It was definitely the right decision. He was not fit throughout that 1994 but kept hiding it in order to try and make history. That was the era when players used to hide their injuries in order to play for their country.

Ikpeba hired limousine to take himself to the airport after Italy beat us(while others used the team bus). He was angry that he didn’t get any opportunity to shine in the tournament.

Rather than faceless fans many of whom probably didn’t watch peak Baresi I would go with the registered club fans and Serie A footballers association members who voted Baresi as AC Milan Player of the Century and Serie A Player of the Century respectively.

He had the higher peak although Maldini had the longer career.

Baressi all the way! This man was excellent at reading and predicting moves minutes before they occur. His timing with tackles and ability to obstruct plays were golden and only a very few have been able to replicate this. Baba was on another level! In 94, even though Italy lost and Baresi missed his PK, Brazil, especially Bebeto/Romario saw "shege" for him hand. They could not get past him, infact when they figured he was too fast and quick at reading ground passes, they switched to lobbing passes, thinking since he is short he would not catch up, 'Who sigh!!!!" Baba was using over head kicks to get ahead even before the ball reach Brazilian forwards!!!!

Baresi is the golden standard and represented the Calcio Italia's identity (defense/ strategy) as the game transitioned from the 80's into the 90's (new generation). He was skilled at passing, with a good on-ball technique which was near non-existent for defenders in that era and while he is short, it was never a short coming. I think his technique and finesse was what separated him his generation of Italian/ world defenders. We are talking about the only Italian player in history to be voted "Player of the Century" and look no further than the skills I highlighted above.
