Petrol Price May Increase As Brent Stabilises Around $35/barrel by ijustdey: 5:04am On May 26, 2020
Okechukwu Nnodim, Abuja

Brent, the oil against which Nigeria’s crude is priced, has hovered around $35 per barrel for about one week, raising concerns of a possible hike in petrol price in Nigeria any time soon.

An analysis of global oil trading rates on Monday showed that Brent crude traded at $35.61 per barrel as of 9.32am Central Standard Time.

Further findings showed that the commodity appreciated by $0.48 when compared to the previous day’s rate, although crude oil in the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries basket maintained a flat rate of $28.43 per barrel on Monday.

However, global oil figures showed that Brent Weighted Average in the past four days was higher than the commodity’s rate on Monday, as the BWA was put at $36.32 per barrel.

This represented a 2.34 per cent rise in price, indicating a positive movement in the commodity’s cost as more countries begin a gradual relaxing of the COVID-19 lockdown across the globe.

Operators in Nigeria’s downstream sector told our correspondent in Abuja that the increase in oil price was good for the country in terms of foreign exchange earnings.

They were, however, quick to state that this would cause an upward movement in petrol price at fillings stations.

The Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency had crashed the pump price of petrol from N145 per litre to N125 per litre on March 19, 2020, as it declared the commencement of a market-based pricing regime.

PPPRA further reduced the price to N123.5 per litre in April 2020 due to the crash of crude oil price, as the commodity had traded below $30 per barrel for several weeks.

“But considering the recent rise in crude oil price, it is highly possible to see an upward movement in the price of petrol soon,” an impeccable source with the products pricing agency stated.

The official, who spoke to our correspondent on condition of anonymity, noted that the agency’s boss had earlier explained that henceforth, the cost of petrol would be determined by the international market price of crude.

“Price will naturally be adjusted to reflect a true picture of market fundamentals at any particular period, high or low,” the PPPRA’s Executive Secretary, Abdulkadir Saidu, had stated while answering questions on the new petrol price regime in Nigeria.

On April 28, 2020, The PUNCH reported Saidu as saying that Nigerians should be ready to pay higher or lower prices for petrol following the liberalisation scheme currently in place.

The PPPRA boss, however, noted that efforts were being made to develop alternative fuels to petrol by deepening the utilisation of Liquefied Petroleum Gas/Compressed Natural Gas as auto gas to help cushion the effect of petrol price increase.

The National President, Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria, Billy Gillis-Harry, said market forces would determine petrol price and this could result in an increase in the petrol cost.

Responding to whether there would be an increase in petrol price going by the upward swing in the cost of Brent, he replied, “Well, the reality is that market forces will determine petrol price.”

The marketers will rush and increase the price, I know. But would be reluctant to reduce the price when the crude oil price crashes. Bunch of greedy cretins

...the impact of the reduction isn't felt in the first place. Well, it's a good news for the economy that crude oil price is stable, this is the right time to diversify.

At a time that oil price was very very low in the international market, Nigerians were still paying expensively for petroleum products, petroleum price was only reduced from N145 to N125 which was still very much overpriced, it shouldn't have been more than N80/L. Why increase it now with just little increase in the International market which isn't still up to what Nigerians have been paying? Why doesn't the govt want to completely hands-off controlling the oil sector? It won't surprise me to hear tomorrow that Nigeria paid $2b monthly to subsidise oil, a product that had low price in the international market for a long period lipsrsealed

No, it isn't overpriced. Infact, we pay the lowest price for fuel in the whole West African subregion....all our neighbours pay at least N300 per liter of fuel...including countries like Niger where fuel costs N350 per liter.

Infact, it is the subsidy that government is paying that keeps fuel prices at N123.5 for now.

And government want's to hands off oil because over the last 15 years we have paid subsides for fuel to the tune of N15 trillion naira. That's money that could have gone for educaiton, health, etc. And because oil prices are too low for us to keep on paying subsides effectively. We need oil as high as $139 per barrel as our breakeven oil price. It has never been that high for some time.

In 2014 Brent crude was sold for $93 and petrol was sold for N87. In 2015 oil fell to $48 or so, and petrol remained the same.

In 2020 oil is selling for $35/barrel and we are buying petrol for N145 with govt paying subsidy and later N125 without subsidy.

2020 is Buhari regime, 2014 was Gej regime.
Case closed.

Watch how the oil marketers begin to hoard products anticipating the increase!

When the oil price dropped, they delayed in reducing prices claiming losses and confusing pricing template. When they hear impending increase, they'll either immediately increase price to profiteer or hoard old stock to sell at higher price

Why is it only Nigeria who has oil and been sold at highest price when compared with other countries of the world that have oil as their major resources?

Cursed country.... Anything that will bring ease/good life to the masses can't be sustained in this failed shiithole country.

Nigeria is programmed to suffer her citizen and make sure large percent of her citizen remain in poverty so they can continue to manipulate them.

APC Thieves

1.The subsidy is still there...and it is the reason why we are not selling fuel as high as N300 and above.(Benin, Niger and Cameroon sell above n300)

2.Selling fuel at N70 means an incease in subsidy cost...which means more trillions of naira that we don't have goes down the hole...which means more loans.

3.It is when the subsidy is not enough to keep prices at N123 that government increases prices...to a point where it can afford to pay the amount of subsidy that would keep that price low.

4.Truthfully...deregulation is the answer...it meanshigh fuel prices in the meantime...as high as N300...but more investment, more profit for NNPC to build new refinereis, and expand and upgrade exsiting stock, and more jobs..and more investors coming in to build new refinereis.(not just Dangote)...and eventually....low fuel prices as low as N60.

5.iIn Venezuela, fuel is sold at N40. As a result, their fuel industry is broke. Completely broke. No money to fix refienreis, no money to improve stock...and now they have to import fuel. Same thing in Nigeria...and it took us decades to get there...in both countries.

Since, we still buy 125 instead of 117.
If they increased it now, it won't take a second before everyone effects it .
