of studies that show that learning outcomes are better when learning takes cognizance of all aspects of personality development. I do not even have a single reference to give you because this is an established fact in the discipline!

You mentioned international best practices.

Do you have the tiniest glimmer of an idea what international best practices are in this area?
And yet, you want your opinion to override decades of cognitive and educational psychology research Do you see why I think you are an ITK?
Mr Lecturer spare us the verbose bombast and address the specific issue of 12 years
In the UK the age is 11 have they gone astray?

First of all leave that story of what you studied. It is irrelevant
What do you mean by
Comprehending the learning experience?
If we have graduates with book knowledge and no application knowledge as you call it then the solution is that everyone must be 12 before starting secondary school?

What kind of reasoning is that?

What you studied is meaningless if it does not influence reasoning

That a problem exists does not mean anything will fix it
That is like saying we should drink bleach for coronavirus
Well, your opinion is ur prerogative but I know it is a welcome development. If bleach cures corona, I can assure that a clinical approach will be developed and you will drink it.

Double promotions, especially back in the days.
Despite the fact that I did Nursery 3, I found myself in secondary school at 9yrs. Still graduated from uni at almost 25, strikes and all.
Most of those 9 year olds in JS1/Basic 7 these days jumped from primary 4.
I jumped from Primary 4, I was 9 in JS1, but I still graduated Uni at 24. I had to repeat JS 2 because we moved to a new state, I had to write WAEC 3 times because of Maths, I got into University at 18, Law is 5 years, plus multiple strikes, we did 6.

Law School another one year, I'm still awaiting Service, imagine I waited till I was 12 for Secondary School admission, plus all these delays.

Na Lagos go lose. Many parents will take their wards to neighbouring States for secondary education.

So you’ll quit your job and move your family to a different state just to evade the system? Or do you intend shipping off your underaged to a boarding house in another state or to go live with relatives because of this?

Parental love and guidance is very important for kids in their formative years. It’s the same anomaly the government is trying to correct. Ship them off early whether they’re ready or not. So sad!

Ah, I see. Now that I have ripped you and the uninformed high horse you were riding (shushing some who told you he was a trained educator), you think I am bombastic.

Now that you have done a quick Google search, your problem is now the +1 year difference from UK?

If they want to address this, government should first of all tackle the practice of imposing age limit as a condition for employment especially in government owned companies. The mad rush for parent to enroll their children to school earlier is meant to beat the time wastage and difficulty in getting admission into higher institution for their children and the inherent disadvantage their children suffer in the highly competitive labor market when age limitation is introduce as criteria in securing employment. So government should go beyond curing the symptom, but rather, the main issue should be addressed.

The reason why most kids skip Primary 6 is finance. Cost saving measures. The high cost of tuition particularly in private schools is responsible for this trend.

With this policy, I see parents in Lagos sending their kids/wards to other states for secondary education

Pious101:
Na wa o...that means they re expected to finish secondary school at 18 years of age when even at 16 some are already in level 1 or 2 in higher institution.

So we all finally concluded that its a bad policy right? There are much better educational policy than that age peg bullshit. How about wheeping kids?thats a crime in South Africa. But we in Nigeria still wheep our children like cows.

I don’t think it’s a bad policy overall rather, it’s a policy that shouldn’t stand alone. It shouldn’t be implemented without dealing with the reasons behind the rush in the first place.

The menace of unemployment and delayed admission should be curbed while introducing and enforcing this age policy.

About whipping kids, lol it’s a very wrong way to discipline children and should have been long abolished.

I'm sure you can calculate the mean age yourself.
Since you need education in this area, I suggest you not just use the UK figure, but extract the ages for all developed nations.
Tell me if the mean+6 ends up closer to 11 years or 12 years.

Are you happy (and properly educated) now?

If you scroll up this thread you will see it has already been mentioned by another person I spoke with that people leave school at 16 in the UK before going to College ( A levels).
I also, mentioned that Obasanjo changed that system which we inherited from the British in 1976

The parents dont need to relocate to another state. They'll simply send their kids to boarding school in those states

Intelligence is not maturity bro. Why rush them into adult hood many of this kids are not prepaid for ... U see a teenager struggling with adult hood life, when the pressure set in ....

Let's say a kid left secondary school at 17. At 21 he is already done with a 4yrs course 22yrs he is done with NYSC.

22yrs in the labour market is still very OK....

And as i said before, people differ. Some people are more mature at 17 than others at 21.

Some people struggle in their late '20s. A guy in my NYSC batch was weeping in his room at 30 because he was afraid of the future after NYSC.

Many of the trolls and clowns here on Nairaland are intheir 20s yet never outgrew their foolishness. And we've just seen a Pastor in his 50s tell the world that 5G is the cause of COVID 19!

If the child is mentally developed enough to enter secondary school at a younger age,why not?
I was 12 years old in SS1.
Common entrance from pri4 passed and when my mates were going to pri 5, I was in Jss1.
Don't delay any child.

so you'll rather drag back those with high IQ because of their age? Remember age and maturity can be mutually exclusive

They should put their IQ into other creative uses while still under the tutelage of their parents/guardian. Going through school gradually doesn’t hamper anyone’s IQ.

Seriously

The point is that this kind of policy should be debated
The age in the UK you mention is 11
How did we arrive at 12 and why impose it on private schools without public debate

Have you forgotten private schools run on license given by government? They run on curriculum set by government. They follow policies of government.

Yes, i agree the age should be 11 not 12 but the point is anything less is not acceptable for the normal child.

You say "why not 10 or 11", but you refused to complete the assignment I gave you. If you did, you would find out that the mean age in developed countries + 6 years of primary school is close to 12 years.

You are trying to tell us there is research. I brought in the UK example to show you that 11 is just as fine .
