I agree...

Its 5 year average dividend yield from 2014 till 2019...
Its just a reflection of consistently high paying dividend stocks...

DrAwo:

Stocks with the highest dividend yield over a 5 year period...

To get dividend yield @ this moment
It’s DPS/MPS

So zenith bank dividend as at last year div 2.8, Share price is 16.5 @ now

2.8/16.5 = 16.9%
E.g N500,000 * 0.169 * 0.9(After tax)= 76,050

So in this scenario, your compare the yield with commercial papers, treasury bill rate, time deposit and inflation rate and you see you get more value for your money yearly, however the share price might plummet and yield falls

So the denominator plays a crucial part, if the shares goes lower, you get the shares at a cheaper price

Hi guys, never knew there was a thread like this on Nairaland.

I have a question. If I wanted to buy a foreign stock like Facebook for long time investment, how do I go about it?

The reason I asked is, definitely all these little apps that serves as a means to buy stocks is likely not going still be available in the next 15, 20 years.

One other question. Where do I start reading this thread from as a complete beginner?

Sorry for my layman language.

Since you already missed their year-lows, I think they're still good at current prices. However, you may wait and see how the market will respond to their Q2 financial reports then you decide afterwards.

Kindly note that no one can accurately time the market and my suggestion has nothing to do with market-timing. It's just that we're already in the earnings season which might(or might not) create entry opportunities due to the ongoing situation.

If you are a beginner, you should start from home. Learn how to invest in the NSE before talking of foreign stocks.

Read this thread from the beginning before you get to the first fifty pages you will understand the rudiments, get a clear objective of why you want to invest, define your risk tolerance level, read some articles about stocks and investment on nairametics and similar websites, ask questions.

If you are completely new to investment arena, I will advice you start from low risk investment windows like mutual funds, don't be in a hurry because some of the things you have heard or read or will read about stocks or investment generally is better experienced than thought or observed. All the best

What I was trying to say is how is your investment protected in case the broker (online) goes bankrupt or bust. I'm interested in long term investment in foreign markets, hence I need to know I will be protected in some way, 10 years plus is along way to go and anything might have happened by then.

You know, it's not as if there's any legal physical paper to sign on. What everyone uses here are just apps (online brokers,) which doesn't have any proof it'll stand the test of time. I think I'm clearer now.

For curiosity sake, I'll follow your advice, sweet money may be in my country (short term) than looking outside. Lol
Thanks.

You are unto something with those apps. Same worry I have.

I will advise you start with Nigeria stockbrokers, who will get you a CHN and CSCS.

ETI TARGETING NGN 6.0 IN COUPLE OF WEEKS
With the stock price creating a Higher-Low, ETI shares could likely be on the way to 6.00 or above in a couple of weeks. And looking at the banking sector showing strength (as explained in my last YouTube video), ETI most likely will follow the rest on the rally trip... 4.50 - 4.60 is my BUY ENTRY advise

If a stock broker goes bust

Your details are still gonna be in the register of the company, as kept by the registrars

I get your suspicion as a Nigerian, as coming from the environment we do, you always suspect and doubt everything

But you dont have so much to worry about

Good morning fam,

I'll appreciate some guidance. I've looked closely at UCAP in the past week. Their number check out fine... looks a good investment..
What I'm not clear about however.... is the long term sustainability of what they do. I dont have a finance background so I struggle with clarity as to 'sustainability' with investment banking in the long term....This is important for me cos I buy long term....

I understand commercial banks .. and how they make money, I also know that some of them have investment banking arms which contributes to their revenue and bottom line. But long term sustainability of an investment bank standing on its own vis - a - vis competition is what I'm trying to understand.

Thanks in advance to the guru's in the house for clarifying this for me.

A point of correction: Stocks are not kept with the registrars.

Any stock bought on Nigerian Stock Exchange are warehoused in Central Security Clearing Systems (CSCS). So if any broker goes bust, your stock is still with a custodian (CSCS). But if you have cash balance with your broker and it goes bust, I don't know where that will be o grin grin

Like you said, he doesn't have much to worry about if he is invested in NSE.

What I meant

Was that in the books of the registrar

The name of every shareholder will still be in it as at a particular date...

And as for cash balance with the broker

Buying from app is different from buying through a registered broker.
I don't anyone can answer what will happen to those shares if those apps go burst.

I had the same exact question in addition to AFRIPUD. Maybe some experienced members can assist on this.
The management of AFRIPUD& UCAP& UBA all seem to be from the same background as Heirs Holdings and seem to share the same messaging for investors.
Their websites are even all identical in appearance and presentations (even though I don't believe it means anything in determining how profitable a business is?)
I don't have much historical background information and was wondering was there a time AFRIPUD & UCAP were subsidiary or offshoots of UBA?
