Below is the photograph that was taken by a South African photojournalist, Kevin Carter, while he was on assignment to Sudan. He took his own life a couple of month later due to depression.

In March 1993, Kevin Carter made a trip to Sudan. Near the village of Ayod, Carter found a girl who had stopped to rest while struggling to a United Nations feeding centre, whereupon a vulture had landed nearby. Careful not to disturb the bird he waited for twenty minutes until the vulture was close enough, he positioned himself for the best possible image and only then chased the vulture away. At this point Carter was probably not awere that he has shot one of the most controversial photograph in the history of photojournalism

The photograph was sold to the New York times where it appeared for the first time on March 26 1993.. practically overnight hundreds of people contacted the newspaper to ask whether the child had survived, leading the newspaper to run a special editor's note saying that the girl had enough strength to walk away from the vulture but that her ultimate fate was unknown. Because of this, Carter was bombarded with questions about why he did not help the girl and only used her to take photograph

As many dramatic photographs, Cater came under criticism. The St Petersburg times in Florida wrote: "The Man adjusting his lens to take just the right frame of her suffering, might just be a predator, another vulture in the scene". The attitude that the public opinion condemned was not only that of taking the picture instead of chasing the vulture immediately away, but also the fact that he did not help the girl afterwards - as Carter explained later - leaving her in such a weak condition to continue the march by herself towards the feeding center.

However, Carter was working in the time when photojournalists were told not to touch famine victims for fear of spreading disease. Carter estimated that there were twenty people per hour dying at the food center, that the girl was not unique. Regardless, , Carter often expressed regrets that he had not done anything to help the girl, even though there were not much he could have done.

In 1994 Kevin won the Pulitzer prize for the disturbing photograph of a Sudanese child being stalked by a vulture. That same year, Kevin Carter committed sucide.

Now, some criticised Carter for not helping the struggling girl while others commended him for taking a rare photograph of the event. What's your opinion??

The op is very correct in his narrative of the situation especially on the suicide committed by the photojournalist out of depression.

I think the journalist probably killed himself out of regret for not developing the initiative of saving the starving lil girl knowing very well the hungry-looking vulture may just start feasting on her alive.

Having said that, it is worthy to note this is just a tip of the iceberg regarding consequences of war, for the information of all the illiterates chanting war songs from sunrise to sunset everyday.

Your situations may not really be favourable to you as compared with others but talking about war? Your generation can be wiped out of existence within hours and heavens will not fall.

In recent times, super power countries like US, Germany, Russia etc mostly fight psychological wars through diplomacy and propaganda, not because they lack the military might but because military wars are always characterised by havoc to both the victors and the vanquished.

Perhaps, experience is actually the best teacher and some need to have that experience. If you think war will improve your situation, then follow your instincts and I wish you goodluck.

I'm done talking. cheesy

War is a terrible thing. Imagine a situation where seeing a malnourished child or a near death situation is seen as a normal. I believe that is the reason why Carter did not rescue the child. Too bad he stopped being human at that point.

Critics drew that man to an early grave. He abided by his code of ethics and did exactly what he was there to do.

I pity those beating war drums for they obviously lack the knowledge of how the dance may look like.

A journalist's first responsibility is to expose the truth bro.. maybe there's nothing he could have done.

This is 21ist century, you don't need war to gain independence mean while Biafra war has already been forth, Scotland is not in war but if Nigerian leaders think of another war with Biafrans then the should think twice

Is there any difference between what that picture illustrates and what is happening in Nigeria today?

The malnourished child represents the average Nigerian, the 90m extreme poverty, the 4m IDP, the over 950k below 5years mortality..

The photographer represents its leaders and politicians waiting for the perfect angle..

The vulture represents the policies created by these politicians, the rise in taxes, the rise in fuel, the inflation etc which only gets closer to gradually taking the life of that child(Nigerian).
