izzou:Things will evolve when educated Muslims and ex-Muslims speak and continue to speak against vices like Sharia, child marriage, terrorism. Things don't just evolve or change miraculously without any agent of change. But I do agree with you that northern Muslims will have mind evolution with time. It will take a long time. And thanks to the Internet and social media, many Muslims (whether in the North, or elsewhere) can interact with people with diverse philosophies around the world. Such interactions make one become enlightened and smarter (and it's a 2-way thing, i.e. each discussant can learn or benefit from each other once people argue with facts, not sentiments). 8 Likes |

gensteejay: Illiteracy is on a high side over there...no jokes Adapting to changes over there is very slow. It takes an educated an enlightened mind to be open minded. These are very strong limitations in the North People like Dangote and Atiku and the Northern elites are probably condemning this decision in their living rooms, but they can't come out to say it, because they know the very high level of extremism over there Even the Muslim lawyers that endorsed his execution may have done that to save their faces. Dem no dey laugh with stuffs like Mohammed for there. It takes more than just shouting to stop this. The herd needs to see the light first, before they'll understand your point 3 Likes |

afrodoc2: Regardless, it's still a facetious position. There are laws in place in the country to deal with people who marry underage. So what is the meaning of 'speaking out'? How many times have these people felt the need to 'speak out' about yahoo or ritual killings which are fairly common crimes in Southern Nigeria? Does this mean that yahoo or ritual killings are widely accepted and not against the law? What purpose does speaking out serve? The people who do these things are well aware that the law doesn't look kindly on their activities...and they don't care! Let the law handle it's business, or you join police and arrest niggas But don't stand and form enlightened nigga, when in the so called advanced countries, even their leaders are nacking under age... 6 Likes |

nihilistjnr: You don come again with your wahala. Looking for trouble as usual. Get this, a man is now on death row for "blasphemy". A man is about to legally lose his life, simply for speaking against a religion. Lawyers are AFRAID of defending the man because they don't want to be killed too. A formal body of Muslims have formally endorsed the death penalty for "blasphemy". This is no more just a problem of radicalism but an essential obstruction of free speech. Someone could even overlook the problem of child marriage and say e no concern me, but are you not terrified when the basic rule of law and it's interpreters formally endorse radicalism in a society that is supposed to be secular. Go to that thread on front page i posted and see the outrage. 12 Likes 2 Shares |

eph12: There's nothing to assume there. Their position is clear In the West, an average Yoruba lady will marry a Christian and nothing happens. In the north, it's almost impossible In the West, a Muslim enjoys alcohol. Infact we have Muslims running Betting businesses and clubs (Shina Peller, Akin Alabi, Kessignton). In the North, that cannot happen In the West, there is no Hisbah Police. In the North, they are very effective I could go on and on. The Northerners are the problem, not Islam 3 Likes 1 Share |

nihilistjnr: Yeah i wasn't supporting his position. Was just pointing out what he meant. Talking about the blasphemy conviction, Christianity was also once like that. To be fair only education AND some form of activism from moderates WITHIN the culture can change the situation. Also crucial is a separation of church and state. These were the changes that happened in the Christian world to move them past the days of The Inquisition and the Salem Witch Trials. 7 Likes |

izzou: Izuchukwu, that you didn't see or experience any abuse from the hisbah police doesn't mean that they are not there. 12 states in Nigeria formally adopt the sharia law. Yes, some western states are not as radical as their northern counterparts because they (the Moslems) don't have the preponderance over the rest. But why are the so-called "liberal" Muslims not doing enough to stomp out radicalism? How many prominent Muslim influencers speak out against radicalism? 8 Likes |

The North risks going down the road of Pakistan where any Muslim who has personal beef with a non-muslim can just gather one or two people and accuse their enemy of blasphemy just to get rid of them. It is quite a foolish law to implement in a multifaith society and the fact a group of muslim lawyers rubber-stamped it shows the pressure on them is tremendous. No reasonable thinking educated person in the privacy of their own room will think it is a good idea. It is a law that whips up mob sentiment and inflames mob mentality. Pakistan is having regular riots when their courts free people accused of blasphemy (no Judge will want to easily sentence a man to death on hearsay evidence). Everytime a judge frees someone accused of blasphemy, there will be riots all over Pakistan. Pakistan President was on radio show the other week trying to promote investment opportunities for his country and all the journalist was interest in asking him was about one Christian woman found not guilty of blasphemy, sparking multiple riots all over the country. See him entering long shalaye about how the Government is protecting her and looking for another country to grant her asylum. The interviewer just kept picking at him on this point, and what he came on the radio show to promote was overshadowed. 13 Likes 1 Share |
