An entry test or a specific jamb cutoff will reduce the inflation of such students to the school.
Edited.
I can bet you that the reasons those Universities write the entrance/qualifying exams is mostly because they have more students applying for less 'spaces'. In the case of NOUN, in fact they are looking for more students as there's no visible limit to the number of students they can handle. ....And our comparisons will be worthwhile if we try to compare NOUN with other Open Universities.
There are shortfalls and as well as advantages. We are all here talking about 30 marks in an assignment for those students who choose to unethically contract their assignments meanwhile there are many conventional Universities out there in Nigeria where students 'sort' to pass all their courses yet the students don't feel this way. Why are we not shouting that to the world? How many of your lectures victimize you? How many of them ask you for money or sex for grade? In conventional Universities in a country as divergent as Nigeria, some people can victimize students even because of tribe, sex (male or female), religion etc but do we have that in NOUN? Even the so-called admissions that they write entry/qualifying exams for. The admissions are marred by gross favouritism and tribalism. Is NOUN admission system not the fairest of systems in Nigeria? Why are we not screaming that to the world?
Inferiority is of the mind and if NOUN students cannot even stand up to push out their strength, no one else will do it better. No matter how the school try, if the students/graduates of NOUN choose to remain with inferior mind, he will remain inferior. Many of the NOUN students and graduates seem to focus on the hole of the doughnut instead of the whole of the doughnut. Focus on your current strength and project yourself instead of feeling inferior for the minor issues.
Happy New Month to everyone here.

NOUN to Begin Virtual Training on Digital Literacy

The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) is to offer a free virtual training programme on some selected digital short courses from May 4, to enhance academic activities.

A statement issued by Mr Ambrose Gowong, Communications Officer, Africa Centre of Excellence on Technology Enhanced learning (ACETEL), stated that the training programme would be anchored in conjunction with CISCO Academy amidst the COVID-19 lockdown.

The statement quoted Prof. Grace Jokthan, Director, ACETEL as saying that the training was part of the skill-based training at NOUN.

If you are mistaking utme for putme, I can send you sources to learn how both came into existence and the reasons for the inventions. Your bet can't outwit what the ex-NUC boss gave out as reason to set up putme. After reading the article below and you still have objections, then cite out your source, I am not a dumb noun product that will accept hypothesis as a theory.

Please read https://dailypost.ng/2016/07/12/how-we-started-post-ume-ex-nuc-boss-okebukola/

Again, you have always talked about sorting in conventional schools and all sorts, If you think there is no sorting in noun 300L and above, then you just need to hear stories. You still can't change the fact that concessional examination is one way to scrutinize the serious students from the lazy ones.

You are quoting what NUC boss said? If they put you in that position, won't you have explanations to give? Every system has its own peculiar issues but I bet you, you didn't pay bribe to get admitted in NOUN grin
I didn't mistaken PUTME for UTME. Along the thread, someone mentioned that prospective students should be given an exam at least even if they can not sit for UTME and my response was a general one and not to your points alone.
NOUN is improving in some areas and with time, things will get better. But for now, you have many things to boast about that the conventional universities can not talk with you.

You are right. There's corruption in every institution and NOUN is not excluded. But I want to let you know that it is not possible to scrutinize lazy students even with putme or ume. The highest that can be done is bring it to a minimal.

NOUN is not a conventional institution and won't operate like the conventional institution. The major focus of NOUN is the workers who at a point will want to improve on their qualifications. I have seen workers enrol in NOUN undergraduate programme simply because they want to switch departments in their organization. Do you suggest these people sit for JAMB? That can't happen. So you see, JAMB can't be used as a criteria for NOUN students.

Secondly, even in conventional institutions, tests are contracted out. NOUN is a distance learning institution and can't determine for you whether you should contract your TMAs or do them yourself. The lazy students and hardworking ones surely are separated when it comes to examination, because the lazy ones won't even score up to 20/70 if they don't read.

NOUN is a very difficult institution to attend and as well an efficient institution that enables all students to read, without which you can't even pass. In conventional institutions, they give you tests, use attendance as marks give you examination. If you fail to meet 75% of attendance in Conventional institutions, you end up not writing exams but that doesn't work.

Well, it is evidence that the greater promotion of students in NOUN these days are young ones who should be schooling in conventional institutions but they choose NOUN. NOUN is aware of this trend and it can't stop it. Everyone deserves to have quality education and I am sure NOUN offers this.

In conclusion, every institution whether NOUN or conventional have their pros and cons, and every institution is trying to seal things up. This is the reason I think NOUN introduced transcript submission for Post graduate studies.

Lol. This is absolutely hilarious. You were prepared to bet for a certain statement which you didn't present its source. So you expect me to believe yours and debunk the knowledge of a professor? There is no need for the ex-NUC boss to lie, take note that at the time he gave such statement, he was already out of office. So what's the essence of lying or covering up? Perhaps, Jamb that was actually organized for such reason didn't lie about it. I am not against noun admitting student strictly, but they should add a little filtering layer to figure out lazy students. Use Jamb or institute a little oral test to screen applicants.

1. If O Level results were trustworthy, we won't have any reasons to doubt students' results.
2. If UTME was faultless, why PUTME?
These are questions begging for answers. All these above have their loopholes as well. The "little oral test" you suggested for NOUN... It is good but difficult of Open Distance Learning. I have people who have done online courses outside Nigeria. The procedure is virtually the same. I guess, the peculiarity of NOUN makes those things a bit difficult to implement. The distance learning outside Nigeria, you don't even have to come to their centres for exams. The exams are all online. We will get there.

Let's all put an end to this argument. From what I have observed, it's getting a bit messy and tempers are flairing.

The whole discussion was not meant to be derogatory, but enlightening based on my observation of things. My observation has been spot on. My concern was for everyone, as it came from a selfless mind. In other words, I cared about the system, the students, and the alumni.

My advice, just like me, once you finish from NOUN and get your certificate, navigate yourself very well. If you have a good result, and you are a responsible person, and you need assistance, you can reach me.

Some of us who have graduated will form an Alumni group, where guidance and assistance can be given to fresh graduates (hopefully, this will last for years). On our part, the few alumni who are pursuing great goals and who are achieving success, and who have decided to form a network, will see how to help other students through guidance and other means.

There are incredibly intelligent NOUN students and graduates, and we are proud of this. The issue I raised was the effect of a conspicuously publicized TMA assistance on the Internet and everywhere else.

There may be corruption in every other university, but they are not conspicuously shown to the public; they are hidden. If your blood is boiling because u misunderstood my statement, then I think u need to sit back and carefully think about what this whole issue is about.

No one is degrading NOUN as an institution!

You did nothing wrong by raising the issue. But to raise the issue without making reference to those publicly soliciting for TMA customers here made it incomplete. I saw no one angry here. You can see from the responses that no one has been insulted or talked to in an ill manner. Instead, points have been presented in matured way which already is to the fact that everyone so far has demonstrated respect for people's opinion. Once again, thank you for raising the issue.
And for those of you still advertising and soliciting for TMA 'customers' on this thread, you have heard from the students. Try and be more discrete and stop damaging the name of the institution.
