I went to a shop to buy some provision, i tried to pay the seller with my left hand because my right hand was occupied with my tool box, she insisted i must give her the money with my right hand which i have no problem with, but i really want to know the reason so i thought bringing it up here will go a long way hearing different people's opinions.

People see it as a bad manner, but to me, it means nothing. I believe one cannot wash right hand effectively without the left hand. So why the condemnation? Is there any religious reference to back it up with?

Achorladey: We all grow to see so many things as bad manner even though we don't have enough reason to do so. It's part of the thought process we absorb while growing.

Achorladey: I am not aware of any scriptures condemning the use of the left hand. If available. It will be interesting to see but I know some did great things with the Left hand.

Then the below 1 Corinthians 12: 18-26 as it concerns Christians because many Christians too are caught in this act of rejecting what is handed out using the left hand and it baffles one that they have come across this scriptures too numerous to count. What they see is the SPIRITUAL APPLICATION but Paul was equally using the physical aspect to DRIVE HOME the point made.

OWO ALAAFIA................is the left hand? OWO ALAAFIA meaning the peaceful hand.

Since the left hand is peaceful, why is it still condemned?

An adage states in Igbo and Yoruba.......Only a foolish child points to his father's house with the left hand.

A child born with the left hand handicapped, can we call such a CHILD FOOLISH when the child can only use his RIGHT hand to point at his father's house?

Will a person still be seen as FOOLISH when unforeseen circumstances made the left hand unfit to point to his father's house?

Says who I know of pastors who use left, my brother and my daughter do everything with their left hands and they are children of God undecided

It's just not culturally accepted for whatever reason and the fact still remains that most people do dirty things with their left hands because they want to keep their right hands clean since they eat with it.

I have nothing against them, what they do have no effect on my body but
the society is being desecrated and children are looking at them and doing the same thing
two young girls(sisters) aged 9 and 15 were busy kissing in my compound and they were saying it is how the world is turning.
their father finally flogged them and said it is his fault, he never disciplined his kids the way his own father did to him
all their father used to do to them is don't do that again or I will punish you
you were once a kid. how do kids think. it is the thing thy say not to do that they always want to do

when I was young, I hated when I was flogged but now I am grown, I understand why

This topic is very funny but very sensitive. I am a lefty and proud of it. Growing up you hear comments from family friends, Neighbours, strangers ( where is your parent especially your mother), (is she alive),(Did she flog you about your left hand). I thank God for my parent and siblings for their love and support never felt different because I am not. Mum over supported me and built myself love.
Let me share an experience that happened few weeks back was attending to customers so had my hands filled up another customer came wanted a form so I just tore up a form for her and wanted to move on the next thing I heard was you no dey look face I looked up and just ignored her someone I am trying to help not to queue up, she kept on talking you are rude, you don't have respect. I just smiled and asked ma what us wrong with my left hand, she responded it is wrong and unafrican. I just told her please ma prove to me and show me written and documented laws and I will stop using my left hand. She called me stubborn and rude and left after picking the form from the table I dropped it on when she saw I was not ready to compromise my stand.

OP thanks for bringing this topic up. it's just the culture and society we found ourselves frown at the left hand. personally I don't see anything wrong in the left hand.

Not only Nigerians. I watched a Korea film where the boss rejected the same act from his junior one. So, don't condem Nigerians alone for this it is universe.

In many parts of Africa, Asia, and the Middle-East, it is considered rude to do a lot of things with your left-hand - in Ghana, even pointing with your left hand is considered rude.

Same way my parents, especially my mom forced me to switch to the right hand while growing up, and deep down, it affected my thinking. I had to learn how to use my right, now I'm ambidextrous.
These days, I do everything with my left hand except eating and writing of course.
I'd never ever force my child to be right-handed. Not only because it is bad but because I'm also a fan of lefties. Southpaw for life

In the UK the number 13 is considered as bad luck, nobody wants to associate with it even in numbering houses. It is their culture and this is ours. You can't claim to be smarter than your ancestors just cos you get small western education. undecided

My Pry 2 teacher forced me to sit in the front of the class and write with my right hand. I felt very bad. Nobody considered the fact that my Dad is left handed and mine is inherited from him.
20 + years later, I don't care. I'll even use my left (blessed) hand to give you money or shake hands with you if I feel like.

Those traditionalist should do well to reject a check that is signed or presented to them by Fashola, Bill Gates, Barrack Obama, Mark Zuckerberg, and others.

Since superstitions grow out of feelings and feelings grow out of mental processes, we can find a reasonable explanation for it. The idea is a testament to the fragile egoism that plagues mankind. The left hand is generally the weaker hand in most people and often the hand used to wash after toilet. Therefore, a person that has to accept something from someone using his left hand imagines that the other does it out of pride, contempt and absentmindedness, which is also joined with the idea of faeces and excretory organs. This opinion is further strengthened by custom, which inadvertently frowns against it. Nevertheless, most people that abhor it do so because of custom.
