COVID-19: Onyeama Says Evacuation Of Nigerians Abroad Starts Next Week by valentineuwakwe(m): 11:29pm On Apr 20, 2020
The Federal Government will next week commence the evacuation of Nigerians stranded abroad on account of the coronavirus pandemic .

It said two airlines had agreed to bring back the citizens at affordable rates .
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, who disclosed this during a briefing by the Presidential TaskForce on COVID- 19 in Abuja on Monday , noted that the nationals would be brought back in batches of 200.

Over 2,000 Nigerians in United States , United Kingdom , United Arab Emirates , China and other countries had registered for the evacuation after agreeing to subject themselves to mandatory coronavirus testing and 14 -day quarantine on arrival in Abuja or Lagos.

The minister stated that the government has been working to put in place adequate isolation centres to accommodate the returnees on arrival in the country .

He said , “ We have just signed and agreed with two airlines, we negotiated what we feel is very good rates . Since the evacuees are expected to pay, we wanted to get as good a deal as possible . Now, that ’ s done .

“ The next challenge is accommodation ; everything has to be absolutely ready . We actually determined when we start that everything should go very smoothly and so, we really want to take all the necessary steps to ensure that would be the case.”

Onyeama further explained that government was challenged by insufficient beds at the isolation facilities, hence the decision to fly in 200 persons at a time, adding that the arrangements were being tidied up for the evacuation and quarantine of the returnees.

He noted, “ We are looking at 200 evacuees we can accommodate at a time. Since they are going to be there for two weeks, it means we have to bring 200 back for a period of 14 days before we can bring in another 200 both Abuja and for Lagos. We also have to look at the cities.

“ The most important part at this stage is to secure the planes to bring them back and we have now done that . So, hopefully, if we can tie up the other loose ends, we hope to start maybe towards the end of next week. ”

The minister observed the concern by Nigerians about the possibility of infection importation by the returnees , adding that the government was putting in place mechanisms to monitor the symptoms that may be displayed by the evacuees.

He said , “ We have to put all the precautions we can to minimize that kind of incident , having mechanisms to see what kind of symptoms that are displayed by the intending passengers. We’ ll now choose which countries we want to start with. ”

In batches of 200.

That's according to the available facilities in addition to the cases on ground.

But how are they even coping outside Nigeria in this pandemic?

I hope the federal government would negotiate for the release of Nigerians in China prisons too.

They must not be abandoned in a foreign land .

They will eventually run away from Nigeria after the coronavirus storm calms. The way they say these things as if things are better in Nigeria. What the government should be doing is stamping her foot on the ground against the indiscriminate treatment of Nigerians abroad. Not all about repatriation but building a face for Nigerians. The US consulate has issued a warning to all African-Americans not to go to China and cited the discrimination against blacks in China. The Nigerian consulate is docile and disposable. Anything Nigerian abroad is a magnet of cancer.

I keep saying it, at this point in time, men should be put to work. We need hospitals, we need infrastructures. People should be camped and given opportunities. If the operation in the Oil and Gas has is not halted, then you cannot shut down the economy of Nigeria when the majority of Nigerians are daily earners. Nigerian does not have more cases or deaths than the US but the US is opening, Italy is opening for business. Nigeria just shut everything down as if the economy is self-sustaining. People are poor. A country with a huge margin of disparity between the rich and the poor cannot shut down suddenly. There should be plans and arrangements. Buhari sits down in his Aso rock waiting for countries in the west to discover a vaccine to treat the people over which he presides. What happened to our virologist? How about our research centers? Is it not time to step up our game? The so-called treatment for this virus could be in the home of a herbalist right now. Why aren't we using our resources to the fullest? Chinese brought Tianshi and all those herbal drugs and called them supplements and Nigerians were stupidly buying it. This are the same herbs that you spit on when you go to your villages. Why is the government not using our herbs to full use? Why wait for westerners to breastfeed us? Those fools who saved their money in offshore accounts might just be disappointed soon.

Nigerians do not have hospitals. If you go to government hospitals, you will faint. I went there some years ago and pretended to be sick. I saw things that humans never saw on camera. The doctors show up at 10 am - 11 am and at noon to 2 pm they are out. patients rolling on the floor etc.
No X-ray machines, no blood testing machine (I mean I have this in my own house), when you have to go to do an X-ray, then go to a private specialist to translate the x-ray reading... As a health professional, I spit on the Nigerian health sector.

Speak up now for the government to create a stimulus plan because crime will be like it had never been. Some Nigerians with their servitude attitude. The crime rate will be absolutely unprecedented after this "stay home". People have bills to pay in May. Buhari should have asked Landlords to relax on rents for some months. The government should have consulted all registered businesses. The government should have enforced all top companies to pay their workers' salaries. Buhari should have consulted all state governments to reach out to the grassroots representatives to provide sustenance for daily earners.

Nothing stops the state government from liaising with bakeries to provide bread for people and have some people deliver it to homes. By this, the government can get concretized data.

I am very saddened that a Nigerian will give a fellow Nigerian indomie as relief in this period. Indomie?? What will that do to an adult male? I saw a family given two sachets of Indomie. wonders!!

Some people have a box of indomie for the entire occupants of a 6 flats building. This is sheer evil. Wickedness at its prime.

Mr. Aviation, pls, forget P.H city, in any of ur contingency plans of returning any Nigerians from abroad, we don't want them, Lagos and Abuja has always being cities receiving all major attentions in terms of most important Economic development such as Railway Lines, functional sea ports, Best Energy/power provisions, best health cares, modern roads network, headquarters of all major multinationals companies, headquarters of all important cooperation, best airports, etc.... Niger delta and the entire eastern region has always been neglected/Relegated to the background. So this is truly the best time to carry first and be the biggest in every thing. Thank you.

Have the federal government ruled out the possibilities of importing more cases of COVID-19 into Nigeria with our limited health resources ?
Nigeria may not recover from COVID-19 this year.
