My name is Uche a 100Level supposed medicine and surgery student of a Nigerian University, I used to be very brilliant and that was what instigated me to apply for Medicine and Surgery after acquiring an aggregate score of 270 in both JAMB and POST-UTME Examinations, I was then admitted a years ago into a university.

I am the only child of my parents, they have spent so much on me just to make sure I become a doctor, dad had to sell one of his plots of land to pay for my registration fees, purchase a brand new laptop, a phone and clothes for me and all my needs, Mum who has no job since she was sacked by the state government will always try to send the little that will pass through her, when I think of the way she announced to her friends when I gained admission to study Medicine it brings tears from my eyes.

It will be an injustice on me to be blamed or for me to blame myself, I know the effort I have also made, I have always taken my studies serious, I never missed any lecture, I neither miss assignments nor tests, I sit at the front of the class, I don't keep bad gangs, I have never attended a party, sometimes I do RTDB (Read Till Day Break), what is then my offense? why me?

At the end of my 100 level Second semester my CGP was reading 4.2 without a single carryover, I was very happy because I thought I had scaled through the danger zone.

The unexpected occurred when I logged into the school portal at the end of my Second Semester Examination to check my result, I cleared all the courses with A's and B's but a course was reading Carryover, I nearly fainted when I saw the result, it was a biology course I offered in second semester to me the course was the simplest of all. I did not inform my parents because I din not want to dishearten them.

The school resumed, so I went to my HOD and complained, she took me to the Exam office who searched thoroughly for my script and from what I saw it was obvious I failed, I scored 32% and was asked to change department, my HOD advised that I go to Biological Sciences, my eyes were filled with tears.

How do I tell my parents this, it only mean I have brought shame to them. I have remained in school since then crying from one angle to another I don't know whether to go home to my parents to inform them of the truth or keep telling them lies.

I need your sincere advice.
Uche nothing to waste a single tear on. Talk to an uncle of yours close to your family. You are still smart and intelligent.
Apply for remarking of that script. With a CGPA of 4.2 you are potentially a first class student.
If you must change course, follow your passion. Who medicine help last last? It's not by course bro.

100level with one carryover? I thought it would be a repeat. Which school if i may ask?
As an 100 level medical student in Lautech, u must not have an F in any subject, else u get withdrawn outrightly from the department, nothing like resit. U only resit when u fail just a course in the first MBBS.
My advice to op, please inform ur parents, then port to another department.
U can still write UTME and try over again next year.

Your parents are very matured to understand your plight.
Summon courage and talk to them.
The truth will set you free.

Ask if you can be allowed to repeat 100level otherwise, find a course you love and switch to that course. Tell your parents today and trust me, they might feel pained but you need their support at this time.

I wish you the best.

1. Tell your parents
2. move to another department and continue

or

1. Tell your parents
3. rewrite jamb and apply for a course in the faculty of health sciences (nursing, medlab, physiotherapy, radiography).

NB: I told my parents, switched to FHS and I'm not regretting it.

You don't want your parents to know but here you are online. No discretion no anonymity. What if someone here knows you and relates it to them. Or even them

UNILAG has been throwing students who fail any pre-med 100 level course out since ages. They are usually told to change course to another department, no repeat, no resit.

Young man, I'll advise you to go home now and inform your parents about the turn of events. You want to be a medical doctor, that shows that you have innate courage, that you are intelligent, it's now time to use all the inner assets. There is no shame in failing, the only shame will be if you don't respond confidently, courageously and intelligently. As an only child/son, this becomes even more important that you do the right things- go home, call your parents, humble yourself, bow your head, show remorse, cry if necessary and tell them you failed only one subject and have been told to change course. Your parents will take it up from there. They will understand when they see your hurt. We've been there and we survived.

You need to also know what you want to do now.

Do you still want to study medicine and surgery?
You can write another UTME and reapply to present or another university.

Do you have other interests?
You can change course as advised.
You can study the biological science course, you gain more knowledge which you can then use in your next UTME for medicine and surgery admission or you finish with that course and move on with life.

Above all else, happiness is supreme. Not course of study or career.

I hardly responded to write up like this but I was moved wen I read urs.
You have to be strong. My kid sister had similar issue. She was was dropped from medicine to anatomy. She completed the course and she traveled out for medicine. She came back for her housmanship now. Not, we a not rich, father lost his house just to send her out for the course. Mum Wasa retired teacher.
So my dear, inform your parents first. If medicine is yr dream profession. Sit for jamb again. Don't loose hope.

As heart breaking as your story might sound, you are not the first to be in a situation like this and you won't be the last.

I was in a similar situation about 20 years ago. I contemplated suicide and disappearance due to the shame I was going to face. In my immediate community I was the first to gain admission to study that course and every both in my hometown and neighborhood was already referring to me in the prefesional title.

However, someone I confided in (an uncle) made a comment and told me it could have been worse. What if I had died, that so people have died on their graduation day, some during NYSC, etc. He encouraged me to start all over if I didn't want to change course as suggested by the school authorities.

I had to summon the courage to tell my folks the truth and nothing but the truth.

I started over in a different school (a better school, l I must tell you) after taking jamb again, securing admission on merit. I lost 3 years but in retrospect I am always happy I took the bold step of sitting down with my folks and telling them what happened.

I studied my dream course and graduated over a decade ago with 2.1 from the University of Nigeria.

My advice: go to your parents and tell them what happened no matter how hard it might be and then discuss whatever step you want to take. But if I were you I'd study for and retake jamb and still go for your dream course, preferably in another school....

Give details of what is happening to your mother, make sure your father isn’t at home when you are to relay the information. & be sure you have the print out of your result to backup your claim, don’t just do it verbally. From there, heaven will not fall. The only thing I observe here is that you were not counseled on subjects matter before you left home for school especially in Biology being a medical student, l’m sure you would not have failed it because during counseling you would have been told it’s your core / backbone subject being a medical student. Good luck my brother. That isn’t the end, it’s just the beginning.

You need to inform them. You can create a soft landing but letting them know the true situation by coming to plead with your school. It's not like you're a failure

If it means you going for biology, then do.

Nowadays, you can even earn more than a doctor in Nigeria if you write health articles online. You can earn $25 for a 1,000 word article and you can do 2 a day.

Also, after your biology, you can further in medicine by traveling overseas.

My younger brother traveled to the US to read a course. He later dropped it for nursing. After nursing, he went for medicine and he's now a doctor.

You have to tell your parents. You're a good child and they know it. They were once young too.

Don't tell your parent anything. Or you want to kill them too? Pretend as though you are still in school, collect money for books, get your school fee by yourself; use the money to drink and have all the fun you can, take drugs, just have fun. Never make the mistake of writing another Jamb or reapplying. Who studies biological science? You are far beyond that. In the next three years, go to wherever in Lagos and get a university MBBS certificate. Travel to the north, you will get a job. Pay your tithe. You will be forgiven for those that die in your care. It is their time_ right? The best Sir--+ and don't forget to hide or delete the diary where you said you are studying engineering. May you get the attention that you seek.

You had better tell your parents! Medical schools plenty for the Caribbean, Ukraine schools are still there. Plenty private medical schools in Nigeria. Even states' medical schools are easy to get into in Nigeria.

Shake it off and move on with your life!

@ op, you are not the first neither are you going to be the last. My family friend was also affected some years back , he has graduated from the other course, finished NYSC, currently running his MSc and he is living a happy life.

First go back home, create a happy atmosphere and then break the news to both of them, expect them to cry and wail at you, but they will definitely comfort and support you. Be sure you get all the happiness and joy from home before returning back to school. Remove all medical textbooks or lecture resources that will remind you about the past. Be happy and joyful for your next course.

Since you have the option of changing to another department, Please do so as soon as possible. Forget about the stigma and shame. Pick up your life and start with the new course. If possible change to a course that you are very much convinced you can always pass easily. Don't go for any difficult course again... come back after 3 years to invite us for your graduation. Wishing you success bro wink

I've been in your position before, I hid it from family then I used to hide under the bed in my room so they would think I was in school cos I attended university from home, one day under that bed I advised myself I got out walked straight to my dad's room and told him i was no longer a registered student. I didn't die rather arrangements were made for a fresh start in Ghana and I didn't joke with that one, I'm a graduate today. The more you hide it the more the clock ticks.

A lot of microbiology graduates are on this table....Biology or practical physics usually send them packing.

My advise,
1 If you have genuine passion to study medicine/surgery, re-sit for another jamb.

2. Deep down if u know, u only wanted to study medicine/surgery for your parents, this is time to quit and slide into a course u have passion for.

Learn a skill/skills as well to boost ur degree certificate and u are good for the labour market.

lastly, let ur parents know your predicament because they are footing your bills.

Lol...Your quite funny dude..You arent even happy that you are well and alive you are complaining about medical school like its the express way to heaven.
That you have failed today doesnt mean you cant rise tomorrow so why bother yourself ?
Visit home and tell your folks. Change to a new department and excel there.
Try your luck @ UTME next year again, you might just be lucky this time..
Dont compound your problems, Nigeria is hard enough. Most of us are practising what we didint envisage and we are good for it. So just calm down. Live and enjoy life drop the unnecessary burden that you have placed on your chest.
Last last if God says you become successful in life, no one will remember if you did studied medicine or theatre arts.
Cheers
