Grade The Yoruba And Igbo Relation With The British. by marsman: 9:49am On Aug 29, 2020 |
Good morning fellow NL, i recently came across a story, about how two tribes ( Yoruba and Igbo), in the southern parts of the Nigeria treated the Whites when they, came to the shores of the present Nigeria. The whites as we all know, came to explore our land and take all the important minerals such as, gold, silver, coal and our brothers as slaves, but some of our greedy forefather sold, themselves before the British took over the slave trade. The Yoruba's invited the British as guest, into there kingdom, wanting to share from The knowledge of the white man, who had photography, guns , ships, wore suit etc. But it didn't take long for the white to cease control, of the kingdom. The Igbo's on the other hand, didn't want anything to do with the white man, fought a war with the white man for complete 31years with lots of casualty on the Igbo's side, but with all the fighting and casualty on there sides, they were still conquered and invaded. I will like to put it up for an arguments on this forum, who made the most reasonable decision, was it the Yoruba's who invited the British in to there land, to share there Knowledge with them,(this Same knowledge was used to clamour for there Independence) , Or The Igbo who stood their ground, for complete 31 years and resisted the whites not minding the casualty but was later defeated. marsman:firstly igbos traded with the whites for years , we welcomed them with our arms open unlike the yorubas that begged them to come rule them before they kill themselves finish Igbo man even till now can never give up his right to rule himself no matter the cost ... u people need to understand how we igbos value life n freedom ....death was never a form of punishment neither was prison ....if u commit and offence ...u are either fined or excommunicated ....and send to the land of osu ...where people who commit offence that are unforgivable stay ...but you still had your freedom I as an igbo man would die 1 million times than to be a slave once British never defeated the igbos really ...we accepting Christianity was what softened the war and we accepted them 30 Likes 4 Shares |

Here's what Harold Smith, one of the colonial officers the British Government sent to rig Nigeria’s pre-independence elections in favour of the North, had to say about Yorubas and Awolowo resistance to British rule, FROM THE HORSE'S OWN MOUTH: "But the British were not treated as gods by the Yoruba. In my experience, the Yoruba regarded themselves as superior to the British and one only had to read a book written by Awolowo, the Western leader, to know why. The Yoruba were often highly intelligent and they taunted the British with sending inferior people to Nigeria. The Igbo would be humble and avert his eyes in the presence of a European. The Yoruba child would look at an important European and shout, ‘Hello, white man,’ as if he were a freak.” An excerpt from the book Black Critics and Kings: The Hermeneutics of Power in Yoruba Society By Andrew Apter: "As far as it is possible for one race to be characteristically like another from which it differs in every physical aspect, the Yorubas it has been noted are not unlike the English in many of the traits and characteristics. it would appear that what the one is among the whites, the other is among the blacks. love of independence,a feeling of superiority over all others,a keen commercial spirit and of indefatigable enterprise, that quality of never being able to admit or consent to defeat are some of the qualities peculiar to them, and no matter under what circumstances they are placed, the Yorubas will display them(ibid.,xxii) The official christian or white reading is still clear Yorubas are to other Africans what the english are among Europeans at the top of the hierarchy of nations by virtue of shared traits and characteristics. The inferiority of blacks to white, however is implicitly assumed. Oris it? On the point, a deeper reading asserts something else. Yorubas, like the English, they feel superior to all others, enterprising and above all will never consent to defeat no matter under what circumstances they are placed. When these circumstances include British overule,The yorubas will protect their independence feel superior and never accept defeat ABEOKUTA WOMEN REVOLT Abeokuta Women's Revolt led by the Abeokuta Women’s Union (AWU), took place in the 1940s. It was a resistance movement against the imposition of unfair taxation by the Nigerian colonial government ADUBI WAR The Adubi War, known locally as Ogun Adubi, or Egba Uprising was a conflict that occurred in June-August 1918 in Colonial Nigeria as a result of taxation introduced by the colonial government. The war consisted of thirty thousand Egba fighters destroying much of the railway and telegraphs lines south of Abeokuta along with the killing of a European trading agent and a high-ranking Egba chief. The incident was the culmination of the abrogation of Abeokuta's independence in 1918, and the introduction of direct taxation and forced labor in the region. British soldiers who fought in the war received the Africa General Service Medal. TRIUMVIRATO SUGAR MILL REVOLT Carlota Lukumí is a Yoruba woman who led a rebellion alongside a woman named fermina. Femina was locked up after her plans for the rebellion were discovered. Using talking drums to secretly communicate, Carlota and her fellow warriors freed Fermina and dozens of others. They both led an organized well orchestrated armed attacks at triumvarato sugar plantation in Cuba against five plantation operations. There is a monument in Cuba at the Triumvirato Sugar Mill in her memory. THE MALE REVOLT The male revolt is the most significant slave rebellion in Brazil. On a Sunday during Ramadan in January 1835, in the city of Salvador da Bahia, a small group of black slaves and freedmen, inspired by Muslim teachers, rose up against the government. Muslims were called malê in Bahia at this time, from Yoruba imale that designated a Yoruba Muslim. Many consider this rebellion to be the turning point of slavery in Brazil. 46 Likes 11 Shares |

No human should forcefully serve another. Igbo's did well in fighting the British. We've been very objective as a people in our quest for liberty. Quite unfortunately, we have been unsuccessful; falling to British forces which ultimately made us part of Nigeria, and falling again to the Nigerian forces during the civil war thereby keeping us in this contraption. I sincerely hope and pray we are successful in our next campaign for liberty which is certain to commence fully either sooner or later. 22 Likes 3 Shares |

Igbochief001:Sir Robert Lister Bower convinced the 2 warring sides to surrender as they had both been severely weakened during the war.[5] Unable to prevent the occupation of the British, Southern Nigeria was subsequently declared a protectorate of the British Empire. The casualties of the war are unknown, but it is said that there was no killing of children or women, and about 500,000 soldiers fought in the war in total. The British were just lucky, and came at the right time for them. It was until when palm oil was detective in the east, that the slave trade there ended Wikipedia The Niger Delta and Calabar, which once had been known for the export of slaves, became notable for the export of palm oil. The Delta streams were called "oil rivers". Slave occurred in all the parts of Nigeria, the east not exempted. 2 Likes |

LukasPodolski:Talking about facts. The Fulani army did rebel. They fought several wars and were roundly defeated. Oh, it wasn't only the Ijebus who fought the British. I leave the others as an assignment for you. BTW, highlighting the differences between Ijebus and Yorubas is meaningless as somewhat independent subgroups tend to identify with their town names during the colonial times. |
