Ironically; even as an Arhitect I learnt most of the things I know working under a QS... THERE IS SOMETHING CALLED EXPERIENCE....... and YES; ANY1 ON THE BUILDING INDUSTRY (Archy, QS, Builder or Structural Engr) can lead the team. anything else is politics 12 Likes |

Donoppy: Boss, the work of QS is to prepare BILL OF QUANTITY, visit site to do some measurement during valuation and also prepare variations bow on any projects. Most of QS do not have the real understanding of services work(I mean electrical and mechanical work ). They normally have a lot of omissions and all these leads to additional works /variations. |

n3xt: So I decide to DIY the pier cap and it’s going to be lot of fun. I intend to achieve Pic 1. using the ball attached to a water tank float valve ball (pic 2 below) as my concrete mold. I got a 25mm water tank float valve (pic 3 & 4) with a 300mm diameter ball which is just perfect for the pier cap. My welder is currently helping to reinforce the plastic to prevent buckling. I just can’t imagine me paying 50k for a pier cap I’m sure I can produce up to 30 pcs with the 50k. More updates later. 4 Likes

Hello bosses, please advise. I have a small construction that I'm perfecting documents for at LASPPA. But they complained about some setbacks and exit stairs being close to the fence. So, they are planning to give us Condolence approval (instead of the Final approval). My concerns now are: * What's the implication(s) of that. * Is the Condolence approval tenable at LABSCA for Stage permit? |

mrsteel: I think he’s talking about field experience which still remain a highly desirable experience by clients and employers alike. This can come from anyone (Builder, QS, Architect, or even property investor). Some homeowners even know much more than most of their supervisors nowadays. Your work experience can show a potential client whether you can handle tough working environments, meet deadlines, manage complex projects and work well within a team, your certifications on the other hand display an individuals’ depth of understanding of the subjects taught in school. Remember some subjects are bought too I’d rather give my job to an illiterate plumber who have successfully installed over 3,000 houses in Lagos than the one who have an advanced certificate in plumbing and mechanics but without experience. Let’s come home. When you go to most mixed-use developments around in town, you’ll still see that it’s those Baba Jide/Baba Yisa the experienced plumbers (called agbalagba plumber) that get the big jobs done. So I see nothing wrong in an architect learning or working under a QS, especially if the QS is the “agbalagba” in the industry. 8 Likes |

n3xt:In other words it is safe for an illiterate trader building houses to lead an engineer because he has field experience? When u want to build a good structure, go give it to baba yabasi because he got field experience! What happens to the professionals with field experience? You should know I was referring to standard approach of doing things. I know we have uneducated old men in villages building houses, should that now be the norm & they made to lead engineers? I don't expect anything different from a computer scientist turn builder though & those that built their houses without the presence of an engineer on their build throughout the construction phase. They are sure to support this! Abeg I no fit argue! 9 Likes |

n3xt:Experience they say can't be bought in the market and it is only gotten by doing the job. This "agbalagbas" have been doing the job for years with no formal education (with the exception of few) The bolded is so true. I have a neighbor who toilet has been give him an issue they have called different plumbers to come fix it, yet it didn't get the job done yet money has been spent. They called the "agbalagba" it took less than 5 mins to detect the fault and lessser amount to fix this same issue. He later got the plumbing job for 3 building in that close. From that day, I go with experience. 5 Likes |

Hi everyone. Please I need advice from the professionals here. Just started my first project and I think my engineer is not helping the cost. We are doing German floor now and he told me the masons are charging 10k and helper 3k? We hired a concrete mixer and he is paying the workers 800 per bag in addition to the cost of hire and operator? Is this the standard? I am new to this 1 Like |
