What the workers will be paid will be determined by the nature, location, size and profitability of the business. A buka owner at Oshodi making daily turnover of 20k and 3 workers can only pay the minimum wage 1 Like |

topsquino: The poor are in majority and can't affordable the right fees and charges. Come to the typical ghetto in Lagos and see businesses that the total capital used for such business is not up to 100k and these are businesses taking care of a family. The right business model will not be affordable to over 90% of the population Just thank God for your life. Some years ago when Airtel sacked Nigerian engineers and employed Indian engineers. Do you know that it cost the company lesser expenses and the efficiency increased. Prior to this the Nigerian engineers were canvassing for an increase in their remuneration. It is honourable not to accept a job that can't take care of your expenses, rather than accepting the job and then defraud the company. 7 Likes 2 Shares |

DexterousOne: Lol. Let's not get into a "race" issue here. In this case, I was not referring to any hierarchy of humans. When I used the term "real" I was referring to the fact that in my experience, Europeans and North Americans operating enterprises in Africa generally tend to be way less openly derogatory in their dealings with Africans than the Asians tend to be. They also generally operate to higher standards - you don't hear of them locking up employees or flogging them or doing all the nonsense that the Chinese for instance, like to indulge in. For instance, I will never fly Turkish Airlines or Air Maroc, etc. no matter how cheap the flights are. Whenever I go to Europe, I travel with the European airlines, because while racism is present everywhere, the Europeans show it way less, are more interested in collecting your money and providing service in return, and they provide better treatment than the Turks, Arabs and Indians do. As long as you treat me well, I don't care about what's in your heart. 2 Likes |

Let us consider the case of a graduate who started teaching on part time basis as a student in order to finance his University education. After graduation he started a small primary with less than 20 pupils, using the space in his church. Five years after the school grew to 150 pupils, a moved to a bigger location by renting a block of 4 flats. Because of the location of his business the average school fees is N25,000 per term. That is a total of about N4 million per term and N12 million per annum. Which is not much. Making provision of about 7.5% for discount and bad debts His annual revenue will be just N11 million. Expenses. Rent for 4 flats = N2 million Salary= N5 million (18 workers) Taxes, levies, dues= 500k NEPA/utility/generator/fuel/security/ = N1 million. Maintenance/depreciation= 500k Total expenses= N9 million. Assuming he got a loan for the establishment of this business, his expenses will be higher. This is the problem with most small businesses in Nigeria, which some of us who are lucky to work in big corporations and businesses do not appreciate. 18 Likes 3 Shares |

ahiboilandgas: Some say national incomes correlates with iq. ( Most westerners believe this) eg African low iq savages who can't build a civilisation. Others say it's related to corruption. ( Economists believe this) developmental funds stolen, which leads to further degradation. Some others believe it's due to Bretton wood's, the Roman Catholic enslavement( western domination- first mover advantage) , Jewish capitalist cabals running the world, fiat currency manipulations (removal of the gold standard) by the feds. I think it's the latter, but the first is now true, because environment breeds low quality humans, which causes lack of development and growth, which leads to further poverty and corruption. Until Africans focus on how to improve productivity without waiting on the government or go on a full political revolution to change leadership, nothing will change. 2 Likes |

XiaoLi: The government cannot get it right if the citizens don’t sir. If you understand psychology well, you would see there is what is called “consensus”. The painful thing is Nigerians don’t understand general consensus. A country deserve the leaders it gets especially in the long term. How many leaders do we have total? 100K? 200K? I put it to you that if majority of the leaders are bad and majority of the people are good, the country will be far better than what it is today. And even if “all” the leaders are good and majority of the people are bad, you would be wasting your time. Just look at racism in America back in the days, Texas and co, there were rules against racism but the white citizens continued it. They are enjoying what they are enjoying today because of a majority consensus to do what is right. Same thing with the George Floyd incident, at first the mayor and chief of police wanted to do anyhow, see what a majority consensus did to them. Because many Nigerians are benefiting from the corruption of our government, many are not interested in doing anything for the country. Just look at fraudsters, is it not the same government they complain about that is bad that makes lax laws that make them do their fraud with impunity? What about Contracts? This is the worst, but we have been blaming government for years, but what has the majority consensus done? 11 Likes |

XiaoLi: Have you been in a position of power before? Do you think it’s issues like this that will come to your desk? The purpose of a leader is not to be perfect but to try and serve for the good of the Majority. Where would the lines be drawn in government imposing on businesses? Or people solving a problem? |

topsquino: I initially wanted to ignore your comment but I changed my mind. Well, I won't pen down much but just a few questions; 1. Why do you think relying on God for a good employee is the cause for our retrogression in this part of the world? 2. Did you to read my initial post CAREFULLY before making this hasty conclusion? For employers, I spoke about EMPATHY (this covers a whole lot but it is missing in the work environment) and for employees, I spoke about VALUES. A lot has been said about the value system. Once more I say to you, with God ALL things are possible. 7 Likes |

ahiboilandgas: I run a business, mind you And I know how difficult it is to start a business in Nigeria. You will agree with me that most times, workers that earn decent salaries perform well than those who earn peanuts. I don't know why you create your own business. Apart from making profit, part of my reasons is improving the welfare of my workers and reducing poverty. I will rather shut down my business if I'm making profit but my workers' welfare is in jeopardy. In my world, employees' welfare is more important than profitability. I believe if my employees are happy my customers will be happy. NOTE. I'm not talking about theory here. I've applied this principle in my line of business and it has always worked for me. Even when I was helping my mum to sell textiles in idumota a few years ago, I applied this same principle and it worked. An average employee in Nigeria believes employers are wicked, callous and insensitive to their welfare. If many employers can improve the welfare of their workers in Nigeria, I'm sure the rate of dishonest workers will reduce and employers will reduce their cost of rehiring new workers. May be you should try this and see the results. It may not work all the time, but it works most of the times. 8 Likes |

Re: Treasury Bills In Nigeria by topsquino(m): 10:06am On Jul 14, 2020 |
ahiboilandgas: It's not charity. You can make good profits if you take your worker's welfare seriously. I've many friends who run their business without putting their employees in mind. They end up complaining workers are this or that. I've seen many law/IT firms that make a lot of money in this country. Yet they will pay their junior staff, who just finished law school, below 50k. In the end, their staff will steal their clients and start their own law firm and the cycle continues. We can't build wealth like this, if we continue to pay workers an amount that cannot even take care of their basic needs. 15 Likes 3 Shares |
