yinkus6750:Did u know HiTv mistake? They collected a dstv right that was meant for the whole Africa, and showcased to the Nigerian market alone.. Las Las dem enter gbese.. HiTv owner was greedy n didnt do a proper work before they commenced.he assumed Nigeria was dstv's highest selling country.. How can u showcase something meant for about 54 countries to only 1 country.. Toyin Subair needed to first build a strong base in West Africa first.. Before even thinking of taking the rights to the EPL back then |

Baawahala:Spoken like a total ignoramus. Stop being mentally lazy. Corruption has nothing to do with the pricing of a luxurious item. How many times have you protested against the price of an iPhone If you are looking for why your country is poor, that is it above. A total lack of responsibility. Always blaming the government, our leaders, foreigners, neighbors, or even village people. No one wants to take responsibility for their lives outcome. The economy isn't run on sentiment but sensible logic. If multichoice offers a channel that I like, nobody can tell me not to subscribe out of sentiments. You have only one option, expel multichoice but I suspect the dumb politicians don't really have the gut to do it. Crying, wailing, and throwing tantrums are useless. No one goes into business to lose money. 1 Like |

omo, which kain socialist nonsense be this? DStv is a privately-owned, nonessential business outfit - nobody dey force you to use am if you can't afford it. one problem with us Nigerians is that we do not understand the workings of politics and economics, and that's why it's easy for the government to initiate asinine projects like this disguised as people-friendly BS. Nigerians complain that they want the price of DStv to reflect their average personal income but they forget outrageous cost of doing business in Nigeria and many even have no idea that DStv buys the rights to air many of their content for millions of dollars. how do you expect a private company that paid for something to sell or sub-rent to its rivals "for competition"? na so competition dey work? ask the Nigerian out there if they'd love their private businesses to be regulated as closely as they want DStv to be regulated and they'll tell you "no" because as an utter truth, BUSINESS IS DONE IN NIGERIA IN SPITE OF ALL THE DIFFICULTIES IN THE COUNTRY AND NOT BECAUSE OF ITS PLEASANT BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT WHICH IS NONEXISTENT. but Nigerians, on some basic level, are entitled people and you see that weird sense of entitlement playing out in this DStv saga and other "eat the rich" calls. instead make we call on government to help businesses thrive and all that, we wan dey kill businesses like this is communist Eastern Europe in the 50s. tueh, we no sabi anything for this country. PS. check for the price of DStv in Ghana and SA and compare with ours; make you see say our own cheap. SA even has significantly more subscribers to DStv than Nigeria so best believe they're not going to be running at too much of a loss if they're stifled and forced to leave. MAKE UNA USE UNA HEAD AND STOP REGURGITATING UNENLIGHTENED OPINIONS. 2 Likes 1 Share |

The Government they are Bounch of liers they know what they are doing. Multichoice have given all of them free subscription and also given some of them at NBC bribe because of this in this Country we can never get PAY AS YOU GO. Go to Kenya and some other country it is PAY AS YOU GO and their Government didn't allow multichoice or other cable network to monopolise their brocasting coperation. Have been saying it for many years that this Country call Nigeria is never a Country am very sorry to have said this. |

jornwhite:. Once again, people watch Africa magic. Infact, there is a fan base for the channel within and outside Nigeria. Not everyone is like you who loves football only. DSTV is making money from Africa magic, which is why we have Yoruba, Hausa and Igbo channels plus extra 1 and 2. Plus, Nollywood makes money too. when its come to large scale businesses forget cost .. its all about securing investors.. any money wey get amount can be disgraced ... govt body language toward indigenous firms get as e be ... with the right support even mitv can air premier league nigeria don't just support there own tinz, My friend, you want government to pay EPL millions of dollars we don't have so that less than 2 million Nigerians can watch Premier league. No government does that in the world, not developed, not developing. EPL rights are expensive. It is like you think that they are cheap. It isn't. They are very expensive. So exepnsive, that BBC in the UK until very recently was not able to pay for rights to air Premier League matches, despite being the equivalent of the NTA in Nigeria. And BBC earns far more than NTA can ever dream of., yet until recently, they could not afford premier league rights, and even now they are allowed to only show 2 games per week. If you cannot afford EPL.....choose startimes. Or free TV. DSTV is not a neccesity in your life. In the years to come, you won't regret it. |

poltergeist: Don't mind Nigerians. Socialists except when it is their pocket. DStv is a privately-owned, nonessential business outfit - nobody dey force you to use am if you can't afford it. Word! one problem with us Nigerians is that we do not understand the workings of politics and economics, and that's why it's easy for the government to initiate asinine projects like this disguised as people-friendly BS.Indeed! Nigerians complain that they want the price of DStv to reflect their average personal income but they forget outrageous cost of doing business in Nigeria and many even have no idea that DStv buys the rights to air many of their content for millions of dollars. That's the point. Fact!. but Nigerians, on some basic level, are entitled people and you see that weird sense of entitlement playing out in this DStv saga and other "eat the rich" calls. Ah, communisim worked...till they ran out of money. tueh, we no sabi anything for this country. 1.I have posted the prices upthread. Others have done so. And some people don't believe. Someone was even saying 'na lie!' Ok. 2.DSTV is even very nice to us self. Upon all the hardship they face. Meanwhile, broke Zimbabwe pays more than we do. |

ben1daEbiri: Slynation: I wish you guys were telling the truth. The thing is, back in 2006, when HiTV took the EPL rights away from DSTV and left them with 2 games per weekend, DSTV subscriber base not only did not drop, it still kept on rising. That's because, contrary to popular opinion, people in Nigeria get DSTV not just for football. 1.Mothers and young women watch Telemundo, ZeeTV, africa magic, TLC, E tv, Food channel, BBC lifestyle, etc. 2.Children and some teenagers watch at least 6-7 children's channels . (The grandson of one of my mum's friends once got into argument with his grandfather after the latter restricted his watching his favuourite children's channel. Lol. The boy even get mouth report him grandpapa!) 3.Even men watch other sports apart from football. Tennis, boxing, athletics, etc. 4.Then there is the religion channel. DSTV has 7-8 christian channels. And 2 muslim channels. 5.And that's not talking about the music channels....up to 7 of them, for young guys and girls. Even if Premier league goes, DSTV has plenty other content. Switch to startimes. Startimes carries FA cup, Europa, French league and Bundesliga. DSTV still carries LaLiga and Italian league sans EPL. |

solomonsly11: 1.Kenya has a packages system like Nigeria. For comparison they pay N22,500 for premium package (in their currency of course).Nigeria pays N16,200 for the same package. 2.Pay as you go is actually more expensive than the packages system. That's why no cable tv provider offers pay as you go. |

Gerrard59:U are the one showing lack of common sense here. This is our country. Enough of exploitation from PHCN, MTN or whoever. I MTN also gave up a fight when people clamoured for pay as u go back then, before they eventually backed down. Why must u walk over those that are already down. We should pay for only what we get Shikena |
Re: FG Moves To End DSTV's Monopoly, Says Multichoice Is Cheating Nigerians by Nobody: 6:22pm On Jul 05, 2020 |
goaldynboy: 1.Startimes exists. DSTV does not have a monopoly. Get Startimes. One member of my church did, and saved so much money. 2.HiTV and TSTV were the cause of their problems. HiTV had no good content apart from EPL and Champions league, and as a result could not grow their content, and thus could not keep on paying for EPL rights because they hadn't the money (and they were not servicing the loan they took to pay for the rights in the first instance). 3.Startimes is alive because they did not bite off more than they could chew. They even took FA cup, Europa and Bundesliga away from DSTV self. |

9gerian:More sentiments. Is it illegal to repatriate profit? If yes, sue the companies. No one cares about how you feel. Make strong laws that bars company from engaging in "capital flight" if you don't want them to. Don't come out after the fact to complain. We won't even be talking about "capital flights" if the government was stable and run by people with working brains. No one withdraws capital from a stable economy. The investors are not stupid, they know what happens when the government changes hands and how sentiments drive policy reversals. When they sense a problem, they run which is normal reaction expected of a prudent person. In other words, you and those who believe in using government power to extort foreign companies and even some local ones are directly destroying our economy while feeling good about it as long as you get your short-term gain. I agree. It is utter selfishness that will make some citizens want to destroy a company because they want to be entertained. The proper way to punish a company is to use other providers, not arm-twisting. Provide specific examples of how allowing foreign companies business freedom actually sabotage the economy. I definitely don't want my business to be singled out with price-fixing rules by foreign countries. What revelation did you provide above? I expect a high schooler to already understand those weak arguments and their variants above. A smarter one would even know that most of them are non-sequitur. Anyone who have actually managed an international business should already know that governmental price control actually sabotages the economy in the long run. Unless of course, they don't believe in free market for others while you enjoyed it yourselves. Can you list some progressive countries(not some backward third world) where government force price reduction on cable subscription or blackmail companies into reducing the prices of their luxury services? Price-fixing is generally bad but it is even more worrisome when the government is trying to satisfy some minority so they can enjoy a luxury good. A patriotic person wants what is best for their country and not their own pocket. Just because a policy will benefit me doesn't mean I have to support it. Are you really entitled to a cheap or free cable TV subscription? Can I assume your grudge against SA is why you want DSTV dealt with? If it was owned by an American for example, would you have been okay with their prices? You are deviating from the topic. This isn't about SA attacks but the myopic government blackmail on a service provider. Again, this is irrelevant. Your beloved mob activists actually looted Nigerian businesses sending many innocent people into debt. They attacked Nigerians going about their business and destroy valuable properties while "fighting" against the supposed attack. The Nigerian government took action because they know the mob were not actually after SA business, they are unpredictable thugs capable of widespread violence. Moreover, it is a bad image to be seen as a jungle where businesses are destroyed on whims. Moreover, I have never met Multichoice is not a monopoly any more than Tesla electric car is. You are free to try other options or even free to air satellite channels
That is the basic principle of demand and supply Prices can be adjusted to cover costs and profit if economic conditions changes. Many electronic products have increased in price(Naira) ranging from 30 to 80% since the Coronavirus outbreak. Yet, I am yet to see anyone protest the "cheating". Also, businesses don't arbitrarily set prices, there are calculations behind them. I don't care about a company's nationality. Never compare discos with other private companies as they are not operating in a free market. Discos receive billions of Naira subsidy every year from the FG just so you and others can line your pocket and feel good about politicians. We are literarily eating our children's future in the form of cheap electricity. But anyone who suggests it is automatically seen as an enemy. A true patriot wants what is best for the nation and not just for their pocket. I will repeat it here again, the spineless government should allow discos to set whatever price that will allow them to profit and invest more in the industry. One thing is clear, they cannot charge higher than it cost to power diesel engines. At the end of the day, the electric industry will progress and we will all be better for it. No nation ever progress without tough decisions and sacrifices. You didn't really have a solid argument for price-fixing other than it makes you feel good. If you do, you would be a strong contender for a Nobel price in economics and will become an instant socialist hero. No one is in danger by not using DSTV, so "protecting" the public isn't really a point. It is a common saying that the role to hell is paved with "good intentions". If someone can't afford DSTV, they should use the alternative. Price-control(with or without subsidy) usually leads to stagnation or destroys a whole industry, this has been an established fact for centuries. 2 Likes |
