FlordFlorez: I chose dreads in college cause it’s easier to maintain than going to the salon every week which can be costly but I just love the essence of it I was one of those children who went to schools that called hairstyle from chuku to police cap they didn’t let my hair rest see how it’s strong and natural relaxer for kill am die I’m Igbo raised in a Yoruba household tho but all the same it’s just natural There are pastors in my family there are side comments from people but for me when I wash my hair I wash each dread well well every other day. 1 Like |

The History of Dreadlocks BY KNOTTY EMX The following blog excerpt contains an overview of the history of dreadlocks by Knotty EmX. Reprinted with permission. The first known examples of the hairstyle date back to ancient Egypt, where dreadlocks appeared on Egyptian artifacts. Mummified remains of ancient Egyptians with dreadlocks have even been recovered from archaeological sites. The Old Testament also recounts the tale of Samson and Delilah in which a man's potency is directly linked to 'the seven locks on his head' and according to Roman accounts, the Celts were described to have 'hair like snakes' Germanic tribes, Greeks and the Vikings are all said to have worn dreadlocks too. Rastafarianism however is something entirely separate. It was born in the 1930s when Ras Tafari was crowned emperor of Ethiopia. When the emperor was forced into exile during an invasion, guerrilla warriors swore not to cut their hair until the emperor was reinstated. The religion resonated with the ideologies of the day, for example socialism, Marxism, nationalism and black power. It was therefore, seen as a threat to Christianity and came under attack by the authorities that tried to suppress the 'Rasta' movement and imprisoned those who possessed 'ganja'. Rastafarians smoked cannabis because they thought it prompted a clearer state of well - being. Their dreadlocks were thought to be disgusting and frightening, hence the term 'dread' which was later reclaimed by the 'Rasta' community. The hairstyle was later brought into mainstream culture through the worldwide success of reggae artist Bob Marley. Sporting locks himself, he prompted an international interest in the style, and the anti establishment philosophy of Rastafarian culture. Dreadlocks became increasingly popular and there are many reasons in various cultures for wearing them. They can be an expression of deep religious or spiritual convictions, a manifestation of ethnic pride. They can make a political statement, or simply be a fashion preference. This essay on the history of dreadlocks is written by our own Knotty Vic Dicara, from the hardcore bands Beyond, Inside Out with Zack de la Rocha and 108. Reprinted with permission 4 Likes 1 Share |

SKhanmi: If the hair is shaved, the dada will not be there in future. However, especially in Yoruba land, children born with dada are usually not shaved and the hair not combed. Even if the child is not born with dada, some church will ask that the child's hair not be combed and not shaved. So the child will have dada hair 2 Likes |

SKhanmi:this your assertion can't be collaborated by the bible. there are a lot of falsehood everywhere, even with portrayals of biblical figures, many prophets and apostles must have carried moderately trimmed hear and beards. Jew's customarily kept beards, but it's something of a shame for them to carry long hair. Paul inferred this. You are sadly propagating further falsehood. You are not a Christian. because if you were, you will understand that their is no partiality before God; he created all-blacks and white-equally 2 Likes |

There's nothing wrong at all with dreads for all I know. The natural dreads are hereditary and symbolize nothing spiritually. Superstition made it scary and religion has come to cap it. The fashion dreads, otherwise known as the social dreads come as you have seen them with nothing spiritually attached. Hair naturally tangles and locks due to movement of wind through the hair. If the owner doesn't comb it, the hair must consequently dread. There's no spirit that tangles hair. My nephew had genetic dreads (his mother had it). At 7months old, we were tired of frequently combing out the dreads and within hours, it would lock back like no one ever combed it. His father returned from work one evening and ran his clipper through the son's hair. The Africans around our neighborhood were stunned we didn't do any ritual or wait for the boy to demand something in exchange for the hair. Some said he'd die before a year, others said he'd lose his sense before 2yrs. They said we should get a "powerful man of God" to cancel that. My brother and his wife didn't even remember to think of that. He's in his mid 20s now and doing great as an engineer in the UK. What you think of something is what it is. Dreadlock, apart from fashion is just another hair type. 4 Likes |

DriggityDre: IMHO , there is some sort of connection between miscegenation and dreadlocks..... its Usually common to people whose bloodlines are an admixture of African & European ancestry, for example, Robert Nesta Marley. He is actually what we call "half caste" ,( born of a Scottish father and black Jamaican mother) in this part of the world. Overtime, the hair of a mulattoes (half-caste) gradually gets to be dreadlocks because their hair is NEVER well combed and well taken care of. Superstition is very strong in the traditional African mindset and worldview... |
