One of my parents tenants from Ebony state hit a goldmine selling simple pharmaceutical drugs in my very remote village which is about 65km from Ekwulobia. The guy drives high end vehicles and has bought and is still buying lands and properties from families willing to sell to him.
His annual rent is just N50,000 for modern standard 3-Bedroom apartment.
NB: He came to my village just two years ago and started a small chemist shop.

Rent of 50K?

See flexing.

Mr village champion you called yourself please you need exposure trust me. What a hell are you talking about here? You stopped welcoming them, REALLY? What a personality? Believable what doesn’t work for you made others. You’re the type that’ll be happy when others are not doing well. People who thinks like you jumped liking it. Let me educate you before you endanger yourself drinking happily about Whatever you saw on television. The fight is against poverty not with each other.

Barrytone:
Just watched an interview on CNN where a bar tender is complaining about 600 dollars given as unemployment benefits and that it's not enough. I did the exchange and I know you know better, a Nigerian bar tender doesn't get that but anyone getting over 200k naira in Nigeria should be among the average citizen and has no right to complain but build from there. I think even with 1k dollar life is still miserable over there but with 400k here, you are the boss. Before you leave your banking and other paying jobs to go attempt the hustle in the west just know it's either crime or luck I your portion. I don't work on luck.
Growing up, folks from Lagos will visit the village during Christmas with good clothing and few cash to burn the Christmas away. We the village boys will be thinking Lagos is eldorado. We quarreled with our parents to allow us travel to Lagos. After my waec, I traveled even against parents advise, got to Lagos and discovered those Lagos big boys were struggling extremely to feed, feeding that is free in the village, u can eat as long as I have stomach to store it. I immediately returned to the village and began seeing them just the way they are, no longer bother going to welcome them when they visit. I completed my school and they came again that all the job in this world is in Lagos and Abuja. I told myself if I can't make it in my village then no where else. I became a village champion. I stayed for about 6yrs waiting for the right job. While hustling the village hustle. In all, got myself a house while in the village but my Lagos and Abuja folks never got one. Luck met me in the village as my dreamed job came knocking and the rest is history. Today the Lagos and Abuja front are asking me for soft landing job so they relocate to that same village. Look around you, so much "dollars" in the streets of Nigeria just "bend down and pick" the right way. My family can leave, it's their choice to make but me, I go nowhere except for just a visit.

Mr cosmopolitan, u wouldn't understand but I will try to educate you how we welcome people in the village, when a returnee arrives, we leave our activities and home to go to their house to hang around, drink and gist. That I stopped doing because I knew it wasn't necessary, I had to proof that we were equally busy in the village and making money. Unfortunately, I don't compare with any humans that's why am quick to always state here that I don't want to be a dangote and the rest. Each man with his cross, never compete or compare, our paths are definitely different. I wish everybody well as I know that if I become the alpha and omega I will bear the cross alone. During the pandemic, I wished to send palliative to my village as what they got from govt was insulting. Just chat with like minds across the globe and money dropped from all quarters, if I was the only one can I achieve that my passion alone? I am still the village champion, at least there is a champion.

Oga, with all due respect you are talking in d nonsense, you are talking d tin that does not have a meaning.

You want people to stay in d village and hussle because you made it there? Rubbish!!

Do u know that Lagos followed by Abuja has the most capital inflow and cash in circulation?

With its monthly allocation, Akwa Ibom is supposed to be a big state on its own, what has your governors done even for the youths there?

Even in d US people move from the country side to d cities of New York, Washington and co.

So you will advice a graduate of mechanical Engineering to stay in let's say in Dallas when he can move to Detroit and make a name and living for himself?

Let me not say more.

Oga boss, I only made a comment and shared a true life story, never asked you to go to village. If I tell you how many people call from Lagos for assistance then you will be shocked. A friend of mine started working on Lagos from nysc days, he got a surgery last year. I was shocked he resorted to alms from his friends, that simply means after working for over ten years he can take care of his medical bills. Continue over hyping, same mistake people make about western countries, we have both very comfortable and very wretched people. Lagos can't be 200m people's solution.

Why this Lagos vs Village matter de pain people like this?

Do what please you and works for you but never loose sight of the other perspective and options. If city works for you stay there, but if all you are doing in the city is saving for landlord, maybe it is time to do a critical review of your life to see if there are other options you are overlooking, no need to feel insecure if your beliefs are challenged.

Disagree respectfully.

The crux of what he said earlier was that he found his niche in his village. Instead of competing in the big city, he chose to be where he saw opportunity and competition was less stiff. It may not be applicable to everyone but that's his own story.

The moral is that you should open your eyes to opportunities around you with less competition. This strategy was highlighted in a book called The Millionaire Mind by Thomas Stanley

Lagos is d solution for now till our leaders start doing things right.

Like I said, Akwa Ibom has the resources, on a normal day anyone from there shouldn't be struggling but what about the youths from Afikpo? From Langtang? From Orlu? From Sagamu? From Kazuare? From Bama? From Shagari?

Do they continue to stay in their hometowns when they have been abandoned to their fate? Or is it the 1,000 job per local government of 20k for 3 months that will save them?

Someone talked about mining, if not that people like Saro Wiwa fought and died even the indigenes of these oil producing states would have been beggars in their own land. You didn't read that government owns every mineral resources and that you are no close to competiting with the Chinese who will bribe Govt officials and pay employees peanuts.

Lagos, not even Ph or Abuja is d only place you are guaranteed to little bit of fair play as a Nigerian who doesn't know anyone.

@Bolded, that is the point Barry is making. Those guys have been able to discover an opportunity that works for them in the village rather than in the city.
Retires do not have the strength non de experience to farm so it is still youths who should take over farming and improve over what our fore fathers did.
The painful truth is that some persons are better off in their towns than been swallowed up in the city where they live a life that is less than that for humans just to be said to be in the city especially when that city is Lagos.

Oga abeg retrieve that your statement that lagos is the solution for now. That is the false idea sold out in past that has resulted to over-population and mad traffic jam in this small land of Lagos.

Back to the matter on ground, both side of the divide are correct, there is never a clear cut pattern to success. Approach of Mr A *might* not work for Mr B, hence everyone should identify there path to success.

My girl was trying to download a source file yesterday and it was about 1.4GB. She didn't even ask me before she started doing it and it made me reflect on some economics.

Years back, 200MB was about N1000, today 1k (which is weaker) can get you 1.5GB on MTN. (I'm on HyNetflex 800GB at 90k for 6 months, which means I'm even paying like N112.5 for 1GB)

The citizens are generally poorer, but MTN is now richer selling at reduced prices (with more competition). Most things have remained worse in terms of infrastructure and economy.
I can't tell if you are criticizing MTN for being richer since it is a normal expectation that successful companies will be rich.

MTN is not very good for us, because they still ship their profits back to SA. But this illustration shows an economic advantage that building has.
[q/uote]
Can you explain further?
Is our Telecom industry better off with MTN?
The answer to the above is all that matters.

I wouldn't want a foreign country to bar my business from moving legitimately earned profit to a different destination.
One of the hallmarks of an economically free nation is the n.
Moreover, we tend to avoid the real reason why many foreign investors flee with their money.
Despite the freedom of America's markets, foreign investors prefer to reinvest than withdraw their capitals.
This is because they know that a change in government is less likely to destroy their wealth as opposed to
Nigeria where a new government's rhetorics and spontaneous populist actions can put capitals at risk.

[quote]
Imagine if we had a functional cotton factory in Kano and a Zara production house in Aba. Zara will even be shipping some things from Nigeria. I've bought several clothings from Zara U.S that were made in Morocco.
We don't really need an "X" company unless it can compete on its own without government subsidy.

As of today, there is no evidence that a cotton factory in Kano will actually be profitable.
This will change when private investors can set up factories and make a profit.
The lack of investment drive is also not helped by the fact that the government keep creating
easy money avenue for high-income earners who will prefer the safety of government-affiliated
enterprise to the risky but more profitable private enterprise.

This is a very clear example on how increasing our productive capacity will be better for the country at large. When it comes to data, N1000 today can get you 10 times what it got you several years ago. It doesn't matter if the N1000 has devalued, depreciated or whatever, you can simply get more value for it now.
You are right.

Imagine this is replicated for food, clothing e.t.c We won't have this much craze about USD because you will obviously have a lot more disposable income, and can afford 10 times more than you used to.
Not quite.
The problem with the economy is that it can't be dictated at least not for the long-term.
The attempt to control a particular sector often produce

The transformation of the telecom industry happened because the government largely
allowed free-market competition. If we are to make headway in other sectors, the government
must be committed to allowing the markets to dictate its own direction with strong protective legislation.

I got into a debate with a self-described veteran businessman the other day who berates the government
for not fixing the price of DSTV subscriptions. All attempts to explain that price-fixing is bad for the industry
fell on deaf ears. I suppose a politician who campaigns on halving subscription price will get many votes.

Imagine if the government has been spending billions to prop up Nitel/M-tel which ordinarily can't compete.
We will be far behind today and still be struggling with basic telecom service.

Also, we tend to see the demand for USD as a huge problem when it isn't.
If our exchange rate is liberalized, a market-determined rate will make
many local productions more feasible in the long-run as higher prices of
imported goods will help offset the high local production costs.

As it now, the CBN is indirectly encouraging imports by lowering the
cost of import via artificial exchange rates. Yet, we complain about
unemployment.

1 USD could exchange for #1000 and we can still have a functional and growing
economy with decreasing unemployment. Though we have to sacrifice a lot in
the short term.
