You just split out trash here and this shows how limited and ignorance you are about academic system. How I wish I can see you in person to prove some things for you. Talking about SIWES and I. T program as if university students are there to joke for 5 years.
Next time before you comment, try and have a balance understanding about the topic and content.
6 months. I employ both in my office so don't argue. My colleagues have attested same. Don't argue. No business man wants to waste money on trash. A lot of university students lack a lot and we don't have time for that.

Which practical are you referring to? Who tells U University students do not undergo practical exposure. I read Agric Economics for 5 years with 1 year full practical. I served in Kano State with HND graduates in the sane discipline. Our employers knew the difference without me talking.

Why not start awarding a Bachelor of Technology (B. Tech) after a HND?

Even when they bring it abroad schools and employers are confused because the equivalent is not common

They even have an association. Funny how people are always quick at pointing out practical aspect of HND holders, as if B.Sc holders don't do practicals too. Most of these HND holders would have opted for university if they have had the opportunity.

He's forgetting the "nepotism" involved in admission hence where you see admission is where you go. You mustn't be bright to attend a university. Just have the connect. There are people with very high jamb score who couldn't afford UNIVERSITY cos of nepotism hence saw Polytechnic and went. He's so uninformed
you nailed it man..... Unethical disparity isn't right. Thank you sire

After you score 168 in jamb you are hoping to be admitted into a university, seems you guys are sick, you deserve the HND, HND is for people who perform poorly in jamb, but the truth is that the HND holder ends up becoming academically sound, honestly, I envy them when dey come to unilag dli to run direct entry, they are so good.
Which dirty 168? Come on, commot for here. After una don settle finish una go come here dey look down on poly students. I am not a poly student but these university students dey vex person, after cheating your way through the system you come to feel boss. Nna ehm.

There is no bullshit greater than this. I was in the polytechnic before heading to the university. They were two of the best schools in their category and I can confidently tell you you're biased and perhaps a victim of the discrimination.

While I don't support or give in to the discrimination, let's quickly be clear on something. The polytechnics house a lot of the dullest Nigerian students. This is not to say there aren't good ones.

Again, the issue of having more practical advantage is another truckload of bullshit. I mean, polytechnics are just far behind and wouldn't catch up because of poor funding. They don't even have electricity to run functional laboratories. Nothing works in the polytechnic.

Many universities alike are so as well but I was in one of the top three universities and polytechnics and the difference is just not quantifiable.

Gbayii bro.
Not only dullest, it's dullest plus rough students.

This you did to be accepted in the job society not that it was necessary (as per knowledge wise). Whenever you get to the field, you'll deliver and then it will look like "all thanks to UNN" where as you have that Polytechnic advantage which is what built you. Now tell me, what about the massive rest that didn't have the opportunity you have? This is what I'm saying. University system has lost it.
I get your point though
Bro the truth be told, on the average university students are far better than the Polytechnic students. During my days in the Polytechnic we were about 300 in my class but less than 20 students are good and above average.

Then I moved to UNN we were 115 in my class and out of that number about 108 or more are good and above average.

I'm not saying Polytechnic students are all dull but only few are go to go

So sad! TBH the students universities graduate these days are Nothing to write home about. All they are interested In is social media. University education has lost it's relevance in recent times and operate in "PAST GLORY". To my greatest shock, a lot of Polytechnic students have been delivering of late (and even college of health tech.). Very intelligent and serious minded people even in the field. I was made to understand that due to the "practical nature of the Polytechnic system" they get more serious and are exposed to a lot hence their ability to deliver.
As an employer of labour, I'd rather go for a Polytechnic graduate (who knows the job and need not be told what to do) than a university graduate who knows nothing. I'll not have to spend money on training them (Polytechnic graduates) as they are really no freshers and are exposed more in the job environment. Their SIWES (nd1), full IT (After ND which they naturally go look for full time jobs) gives them edge over university graduates. I must confess, they really deliver in the field (At least from all I've worked with TRUTH BE TOLD). IT SHOULD BE EQUATED

university has lost its glory....all they are interested in is social media.... where did u get this from... so polytechnic student don’t do social media??

False analogy. Not tailored to point of discussion, discrimination. Lower level workers usually do bunch of work in any organization. An unlettered person can farm a great deal to provide food to many. So what's your point?

Please you guys should stop saying that Polytechnic students are better than the University students. I'm a product of both university and Polytechnic. The University I went was fire in terms academic excellent, that almost everyone in my class are good and above average. But in Polytechnic, just a handful of students in my class know what they were doing while others are!!!! Let me reserve my comment

Wow... I now understand you, but let me enlighten you a little.
The reason why University and HND certificate can't be equal is because their STANDARD is different, the INTENT of creating them is different from each other, their CONTENTS are different, their PROCESS is different and these make their ROLES to be different in labor market or field.
For your own organization, the problem is that because you didn't know about the explanation I gave above, you put the two incompatible products together and expect them to deliver the same thing, NO. Understand their roles and place them therein and see the difference. We are talking about analysis and research work.

University engineering student is AN ENGINEER on field, while HND engineering student is A TECHNOLOGIST on field.

Are there Professors in polytechnic, No !

You can't compare a University degree holder lectured and taught by Professors to a HND holder....

I will advise any HND holders to upgrade his/herself by getting a University degree.....

The world is moving very fast now, a time will come thy will be unemployeable.

Take it or leave it !

Gone are the days where an awo student was seen as a brain box. Now you get so disappointed I tell you. You'd see a student of mapoly, nekede or some STATE POLY FROM THE NORTH delivering better. I'm saying this with much bitterness and concern. Even UNN students too. University system is collapsed Tbh. So far only unilag that I've seen are "sort of" ok (and still some disappoint). Poly students are good I MUST CONFESS (and funny enough monotechnic students too from "STATE INSTITUTIONS AND NOT EVEN FEDERAL"wink. THESE ARE THE BEST NOW BUT THE MEDIA TRIES TO KILL IT COS IT WOULD BE A SHAME ON THE UNIVERSITY SYSTEM. They should be EQUATED that's the truth
not that good, I served with some of them, I was so disappointed... The ones I sch with ended up with first class though... But d guy's I served with that had Hnd damn bro... I think most polytechnics don't have profs, and they pay for so many things even final year project

You need 3 credits to gain admission in poly, universities accept minimum of 5 credits including English and maths.

Jamb score for poly is lower than that of poly.

How do you want equality when standard was lowered for you?

Have you ever heard of polytechnic professor?

I wouldn't tell you that because I'm an alumnus and it would be a shame to put that up. I eventually graduated from UNILAG, if you will know though.

I understand both systems like the back of my palm. If you've not been there, you wouldn't understand.

Why can't you state the Polytechnic you attended? Now, I can see why you are trying to amplify any difference(s) whatsoever which exists.

This HND holders with their entitlement mentality. This discrimination has been there for ages and you think this is the right time to change the status quo, having lagged behind in intellect with your contemporaries who struggled so hard to beat the admission standard obtainable in universities.

No one in Nigeria would have desired polytechnic education if given an option to attend university. So why crying foul now. It's never a rewarding adventure to compromise standard. Always aim to be among the best to avoid unnecessary struggle to upturn reality.

Why try to insult their intelligence? Are admissions lists only based on merit?

Want it on this Nairaland we read about students who pay to get good grades in our institutions of learning? These talks are not worth our time and each individual should work on him(her)self until we attain the level of change we desire.
