Please, is it necessary to chain all the wall of a 3bedroom flat with lintel? |

Rexology: Actually the primary purpose of lintel is to cover the opening void top area to receive block or brick There are others material aside concrete to cover such area I.e specially made thick plastic, steel beam, reinforced concrete. So it’s not compulsory to chain it round but if you have enough money to do so then you can go ahead to do so it’s will gives some secondary purposes. More so if you have columns in the building and you chain it round it will help to transfer load to the columns then from the columns to the soil strata 2 Likes |

Rexology: To save some money: Chain the external walls, for interior walls only put beam on door ways. If there's money: chain all walls! It helps to stop further propagation of cracks caused by heavy weight of roof 2 Likes |

Focusmind: Let me attempt to ease your confusion. Please note that EVERY HOUSE NEEDS AN INSPECTION CHAMBER be it plastic, pre-cast or in-situ built. This forum can be a rich source of information regarding building, but occasionally, some fancy impractical dreamy ideas are propagated by some. They see some solutions abroad or online and without a full understanding of the situation and solution, start calling for such to be implemented in Nigeria without marrying the abroad (internet) solutions with the practical reality in Nigeria. This T-pipe and chamberless home is a dreamer idea. You need chambers to have access to periodically clean and maintain your drains. Not only when the drains are blocked. You should clean your drains minimum twice a year. The chamber offers the possibility to do so without disrupting the drain network. You need chambers to isolate the problem when the drain is blocked. This is particularly important in a block of flats. For example, you have a block of flats and Flat B is blocked. With chambers, you can isolate Flat B and deal with the problem without affecting other flats unlike T-pipe where you need to shut down the whole drain system just to fix a simple problem. And with T-pipe, any blockage will affect the whole flats. This is a cheap amateur plumbing solution. Not professional. Now abroad solution and applying same to Nigeria. It is a legal requirement that homes MUST have inspection chambers. In the UK, we call it drains. This is where waste water and rain water flow into in the first instance and then into the council drains. No building will pass mortgage or planning approval with T-pipe as chambers. This is just a fancy idea. There is this flat I wanted to extend and modernised here in the UK. The extension means the drain needs to be moved. My council turned down the application because they weren't convinced there's enough room to include a proper inspection chambers. So go with your plumber. If you don't like the aesthetics of protruding chambers, do the chambers below ground level or at street level. But chambers you must have for periodic maintenance of your drains. Not only when they are blocked. 6 Likes 1 Share |

n3xt: Yes. That's the job of the roof beam. But many homeowners dont do it cause of finances. Some people just fill up the block holes of the top course |

n3xt: With roof beam, you still need columns to transfer the load to the foundation. With this our kobo kobo bungalows, how many columns do we put in them? We just use 2x6 wood as beam and trust the blocks to carry the load. |
Re: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by n3xt(m): 4:12pm On Aug 23, 2020 |
coldcandy: I rest my lord. Edit: Again, don’t you think you need columns to support the imposed load of the chained lintels? This is why your structural drawing should always be your reference and not how Mr. ABC did his own or as the spirit led. 2 Likes

n3xt: Personally I think his response was a bit harsh. But oh well. In all the houses that I’ve built and have seen built in the USA none has any silly inspection chamber like they have here in Nigeria. The only ones they include is on the street side before the sewer. I’ve been living in my house now in Nigeria for 5 years and no blockage has ever occurred. Cleaning twice a year? Why? Is it a public shalanga? The only time to touch a clean out is when it’s blocked. But maybe the traditional block ones block periodically. Who knows. It’s practical for me, works for me and I will continue to use them. (Please refer to Hajjis signature for disclaimer) 3 Likes

n3xt: Yet again you are missing the argument or confusing the situation. The photos you attached are PVC chambers as the case may be. The OP is being advised to do away with a professional plumber to my opinion because he advised the OP to adopt a superior plumbing solution to include chambers. If I may add, PVC chambers are not flexible. They may not conform to your building drain network design hence the need to build the chambers to align with the design of the built. This is one of the reasons we do certain things we do in Nigeria; to conform to the practical reality in Nigeria. Not that Nigerian builders are st u pid and we abroad people are smarter. Going forward, some are saying the modern approach is substituting T-pipe which I have attached for chambers. That chambers are not necessary. Egun said they are ridiculous though for personal reasons he qualified. The call for chamberless home and substituting T-pipe for chambers is a ru bbish idea really. Any plumber that does that doesn't know what he or she is doing. Not that PVC or pre-cast chambers don't work. They do. Any which way, the home needs inspection chambers. Now let me put back the question to you: look at the T-pipe I have attached and tell me how you would carry out blocked or maintenance work without tearing down the whole drain network if T-pipe is installed instead of chambers? 3 Likes

Now I get it sir. When we talk about PVC inspection chambers, T-pipe is just one out of the many components required. There’s Y-pipe fittings. There are reducing pipe fittings. There are angles, bends, lid etc. There’s 4in system and 6in system. The system is and should be designed by pros. You only need k-rod to do maintenance and that’s if you ever need to. We don’t use tissues here diordaves: 1 Share

Abolarin91: If you already have land and a building plan, have someone help you stake out your gate and septic tank then plant away. You’ll move in with matured trees. This is what I did at my micro estate. I have five trees that will mature for new residents to sit under and also eat from. |
