JosBoy4Lif: I weep for Jos too. It's Jos today, tomorrow it could be Bauchi, Makurdi, Benin, Onitsha, or even Illorin. We don't need to cover the deep wound with a small plaster, it needs serious surgery. |

Why can't the 3 native groups of Jos get together and drive the Hausa and Fulani out of Jos completely? The whole state of Plateau should be made a no-go area for them. One day they will start claiming ownership of Asaba. |

The Evidence of History in 1873 the Hausa/Fulani from Bauchi attempted to conquer the natives of Jos but were heavily defeated and chased out of Jos by the combined army of Afizere, Anaguta, Berom and other tribes. The Hausa/Fulani army retreated and never came back to attack natives of Jos. They only came back to Jos after the advent of the British. The evidence for this is from a letter dated 4th January, 1915 from Mr. Lonsdale, District Officer, Bauchi Division to the Resident Naraguta Division. The letter was a response to a request by the Resident for an account from the District Officer of this battle of 1873. In the letter, Mr. Lonsdale narrated to the Resident of Naraguta an account of the battle as told him by Abdu Wazirin Wunti of Bauchi who was himself present during the battle as follows: “We proceeded to Jos---- close to the present site of Niger Company Canteen, we were attacked by a large number of Naragutawa, Bukurawa, Jarawa, Bujiawa and men of Amo. They beat us and we all separated in flight reaching Tilde at night. The pagans turned from Rafin Jaki. The (sic) Bauchi was killed near Naraguta on the Buji road as he was fleeing; forty one (41) of us were killed and twelve of our horses. We captured eighteen of their cattle. After that we did not fight them again”. Sir Ahmadu Bello in his book “My Life” stated on page 11 of that book that: “the countries which did not come under the Fulani rule were the areas known as Borno Province, the Plateau Province (less Wase), the Jukun, the Tiv and Idoma peoples of South of the Benue Province and small part of Kabba and Ilorin Province”. Charles C. Jacobs in his book “Studies in Berom History and Culture”, stated on page 227 of the book as follows: ----“the bulk of the labour force on the minefields came from outside the Plateau Chiefly from other parts of Northern Nigeria. The Hausas and the Kanuris came to constitute the cadre of experienced miners who worked all the year round and supplied the bulk of the headmen”. Bill Freund in his book “Capital Market and Labour in the Nigerian Mines gave an excellent account of the political economy of tin mining and labour on the Plateau tin mines. He stated that in the 1940s due to the Second World War and the increase demand for tin to prosecute the war effort, forced labour (Diban Gwamna) was imposed as a state policy and many Hausas from the North were drawn into the minefields It was the Late Gbong Gwom Jos, Da Rwang Pam, that gave out the land upon which Jos Central Mosque was built, to the Hausa Community for that purpose. On the day the piece of land was handed over to the Hausa/Fulani Community by late Da Rwang Pam, the then Gbong Gwom Jos, the Sardauna of Sokoto and Premier of Northern Nigeria, late Sir Ahmadu Bello who was himself present and was accompanied by Alhaji Ali Kazaure, Alhaji Ali Iliya, Alhaji Sale Hassan, Alhaji Inuwa Ali and other dignitaries made the following remarks: “Today is my day of great joy and happiness. The Gbong Gwom Jos through extraordinary generosity has given Muslims land to build a Mosque for their Community who are his loyal subjects. Today I want us to say that the Beroms and Hausas must work in harmony. The Hausa must respect the authority of the Berom. The day you cheat on the Berom, you will suffer untold hardship because if you cheat on the Berom, you will always end up being cursed. Remember you will never see happiness until you respect the host community”. It would do well for the Hausa-Fulani in Jos to heed the words of Ahmadu Bello to them. |

Though Jos belongs to the Biroms, but at the moment, the Hausa Fulanis that have been there since 120 years are now natives and should be seen as so. Asking the Hausa-Fulani to vacate Jos is like asking Ndigbo in Bonny to vacate Bonny. |

abadaba: Are you a trouble maker or you don't get the point Nobody is asking them to vacate Jos, but when you have poorly educated Hausa/Fulanis like Passila claiming to have lived in Jos for the past 1000 years, and that infact they're indigens of the area, then you understand the issues at hand. It's not about Jang, it's about people who want other peoples land at all cost |

People like Passali are problems to Plateau State. If people like Passali could avoid ignorance, then that will be the beginning of ending the crises. I wish we could have people like late Sir Ahmadu Bello who could put more sense in the minds of his people especially people like Passali. God bless Late Sir Ahmadu Bello, God bless all true Plateau Indigene and God bless all true Nigerians. I wish that all members of House of Assembly would be wise enough to protect the minority tribes and their culture from becoming extinct due to forceful domination by the Majority tribes specifically the Hausas. I de Hale una all the Igbos, Yorubas, Idoma, TIVs etc in Jos . you're all good people. I also hale those small fraction of Hausas that respect the Indigines as true owners of Plateau. I believe that the radical ones like Passali will not let you say the truth because they will chop your hands off or kill you including your families. |

The problem with the jos indigence is that even the last riot them and Hausa Fulani was butchering each other igbos went in their to save their christian brothers i tell you that was the worst mistake. When they realized that ooh igbos have join hands to help them they now back out and leave the fight for igbos alone and the result was again igbos were getting kill by Hausa Fulani in jos, best thing just leave them and their Fulani brothers to finish themselves who cares |

Nigerians Chai!!! We argue on everything even if it is of no benefit. If truly this country is to survive we have to learn to respect people's religion and cultural background. No Nigerian should be forced to leave any part of the country while he has spent the greater part of his/her life in such an environment. As long as a person is creative and productive, such a person should not be denied the right to seek employment as a means of self preservation. This is exactly the same problem that Nigerians have when it comes to the Presidency. Everybody wants someone who he shares a common ideological background to rule him/her. Yes it is human instinct, but in a situation like Nigeria, people who are able and qualified should be allowed and supported to help this country out of the numerous form of "darkness". We need change and a Yoruba, Igbo or Hausa man cannot do it alone, we need to put our heads together. I pray we just learn to live with one another and also have a measurable degree of tolerance. If not, 97years of amalgamation will become a total waste of blood and energy of our falling leaders. God bless Nigeria |

Nigerians dey laugh me.I think we should withdraw all armed forces and let Hausas and Beroms fight until one surrenders the land.Since the Beroms want to remain pre-historic because of tribalism and Hausas have refused to yield hence the only solution is a full war. |

We were used to fight against the ibos, yes we were used to fight against the ibos, now the same people who used us are now applying every method to put us out of existance, and still same people lied and still claimingand lying to us that the 1966 coup d'etat was meant to elliminate the northerners by the ibos utterlly lies this was another cover up.ask people who knew MAJOR KADUNA CHUKWUMA NZEOGWU VERY WELL MANY OF THEM KNOW THAT KADUNA NZEOGWU WAS NEVER A TRIBALIST IF ANY OF THEM CAN BE BRAVE ENOUGH TO SPEAK THE TRUTH.infact the 1966 coup ploters where a group of uncurropt revolusionists who couldnt turn a blind eye to let the curropt politicians in govt to make our hard earned indipendence a joke.the same spirit that lead MAJOR GIDEON OKAH 1990S COUP PLOT,although he MAJOR OKAH did not want his nigeria to have anything to with some notorious norther state, today considering what is happening in nigeria WETHER YOU WANT BELIEVE IT OR NOT MAJOR KADUNA CHUKWUMA NZEOGWU AND MAJOR GIDEON OKAH WERE DAMN RIGHT RESPECTIVELY,AND BEFORE PEOPLE LIKE PASSALI COULD ADVOCATE FOR COMPENSATION FOR HIS PEOPLE,LET HIM BE MAN ENOUGH TO GO BACK TO THE YEARS BEFORE THE CIVIL WAR IN HONESTY AND CALL ON THE FEDERAL GOVT OR THE DAMN COLONIAL MASTERS TO COMPENSATE THE IBOS TOO THATS RIGHT.Today in this country nobody cares about honesty for the fear of embarassment to his/her people of interest WELL YOU LOT WILL CONTINUE TO HEAR OR READ AND BE EMBARASSED. |

I weep for Nigeria. Leaders are no longer people you can trust to reconcile differences, all they do is to put more fuel and make matters worse. Why can't this pasali of a man seek ways to solve the problem rather than saying they must pay the fulanis their cows etc, what about the human lives that perished as a result? How do you compensate for that? The worst part is : he did not do his research well on the Igbos and Yorubas and he is using them as example. Imagine! next time he should do a thorough research please. |

naijaking1: Why ibos quickly tag people as ;poorly educated, illiterate and so on. just because you can say "i dey laugh or how u dey sir" doesn't mean you are educated. Sure the level of illiterate is high in the hausa community but the level of immorality is ostensibly higher in the ibo communities. This Jos problem only demonstrate the lack of leadership this country is enduring. How much long these killings can continue until someone decide to end this nonsense of who is or not indigenous. I mean how stupid it is to said even if i was born in jos i wouldn't qualify for scholarship because my parents are Hausa or Fulani. Let me say this i know Ibo christian kids who were born in Niger Republic and went to school in Niger and went to University in Niamey on the expenses of the tax payers of Niger. In fact one of them is now living in Port Harcourt even though his parents are still in Dosso Niger. For those who don't know Niger republic is 99% Muslim. |
Re: Hausa-Fulanis Are Indigenes Of Jos– Passali by goggs(m): 2:23pm On Sep 26, 2011 |
Let us not delude ourselves, nigerians identify with something from their heritage and that is a trait we cannot wish away. Let me tell you my experience while growing up in Adamawa State (I'm not from there sha). There was a community that was so pleased with the contributions of an Igbo business man in their mist that they honoured him with a title that made him a member of the local traditional council who sat with the chief to decide local matters. Also, another igbo man was elected counsellor and served his term meritoriously. Its obvoius that the Igbos distinguished themselves and never dabbled into local politics uninvited but were called to serve and did so well. I am sure that community will always hold Ibgos in high esteem. What is obvious in the Jos case is that the Hausas uninvited started dabbling into chieftancy and traditional matters which ought to be the preserve of the natives. If they had comported themselves, assimilation and indigenenization would have taken place naturally. Moreso, when the Gbom Gwom Jos appointed one of theirs as a traditional title holder (he was to later declare himself Emir of Jos!). I think it was an affront to the traditional sensibilities of the Beroms, Anaguta and Afizeres, who have maintained peace among themselves as to how their traditional affairs are being handled. With the meddling of the Hausas, Jos has not known peace. If the Anaguta's and the Afizeres were fighting the Beroms for the Gbom Gwom stool, then the problem would have been like a Gordon knot going by their shared history. But with the Hausas, Government panels upon panels have reach similar conclusions that the Hausas are courting trouble. Yet the Hausas will not give up their quests. Going through the various reports on the crisis, I find it difficult, as an observer, to side with the Hausas. The criminal recalcitrant behaviour of their elders is causing loss of lives, and the hardening of positions on both sides. Its like yoruba or Igbo declaring their rights to the throne of the emir of Kano! If longevity of stay is what the Hausas in Jos say gives them the right to aspire for the throne of the Gbom Gwom then the Yorubas and other nationalities who have been there long enough in Kano (like the Jukuns who even conquered part of the north in days of old) also share the same rights. Let us not be naive to think that we can be like Americans who can freely claim indigeneship of anywhere in America. Its because most of them are settlers. Majority of Hauwaians, Peuto Ricans and American Indians have strong affinity with their ancestral home that is why, for example, peuto ricans are agitating for greater autonomy from the main land. It is a natural human trait to identify with a source and there is nothing wrong with that. What is important is for Nigerians to identify their host communities and respect their rights, heritage and peculiarities so that living with them will be stress free. In time we will be assimilated based on mutual respect for each other and not violence or intimidation. |

That man is a stupid man claiming hausa-fulani to be indigene of jos is a silly claim by that man. They can only be citizens and can never be indigene of our own north central. I would have even plead with the gbong-gwom to give them equal right but they will never adopt the tradition of their host community, biroms keep killing them and nothing will happen. |

trenchcoat:I am trying desperately not to call you a fool. Faggo:I would not agree totally with you on Berom immigrating from Cameroon but i believe that the Hausa Fulanis are settlers in Plateau. They got there in the course of the propagation and expansion of Islam. Most of the areas in Jos North were actually discovered and populated by the Fulanis before the expansion of the population of the Du/Berom people. On the issue of who a native is, Nigerian constitution is totally defective. odumchi:No body knows because Nigerian constitution is not helping matters. abadaba:EXACTLY, MY POINT ekt_bear:Yorubas are minority in Kogi State. There are some people bearing Yoruba names in Kogi state but are not really Yorubas. My query is, if Yorubas are indigenous and were the first in the state, how come they are minority and are not evenly spread? Yoruba as a language is widely spoken in Kogi but not all the speakers are Yorubas. Infact, from my unpublished assessment, most of the Igalas are bi-lingual, speaking their native language and Yoruba. |

We really need to think about what Passili is before we spew venom. Is it really fair to have been born in a place, lived there all your life and not have any rights? Many of these Hausa folks pay taxes too. Taxation without representation is tyrannical. I once read an article where a Hausa/Fulani from Jos requested that he should be given a right based on state of origin rather than Nigerian citizenship without a state because as it stands now, citizenship rights accrue to individuals through state. Thus, if you are stateless, Nigerian citenship confers nothing to you. He lamented how his ancestors migrated to Jos over three hundred years ago but yet he could not get any rights. They always told him go back to his state of origin. However, he knew no other state of origin but Plateau. His story was touching! The only problem I see is the hypocrisy of the Hausa/Fulani. A few years back, the Igbo asked for the same rights that the Hausa/Fulani are now asking for and you guess it: they convinced other Nigerians that Nd'Igbo were attempting to take over Nigeria and the first black on black genocide directed against Igbo ensued. Forget the primordial feelings, we will all benefit from making the citizenship of Nigeria count for all regardless of where you originate from. This dichotomy of indigene/settler should be abrogated and should no longer exist in these modern times. If Obama could become the president of the most powerful nation on earth despite his African heritage, we must all join hands and make Africa a better home for all. We must all find a more pefect way to live together in brotherhood irrespective of tribe. As an Igbo from Anioma, I found Passali's position about Igbo in Asaba and Rivers State as incongruent and inapposite. Igbo are indigenous to Asaba/Anioma area and Rivers state. They are not settlers (I hate to use the term) like the Hausa/Fulani in Jos. Mr. Passali, forget the propaganda about native tribes in Niger Delta-the Igbo still predominate therein. They are not migrants but natives. Just don't listen to the cacophany emanating from certain tribe/quarters attempting to make Niger Delta synonymous with a particular tribe. At best that tribe is 3rd in Niger Delta after Igbo, Ibibio/Efik/Annang trifecta. Urhobos might have something to say about that 3rd position too. September 29, 2011 is world Igbo day. As an Igbo, I use this opportunity to remember many of my people that died trying to make Nigeria a more perfect union. I say thank you to those who died so that I might live. You did not die in vain. Hindsight is 20/20. Now we are beginning to see the things you saw and died for in Nigeria. We shall overcome! Nobody should take this last paragraph as an affront rather it is meant for solemn reflections for Igbo people. |
