You did a DIY on a house that doesn't just have a decking but a water tank slab?

Hi NLanders and Engineers.
Good evening.

This structure was built in December 2019.
I noticed the room is always moisty.
When the room windows and door is shut... The glass sweat from inside.

Now it's the roofing(decking), just this part of the decking.

The room is well ventilated but since no occupant the windows and doors are always shut.

Above the decking is completely tiled and two brand new water tanks are sitting untop.

What could this imply?
Why do you people like complicating your lives by putting water tanks on your decks? For such to work you have to do some quality damp proofing and it goes beyond plastering and tiling. There are spaces between tiles. Forget the cement used in fixing them, water will always find its way. Even the best damp proofing will eventually fail at some points. Take that tank off your roof and build an iron tank stand with angle iron components and then roof your building the traditional way. If you won't then get a very experienced specialist to damp proof your deck. Plastering it is a waste of time.

I am learning something here. Just in case I start my own building in the future. I must be my own supervisor from start to finish. Nice one OP

When you employ people to build your house please have time to visit and inspect their works if not, this how it's gonna end. No matter how busy you are check their quotation. Because some will input 50 bags of cement only to use 32. Also give your house to quality builders not all these baba suliyat construction company. grin grin grin grin

My input though.

Next time build your house with only cement.
Avoid using sand.

Are you educated at all

There's no enough ventilation plus the water tank on top

It is sweating.

It will cool down on your head soon if you dont pack your bags and run out of that house now!

It may be as a result of those water pipes from the tank. I experienced same in my former apartment, turned out there was a leaky pipe.
Thanks very much for your contribution but the tanks are brand new and there are no pipes passing through the decking.
This is caused by excessive heat.

well I think it's water seepage, this occur when the water doesn't have were to discharge to when the GeePee tank is filled. My suggestion will be removing the tanks first, then a good Manson guy to shine the ground with cement to make it smooth this in turn stops water movement downward then get a discharge pipe to channel the water out from there too. Hope this helps. They are many alternative to solve this but what I mention is cheaper and faster.

I think the problem is from the tank surface/Area

get a tank holder n remove the tanks from the main structure, then re-plaster that surface and roof it also

this plan B is gonn b effective
You think the tanks are leaking?

Oh no of cos am not angry.
I came here for responses and I don't mind in what manner it will come.
About the structure, it's about 14sqm and consumed exactly 14bags of cement... I can't remember the ratio exactly but it was a...

1: 3: 3 or 1: 3: 4 or 1: 2: 3 ( I remember I got the ratio on here on NL, accompanied with some good engineering sites)

The wall plastering may have being of poor quality but the under decking plastering was a ratio of 1 bag to 6 or 5 buckets.

Also untop the decking before the water tanks were placed is partially tiled.

Do you think we were still highly economical?
what of the thickness

Remove the tanks and the tiles. Buy Dr FixIt and do the floor screeding again with dr fixit water proof cement . After that that put your tiles and tanks back then you are good to go
Thanks bro...
Do you have a photo of this drfixit and is it available in Nigerian markets?

You obviously didn't see the structure he is talking about that's why you're advertising engineering company heregrin Like say money dey, would he use YouTube DIY guide to build ?

oga this decking is a low grade highly economized decking. even the color of the wall is clear prove that where you are supposed to use 10 bags of cement, u chose to economize with 4 bags.

now you are calling on engineers and pretending like you dont know where the problem is from.

as it stand now, your building can collapse if it rains heavily for 24 hours.

when they say higher qualify builders to build your house - you will say no! baba kassim has been building houses for years - i want him to build this one for me he is cheaper and experienced. here lies the final result - LEAKY DECKING!

pls do us all a favour and go rent a decent and safe house for your family while your live in that your house by yourself alone so that if anything happens you will be the only one in the house.

yea i know i sound hash - u r free to get angry.

Unless you used brown sandy soil for the plastering, the picture far more than 6 buckets of sand per bag

6inches is standard but not the cause of that another thing might be the height of the DPC. You have to try and complete the house to get Remedy
Re: What Is Happening To My Decking? by saintftm(m): 8:36am On Jun 19, 2020
That structure is weak. Their is no beam carrying your deck. The weight of the full tanks alone is a threat to the deck. Build stanctions and relocate the tanks.
Re: What Is Happening To My Decking? by FredLum: 8:37am On Jun 19, 2020
Remove the tanks, get a good tiler to fix tiles on it and make it slope properly, lastly get an outlet for the water to the ground.

Had this same issue with my store that have tanks on it, I did the above and its fine now.

Can't a house be built with just cement and rod with gravel with NO SAND.

I am not a civil engineer ooo

I ask due to curiosity.

House can be built with gravel and rod.

But you can’t build a house with cement alone.

Same experience I had with my former accommodation. Furnitures accumulate water over time and becomes mold, electronics are not spare too, it affects photographs and clothes over time. When cooking in the kitchen, the tiled wall would start dripping water.

Op. I am not sure you engage an engineer.this is a building that will last for 40-50yrs. Is the slab designed by structural engineer to carry the weight of the water tank? I can't see any beam under the slab which is wrong. don't let a mason who picked his experience on the road dictate technical things to you, seek the advice of qualified engineer .
The below list are What might have caused the dampness
1. The slope of the floor is not enough , this will cause water retention at the centre of the slab. Water will surely find it way through any concrete slab if the slope to the discharge pipe is not adequate.
2. The engineer should have advised you to lay polythene (water proof) which will cover the area of the slab before tiling the floor.
3. The engineer should have advised you to use water repellant chemical or cement mixed with ordinary Portland cement for wall plastering and floor tiles.
4. You can also cover the slab area with bituminous felt if you can bear the cost.
5. When you have done the 1-3 above ,pour enough water and put your discharge pipe to where the water gather at the wall.

And for the remaining part you don't have water tank make sure you cover it with roof, water will still find it way in the future.

Take care of what I listed above and thank me later.
The beams are internal.

It's ok fam.
We are also looking at the possibility of excess heat because like I said before, the room is damped looking and the window glass sweat from the inside.

That's the building with two tankers untop... The water in this home is continually hot on a sunny day (the radiation and heat from the roof next to it keeps the water hot all day long, we are suspecting this to be the cause of the excess humidity level in the decked room.

What do you think?
Oga, God will bless you, go and roof your building. That structure looks like my former accommodation. I had a very bad experience.

Is the slab designed for the load it's carrying? I guess a bricklayer gave you the slab design and BOQ

Yes there are about 5 slabs (beams) running through the area where the tanks are and another central beam. All internal....

My engineer actually drew and supervised this structure along with myself
