Nobody really improved under Mourinho. Maybe McTomminay, cos he got little game time. Pogba, Lukaku, Martial, Rashford, etc. They all kinda stagnated.

Van Gaal is terrible with transfers but he is a philosophy based coach and has a way of changing play pattern that will be long-standing

I have evidence of both as a Bayern fan. Almost all the players he bought were flops but he gave us a new possession-based playing philosophy. The same thing happened at Barcelona flop signings but long-standing philosophy

The thing about LvG is that he shouldn't stay long, once he instils the possession-based system, he tends to overdo it and become stubborn and it might become just possession for the sake of it and the team struggles

After he has stabilized the team, you need to fire him and get another attacking coach who will take it from there. Like Pochetinno

These type of haphazard coaching structure would make a lot of your transfers useless cos a typical counter-attack player would be useless in possesion football and vice versa

Lingard had one outstanding season by his own standards. Happens often. Dele Alli. Benteke. etc. They’ll have a very good year. Then they’ll fail to replicate that form.

LvG seemed to be getting somewhere with the squad. You’ll agree that he won the league titles at Bayern and Barcelona with his “philosophy”.

I’m not LvG-in, the guy has a ton of idiosyncrasies and his signings are usually flops. I just think it would’ve been better if he was allowed to work with those boys for one more year before they find a suitable replacement instead of sacking him prematurely and appointing Mourinho cos they were chasing the league.
