With this policy people will leave school at 18
SSS is O level not A levels

The UK practices our old system which Obasanjo changed in 1976
Then you left school after 5 years and entered the university via JAMB or A levels what they call College in the UK

I think we should return to that I don't understand why O levels should be 6 years. It used to be 5 until 1986

Yes. Babangida brought 6-3-3-4 up in 1986 and the five years of secondary school was killed off in 1989.
We have to go back to it, if we are willing. I realised the British have continued to build on their old systems with innovative modifications, and they are the better for it. But Nigerians have ruined it all. That's why we are in this mess.

You say "why not 10 or 11", but you refused to complete the assignment I gave you. If you did, you would find out that the mean age in developed countries + 6 years of primary school is close to 12 years.

I never said 11 is not fine. Your beef all along has never been on whether 11 or 12 is better. Please re-read you history if you've forgotten.

That means that there is not one absolute age ,yes or no?
The UK is fine with 11
and has been for decades
The other thing is in the UK O level education is 5 years compared to 6 in Nigeria

Do not lie about imaginary beef

Stupid rule and illegal too since the 9-3-3 system of education is based on people graduating at 16.

I know some blockheads here are supporting a policy legislated by the troglodytes at the Lagos State Ministry of Education because they feel people who finish school early have an advantage over them. In any case, there's no way they are going to be able to enforce this anyway.

The government has no reason to decide when anybody should go to school. Stupid.

They should put their IQ into other creative uses while still under the tutelage of their parents/guardian. Going through school gradually doesn’t hamper anyone’s IQ.

What exactly does going through school means? People homeschool their children in the US and some of those children even succeed more than those who spend multiple years in public schools.

Parents should be allowed to decide what's best for their kids. Not the fucking government. Some of you won't have sense till you are 25. Allow precocious performers to utilize their intelligence and talents. Don't stunt them with asinine policy.

In any case, there's a zero chance of implementing this.

I swear!!!!!!!! This is the best policy in education sector in recent years. Was still discussing this very crucial issue with woman days ago!!!!

Imagine a scenario whereby some new generation 'sophisticated' parents wants their wards in JSS 1 at the age of 7, 8, 9 or 10 and by the time the kid is 16 or 17, would already be done with university! And then by 19 would be done with nysc and then start working. And for those in majority, may not get a good job at that stage and so, life problems start hitting them with so much frustration which they were not fully prepared or grounded to face and then they resort to drugs, prostitution and other dangerous vices just to keep face or survive!

And there is where the challenge starts. Because they are still teenagers with the enormous mantle of grown adult's headaches, they become so directionless in life especially because most Nigerian men don't intend to settle down maritally or even take life very serious till they are 30 years and above. FACT!

Come to clubs on the island and you would weep for the new generations our so called enlightened and cosmopolitan parents are now raising. You would see young girls of 15, 16 from mostly Christian and Religious higher institutions of learning like Covenant, Babcock (the Babcock lady giving head last year in the viral video comes to mind here), Redeemers, Mountain Top, Caleb, Unilag, Leads, Alkhima, Afe Babalola, etc, flooding some of the most exquisite, expensive and classy night clubs on the island, in Owerri, Benin, PH, Abuja every and every weekend!

Or why do you think new exquisite clubs are opening up every other day in Lagos and those cities mentioned? High rate of slay queens everywhere? Or astronomical numbers of mamalawos on IG? Or the fact that weed, codeine, and other 'get high' drugs are recording the craziest sales ever? Its beyond just the fact there are big boys ready to spend but simply because the young and willing underage girls from the higher institutions of learning abounds massively like the sands in the ocean. You see young girls at age 17, 18, 19 among them already having flapping and seriously sagged breasts**.

And you begin to wonder if they are not young girls from so called prestigious and religious universities where security was very tight, where morals were preached and impacted on all fronts, where their parents spend fortunes on them to be in so called best schools?

If you were one brought up in a strict home and responsible background and happen to see things as they are in those cities mentioned, you would weep bitterly.

Don't get get this submission wrong as this is not to generalise that all underaged kids in universities are bad or irresponsible. Far from it. Still a lot are well raised and doing remarkably well even after graduation. Because age at times doesn't translated to maturity. But the danger lies in having kids who are not raised well to fully absorb the crude shocks of life in the majority!

How can you explain so many 16 years olds in 400 level in universities but are already deeply enmeshed in drug abuse? Or the girls that have committed several abortions that they have lost counts? Or those who have been to 100's of exquisite clubs in and out of the country at age 16/17? Thats why you see so many childish comments on social media posts and forum especially on Nairaland in recent years and you begin to wonder, who are these so called young adults with terribly childish mentality? How can you then explain the highest numbers of young boys and girls committing suicides in recent years when we all know Nigerian rarely commit suicide? By time the damage has been seriously done on those boys and girls, you now see their mother's en masse in churches and other religious gatherings seriously praying and fasting for God to touch the soul of those already destroyed children.

If the child is mentally developed enough to enter secondary school at a younger age,why not?
I was 12 years old in SS1.
Common entrance from pri4 passed and when my mates were going to pri 5, I was in Jss1.
Don't delay any child.

Do you know what curriculum means?

There is a curriculum for Primary 1-6, JSS 1-3, SSS 1-3, 100level to final year of tertiary school, 3 semesters of Post graduate and 6 semesters of PhD.

The point is, what is taught in primary 5 is different from primary 6 and what is thought in JSS 1 depends on what was thought in Primary 1-6.

You need to finish the curriculum of Secondary school to write SSCE. You need to finish the curriculum for a tertiary institution to be award a degree, Diploma etc why should someone who didn't finish the curriculum of Primary school be award certificate of Primary Education?

Every level of education has a curriculum, finish it, write the exams and pass then collect the certificate.

There are certain levels of our community were the primary cert is basic requirement, it is equally important for a primary certificate holder to be fully qualified as a degree holder is fully qualified.

If the a primary 4 pupil skips primary 5 and 6 to JSS 1, he is now in a class with Primary 6 pupils who were actually taught some things the Primary 4 pupil will not understand or take long understanding. This will drag even the teacher backwards when he asks for affirmation, "do you understand". The best primary 4 student becomes below average since he is not among his peers.

Principles of the teaching profession is undermined by simply skipping a class by 1 student. In Nigeria, no one cares as the evil has been overlooked leading to what you think its normal but its far from it.

If you have never had that type of challenge, i had it first hand.

I got admitted to Engineering in the university without ever doing further mathematics. To make it worst, my name came out on third list so by the time I settled to attend lectures, on my very 1st lecture, Integration was introduced and and CA test was a week away. You can't understand integration without understanding differentiation which is the previous lesson. I failed that course but by next year and after attending proper lectures, I got an A on the same course. In this case, I was forced to redo the course but no one forces a primary 5 pupil to attend primary 6 before now. The result is a deficient pupil pushed forward without the proper knowledge.

In the UK where a 19yr old gets a PhD, they pull out him out from regular class, a dedicated tutor delivers him the requisite curriculum at an expedited rate to achieve the feat. Here, we think its by skipping class. Very very wrong.

Do you even know how home schooling is controled in the US. You think government allows just anyone to withdraw their child from school in the name of home schooling. Every US state has a regulation or another. In one way or the other, the parent will account for comformity with standards. At the end, the home schooled child will still write public exams. What matters is the level of preparedness.

Yes. Schools have been known to give admissions on the basis of essays, interviews, performances and projects. Exams like SAT may help admissions but not all students entering University write them. Each school decides its own admission criteria unlike Nigeria where everything is legislated.

We play and pray too much in this country!

Why should an 8 year old be in primary 6 in the first place? He's not mature enough to handle the mental and emotional rigour of high school.
That's how I saw a 3yrs old assignment book who's in nursury 3 and can't even pronounce her name let alone read what's in the book and one of the questions say, 'where was Moses born?. I turned to the mother and asked her, do you pay School fees for this thing? How can someone ask a little kid who should be learning how to poo, eat play and sleep, where Moses was born. This baby's brian can retain such information yet. And parents pay school fees for this rubbish. I can't punish my child and waste my money paying fees to a school that doesn't know what and what to teach a child

Just like a boss ahead of his contemporaries.
Lagos is waking up to address the emotional and social deficiencies of this rush where children don't mature before moving to the next stage of academic ladder.

It's a giant stride and I appreciate their concerns. Maturity is key and it will help us to challenge the pains, stress and headaches parents and lecturers face in school dealing with such immature lads.

Wise man na wa for you ooo.

Can you do some analysis? Will you tell the employers to follow Lagos state?

Thank God we have 37 states.

I pity Lagos school operators.

Mass exodus from all these yeye school environments in Lagos to other states.

It will help children to learn their local languages.

Bros move your children to join my children atKingdom Heritage and faith academy sharp sharp

At that age, I was in ss1 but here am I, almost 18 and still struggling to enter the University, despite the fact that I never failed jamb....... This is really bad because admission into universities isn't automatically guaranteed upon graduation.
I keep saying it that despite the fast that our educational system is dying, rushing kids through school and skipping classes is one of the major reasons there's mass failure in waec, jamb and other exams. The child might be very intelligent but not psychologically fit for some of the knowledge they acquire at a young age. The brain matures with age and when a chind who's suppose to be learning abc is learning further mass, the brain same to malfunction leading to poor performance.
