nku5: Did you not read that parliamentary paper? That was a British colonial officer on the ground in Lagos writing report back to Her Majesty. He is describing what he saw and knew. They accepted and called it a port. A private one at that. They first described their knowledge of Badagry port and then said Palma port is different....it belonged to that one man. Yoruba built and owned ports before British expanded with modernity. 2 Likes |

Masterkernel1: Maybe you didnt read my earlier post, that those landmarks were torn down to expand much of road network in Lagos. The Lagos Wharf was removed to expand Marina ring road. Iddo wharf was removed before Eko bridge was built. Ships cannot pass underneath that bridge. The port in Palma was demolished much after Kosoko returned to Lagos and trade with his foreign partners shifted. 2 Likes |

MetaPhysical: It's like saying... Statue of Liberty was pulled down to build a railway or London bridge was demolished to erect Airport. Please we had roads before FG built many in Igbo land, but the truth is that they ones built by FG were superior, same goes to your dream ports. If they were monumental why will FG demolish them? If we didn't have pictures of Ogbomoso and Osogbo with brown roofs today, a lot of you would have been telling us the beauty of your land then... Forgetting that London,Paris, Monaco were built even in the 1500 centuries, yet they're beauty to behold, while yours is a museum. |

MetaPhysical: Why are you trying to spin a very simple report. All the colonial officer said that after Kosoko was driven out of Lagos he retired to Epe and claimed Palma (a coastline area around Lekki) as his own "port"/territory and the British recognised his claim to Palma and allowed him to administer it free from British interference. Unless there is another document you have to back up this report, there is no reference at all to a PORT in the conventional sense. Of course fishing boats and very small vessels could berth there and they still do till this day but Yorubas did not have the know-how, capability or technology to build a port. The report says NOTHING about the nature of the port except that Kosoko claimed that area and named it his port. Palma was a waterside and nothing else. I know that part of Lagos like the back of my hand, if there was an ancient port built by Kosoko it would have been known 2 Likes |

MetaPhysical: Really? So all the slaves they had been buying in exchange for mirrors and whiskey since the 1700s was not trade Read well - https://thecommonwealth.org/our-member-countries/nigeria/history Colonial period In the 15th century, Benin began to trade with the Portuguese, selling slaves and acquiring spices, firearms, the art of writing and the Christian religion. By the 18th century, the British had displaced the Portuguese as leaders of the slave trade. A century later, in 1807, the missionaries’ campaign against slavery had gained support, leading the British parliament to ban the slave trade. The navy began to patrol the coast, arresting slavers and settling captured slaves (most of them Nigerians) in the resettlement colony of Sierra Leone. Several missionaries in Nigeria were themselves freed Nigerian slaves who had converted to Christianity in Sierra Leone. The missionaries introduced quinine to control malaria, a new trade in palm oil also began, and the economies of southern Nigeria became increasingly powerful. Steamboats took this new culture up-river and into the forests 2 Likes |

nku5: There were no Nigerians sold to slave traders across the Atlantic. This article was written by a quack. You dont see any issue with it because you are a quack. There was nothing known as Nigeria prior to 1914. By which time Atlantic slave trade had ended half a century earlier. Stop quacking! 2 Likes |

nku5: You are lying. You dont know where Palma is. You know Lekki but you dont know Palma. Palma has not existed in 100yrs. If you insist I will ask you to name the Baale of Palma and shame you here. Returning to the port issue.....your conjectures does not hold, written records and by eye witnesses in the age when Palma existed is sufficient proof. It is recorded that Palma is a port, it is owned by Kosoko and it was profitable for trade. The port was not owned by Nigeria or British and there is no record of it being developed by Nigeria or British but there is record that its owned by Kosoko....Britain accepted it as his property. So who else owned it? Abi this was another one of Ibo development in Lagos? 2 Likes |

MetaPhysical: No need for awada kerikeri. Just share the sources you have about this "profitable" Palma port. Was it a port like the one the British built at Apapa? Or was it a natural waterfront where kosoko used to tax fishermen and other moderate vessels? Where are the facts and written records? Your report says nothing substantial 2 Likes |

nku5: Youve been all over the place with your conjectures. Nothing else you say has credibility on this topic. You said you are familiar with Palma and know the area. You also said Nigerians were sold to slavery across Atlantic. After making such wild and spurious claims your credibility is destroyed on this topic. You have no clue about Palma but you want to prove yourself an authority by telling us your familiarity is unquestionable. Many things are questionable about your underatanding of the Parliamentary Papers and the isssue under discussion. Was there a port in Palma? Yes there was. Who said so? An eye witness British Consular officer reporting to Parliament. What did he say? Palma port belonged to the exiled King. Did he saybit belong to FG of Nigeria? No. Did he say it belonged to Britain or anyone else? No. Who says it belonged to someone else? Nku5. How did nku5 know it belonged to someone else? Nku5 lived in the area, he is very familiar with Palma. 1 Like |

Re: Who developed Lagos Ports: Myth Busted. by MetaPhysical: 4:35pm On May 20, 2020 |
nku5: There are many ports in the world that do not have harbour. You are a quack for not knowing this. A port does not need to be visited by Queen Elizabeth or one of her boats to be classified as a port. If boats from Ghana visited it and all who saw it and knew what a port is called it a "port".....then it is a port! If you had to be coached on this simple understanding, you are a quack. Look on the document you uploaded it says it had good business and even one of the foreign businessmen set up trade there. It was harbourless but good for trade that even the Colonial government were concerned it would compete and attract business and revenue away from Lagos. They conceeded to Kosoko to return to Lagos so they can stop him from operating that business promising port. We have seen everywhere that it is called port and Kosoko owned it. This is not my word but records from eye witnesses. You even bring a record that supports that it is a port, it is good for business and Kosoko owned it. You are struggling with yourself to change blue water to yellow water. All records you will find on Palma will say it is a port and owned by Kosoko. If the British Parliamentary Papers can attest to that fact, using a eye witness account, what contradiction can an Ibo that doesnt even know what a port look like raise to defeat it? Zero! If you like go to American Smithsonian Library and enquire about Palma port in Lagos. They will shame you just as every document so far has done, including one supplied by you. |
