Tiny but the sting will bring hell and destruction from above.
This Tucano jet is specially designed for COIN operation and quote me there is no assets in its class that cheap, easy to maintain, that can bring destruction to terrorist, precise munition and targeting system .......etc

I know why some people don’t like this jet, one it’s a turbo-aircraft and solely for COIN and it can never be used for air power projection. But we have a serious internal problem we need to deal with, we can always get aircraft meant for our air space cover and power projection in the nearest future. Until few days ago no body knew the army was doing some serious shopping which deal was activated almost a year ago.
Who and some equipment are still coming in from Russia and Eastern Europe.

The army needs to Invest more in battlefield communication and coordination. Our Intelligence gathering agencies are asleep.

My grouse with the super tucano is that the aircraft doesn't seem to have sufficient armor protection to be able to withstand potential aa gun attacks and whatever BH/iswap might want to fire at it. Because BH isn't fielding manpads now doesn't mean they won't try to shoot down our air assets. Theyve fielded aa guns before. We need something that'll survive any BH onslaught while performing 2-3 hrs cas for the army. My 2 cents.

JUST thinking out loud, Isnt it even possible for na to buy a couple of big military cargo plane and maybe contract the ruskies to retrofit it if its not possible to buy it ready made because of great satan (USA)?

We don't need to contract the Russkies. South Africa is more than capable of turning just about any cargo plane into a gunship.

A gunship like the AC-130 is a very expensive piece of kit. We can buy 3 fighter jets for one gunship.

Not economical.

So what about buying a standard military cargo transport and outfitting it?

Now, I'm not disputing the fact that the political class is corrupt and have been embezzling funds for buying weapons, but when these funds were made available, were we allowed to get them? Do you know the number of arms deals involving Nigeria that was blocked under the guise of "human rights violations" by those who sell tons of weapons to saudi and UAE yearly?
This problem is both internal and external, the earlier we accept that that of external is the one destroying us most the better.

Enough of that Arms embargo nonsense, how long have Iran, Cuba & Venezuela been under arms embargo?
Did it stop Iran from ranking 14th militarily ahead of Israel, Australia & Spain?
Leahy's ban was too narrow for any sensible government to complain about in a life & death situation, how about countries like Libya under a global arms embargo have they complained? did a global arms embargo stop Gen Haftar from attacking the Tripoli government?

Sensible leaders break umbrages to get results, Nigerian politicians sell dumb narratives to their dumb populace.

The same government under ban got Chinese MRAPS, got a Private military contractor for elections, bought the first set of Chinese combat drones. When its convenient, they remind you of Leahy's ban, did Leahy's ban stop them from stashing your money abroad?

If the US refused to sell him a Tucano, he would've gone to Russia to get a Yak 130 or its Chinese equivalent after all, Obasanjo got all our interceptors from China, stop making excuses for that loser!

US will never sell AC 130 or F 22 raptor to even its closest allies.

Closest comparable to an AC 130 we can buy is the AC-235/295 with 30mm canons, missiles and sensors.

And? There are many other things the US does not sell its closest allies. Ever seen an American ally using a Nimitz Aircraft Carrier? And why would the allies buy the Raptor when the JSF is supposedly miles better?

Look, building a gunship is not rocket science. You just have to sit down and understand what you need and the tools you need for the job. You can even model it on computers to know how the armament would change the flight behavior of the plane. There is no science to it. In Vietnam the US even put gun and rocket pods, plus miniguns on light planes. Nothing is stopping us from copying that, but with more modern modifications.

F22 Raptor still possesses some technology and components more advanced than the F35. The latter was made when costs for The Raptor kept spilling over budget hence they decided on an alternate version which became F35.

Besides gunships can range from extremely elaborate like AC130 which can handle recoils like from 105mm howitzers to modular ones like the M27 Praetorian.

If some people actually understood COIN warfare then they wouldn't be saying Nigeria should've gotten more T-72s.................

Firstly because its COIN warfare, you aint going to drive columns of Tanks in to the battle field!! thus what's the point in buying 100 T-72, when you are only going to have a handful in the battle field in the first place?

Secondly what's the most common anti tank weapon used by rebels/insurgence? its the RPG, Now I don't know if any of you have seen what an RPG-7 can do to a T-72? it cooks it, that's what it does. The VT4 on the other hand would shrug of an RPG-7 hit as if its nothing, the only thing that can destroy a VT4 is modern ATGMs and modern RPG-28s which aren't freely available to Insurgence like BH.

Coupled with the SH-5 105mm(C130 transportable) and ST1 AFV this has been so far one of the smartest Nigerian defence force acquisitions to date!!
very correct jlin, but an rpg at the rear of the vt4 is as good as a dead tiger tank of the olds, i loved thr vt4 immediately i saw it but when i saw the engine compartment behind and what could happen when hit , i only pray they initate cage armor immediately to protect the rear. As for the T 72, the fact the turrent holds the auto loader and its to small causes the cook off, a bit of ERA extensively arranged can reduce the chances of a cook off by half

We need standard military cargo aircrafts to transport our troops. We don't even have enough transport planes, why would we need a gunship similar to the AC-130?

Someone said 15 for $600m. Very cost ineffective bro. I Don't think that's true sha. And from the screenshot, it isn't what we need. We are not fighting in a low cost environment. we need heavily built, full cas attack aircraft that have endurance capabilities and can pummel BH 3 hours nonstop. These tucanos isn't just it. We could have gotten more su25s, mi35, ka25s, a ton of attack drones and the Russian equivalent of the ac130 and b52 bomber.

I think the air force leadership needs some real punishment/sanctioning. They're pretty much the reason why our bases fall to BH and our boys have to retreat from time to time. In the general Adeniyi video, man complained they came under at least 100 RPGs fired from BH. They were flanked on all sides. So many stories of no air support during a 2-3hr gunfight whereas in the us army it would have been the opposite. Na air force bombers go dey do d work while marines go dey flex.
the super tucano is perfect, bro in CAS apart from payload, loiter time is essential to ensure that all hostiles are down, the su 25 frogfoot or the Yak 130 which is my personal favorite are all jet propelled aircraft.

Meaning they have limited loiter time over a specific area, a bit to fast and definitely will be out od juice in no time,

The tucanon is turbo propped and has a longer flight time to loiter , engage, re-engage and provide fire support.

Its a good buy for me i am just a bit concerned about the price and the delivery date but i know why though

The su 25 and all should be complemented as a heavy CAS strike platforms not full CAS platforms

Toju won't you ever tire of blaming Obama for the inadequacies of the Nigerian army and airforce? Did Obama also stop us from buying stuff from China, South Africa, India, Russia and Egypt? Or Eastern Europe? Doesn't South Africa manufacture Super Hinds and even the Rooivak? The Tucano you are talking about, are there not equivalents we can get cheaper and sooner elsewhere? The weapons we use now, are most not from Russia and the Soviet Union, so why the sudden love for American weaponry?
And as regards heavy lift helicopters, don't the Russians have the Mil Mi 26 Halo? What stopped us from buying these massive choppers as Algeria long since have? Or what stopped us from buying masses of Mil Mi 8 and 17s? What stopped us from buying platforms from other countries other than the US and massively upgrading the stuff we already have by giving them better avionics, engines, weapons and sensors?

Kindly leave Obama out of this please and find someone else within Nigeria to blame. Your excuse is wack and weak and I am very tired of hearing shit like that.

You won't get anything from South Africa, Egypt, India or Israel in a US embargo, they will have to seek the permission of arms services committee to sell to you.[color=#000099]

Lol. In my opinion the F-22 Raptor is the best plane ever built bar none. No other jet even comes close to it. This is all the more remarkable considering it is not even new and was released decades ago.
The JSF on the other hand... If you read my earlier write up, I said the JSF is "supposedly" better. I don't agree with that assessment at all, but who am I to question the wisdom of the Pentagon.
As for gunships, we don't need very elaborate ones. It merely needs to have FLIR so it can work at night, a kind of Firefinder radar for detecting gunshots and long range for loitering over the battlefield. It would be best to use it at night since the terrorists won't be able to see it then. It should have some armor too and must be heavily armed with bombs and cannons.

Oldies ....... 80's when algerian Mig 25 was playing in the skies of Morocco and Spain with no one to stop them.

CIA report :

uncovered ” CIA ” report confirms that Algerian MiG-25s fighters violated Moroccan airspace And the neighboring countries

Thanks to the declassified documents of the CIA, an interesting fact became known : presumably until 2008, Morocco did not have the capabilities to intercept MiG-25 fighters .

as it was mentioned in CIA report, a two MiG-25s entered the Moroccan airspace in the southern part of the country till the Atlantic Ocean and went home through Western Sahara

The air superiority of the Algerian Air Force over its Moroccan counterpart was evident in that period through the fighter models that were owned by Algeria at that time.

The report also stated that between the years 1982-1983 there were also many “suspicious” MiG-25 flights over Morocco.

the repeated flight of Algerian fighters over Morocco and the violation of neighboring countries such as Spain led to the countries making decisions to conclude deals to repel the Algerian breakthroughs. After that, Spain obtained qualitative deals from F-18 fighters and Aegis systems

Yeah, I'm quite surprised by Algeria and Egypt's case, even Serbia (a strong Russian ally) was threatened when they wanted to buy the S400 sad sad

I think Nigeria should go for Russian weapons. They're cheaper, reliable and their delivery would not have any political undertone. We should have gone for the Su 25 equipped with latest avionics instead of going for that Super Tucano which won't be delivered at anytime soon. The Su 25 is the perfect platform for this COIN war judging by its performance against terrorists in Syria.

The problem lies with the decision makers and I doubt the president's situational awareness of what's going on in the North East. The man is senile and old, but I don't really blame him. angry angry

Buying Russian strategic weapons in 2020 is different from Jonathan's era.
