So you will just come to another person's community and dispose them of over 1, 500 hecters of land for Airport, and then turn around to named the Airport after another community?

What is wrong with the brain of an average Nigerian for God sake!

For the records, the name is "Anambra International Cargo/Passenger Airport, Ivite Umueri". If you don't like the name, then go to Onitsha and provide government the land and let them build it there.

Pls don't get me wrong, I don't have any had feelings against Umueri people, they've really tried in providing the government with the large expanse of land for the said Airport, you and I know that one can't get such virgin land in Onitsha. Naming the Airport with Onitsha will do lots of good in marketing it and attracting both investors and visitors compared to Umueri. Delta state Airport, Warri is not located in Warri but in Okpe LGA. Even Port Harcourt Airport is located in another community, the list goes on and on. This new Airport will need as much marketting and publicity as it can get and Onitsha will likely give it that.

Sorry, the airport already has a name : Chief Willie Obiano International Airport Umueri. No community lords it over others in Anambra state except Awka which is the capital and officially has smaller towns around it in the Awka Capital Territory. The official name will be unveiled before Obiano handover in 2022.

Can’t fault your argument if i’m to be honest!

Though don’t you think that in the spirit of brotherhood, you could concede and allow the airport be named after one of the three most outstanding sons of Anambra who are yet to get a airport named after them....i’m speaking of Chinua Achebe; Alex Ekwueme; or Dim Chukwuemeka Ojukwu!?

Yes, I support the naming of the airport after any notable personality of Anambra extraction.

My argument is based on the location. After the name, mention the location.

Naming the airport after its builder "Willie Obiano International airport" is not bad at all. If its just the last thank you gift from the Anambra house of Assembly to honor his meritorius 8 years of outstanding service to Anambra state.

If it was not the tough, dogged character of a man like Willie Obiano, the airport would NEVER be built. Typically, Southeast Governors often like to hide under mountain of excuses of "lack of funds" from doing any major infrastructural project that will truly develop their state. Instead, they will use the money to share bags of rice and palm oil to people that would eat that and remain poor. As against building things that will boost the economy and create jobs so that those people can buy their own rice and oil.

In the Southeast today, only two governors are hungry to give their states true infrastructure to help them leap frog to the next level. These are Obiano and Umahi. Thus, these two men deserve the honor of naming the airports they are building after them. Just like Imo airport was named after Dee Sam mbakwe for his tenacity to build it in spite of all the obstacles he could have cited as excuses why he couldn't build the Imo airport.

Very important, because both sides of road is still virgin lands.

Hopefully, they will make a rule that lands on both sides of that airport road are ONLY Hotels. We should not allow No markets or ugly buildings on that road. it is the first place that international passengers will see when they land in Nigeria, so it needs to have a good ambiance.

In our clime, only hotels tend to take planting of trees and grass seriously. Even government building look like crap in Nigeria. With hotels lining that airport boulevard, you not just have aestheically pleasing enviroment, it helps those using the airport to easily find close lodging to catch midnight flights in the future.

Like how about 5 miles to new orleans Intl. airport, you have hotels on both sides of the road serving airport passengers and making the environment so serene and posh.

I'm from there even though my mum is from Anambra and I'm always happy for any good development in any of the South Eastern states cos I know that a win for them is a win for me too. You re from imo but think u can dictate how an airport in Anambra should be named. U need ur head checked

Every well meaning Igbo has a right to contribute positively on any Igbo related issue. If Anambra were to be in the North or South West then I'd keep mum but as long as it's in the SE and we share same region and culture, I'll contribute

@Oremi, Obiano has to deliver a full functioning airport, before he can demand that the airport be named after him. Trust me, if he delivers a 30-40% complete airport the next governor who will work on the airport wills surely change the airport name and that will be comely.

Totally agree that he'll need to deliver a functional airport that operates at least daylight flights before he could claim he built it. That is totally understandable.

Why cant he just name it Ivite-Umueri airport after the town that donated the large expanse of land the airport is being built on? Obiano is just too local but try to sell himself as a civilized and classy. Did he pay for the airport ? Nonsense.

mktinsight:
Ogun STATE Igr is impressive. Fiscally all SE states are running surpluses except for Abia.

Anambra has roughly had 40b x 6 years or 240b surplus over Obiano’s tenure. That is roughly 700m USD. Where has it been spent?

Onitsha Mall - 1b
Agulu Lake Hotel - 9b
Aguleri Uno Rig Bridge - 23b
Awka Flyovers - 13b
International Conference Center Awka - 2b
Roads other - Unknown
Street lights - unknown

I dont always agree with you but its a common knowledge that Obiano is wasteful. He lacks the frugality of Obi. Take Ebonyi for example, if the state keep going in the same pace they wil beat everybody hands down on infrastructures. The only saving grace of Anambra is our indigenes who are very wealthy but Obiano has mismanaged our resources. The state spend more on recurrent expenditures than capital projects and this is why our growth had stagnated.

I thought you would have asked what Ogun state is doing with their impressive igr instead of questioning Anambra that has been fiscally responsible.

Answer me oga, why is Ogun state fiscally irresponsible despite their 'impressive igr' ?

What goes on in Ogun state is non of our business. Our goal should be to develop our fathers land and pull our teeming youths out of poverty and ignorance. Obiano is a ffucking failure and we all know this. If we had a man like Obi for 16 years no state in Nigeria will measure up to Anambra. How much did Obiano save ? Abeg , stop measuring ddics with Yoruba and focus on your problems...its distraction.

They have gone beyond redemption. Everything about them now is if yoruba have it or did it.

I begin to wonder when an igbo started comparing his strides and development. This shows how far the moral attitude of youths and their psychological well being has deteriorated.

Infact it is hard to see any discussion on nairaland without the so claimed Igbos here jumping on it and start calling Yorubas.

Too bad that their mental well being have moved from stability to decay.

The behavior is totally alien to what Igbos are known for.

Why do you think this happens? Just go take a look at the home page, scroll down and you’d see what i mean! May be if you had taken time to read the post I quoted. Then you might have understood how Ogun state entered the discussion. What goes on in Yoruba states do not bother me, but when you come to an Igbo thread to throw shade with ethnic bias then you get your due reply.

I am not an Obiano apologist. But even if he has not transformed Anambra to Eldorado, he has made giant strides and most importantly had not allowed the state to decay. There are enough statistics to prove that he has not been sleeping on duty. Nigeria have been on economic down slope for the greater part of his administration yet the state keep on performing wonders in all the economic indices of development. I will score him 70/100 in good governance. The remaining 30% I will keep because of some areas where he performed below par.

I love the saving habit of Obi, but I also love the futuristic capital projects like Airport and others. All are investment into the future of Ndi Anambra. Each government will definitely choose an approach. Obiano has not put us in trouble. He is yet to mortgage the state through rising debt like his counterparts all over the nation are doing. He might not be as astute as Obi but he has kept our fiscal balance in green so that we will have enough money to develop Anambra state. His successor will not have to battle reduced FAAC allocation due to loan repayment.

Pension, Salary and gratuity are been paid regularly, there is relative security in Anambra, education sector is not suffering, health sector is receiving attention. I don't want to talk about the agricultural revolution under him.

We all look out for different things in governance. Right now he tick a lot of boxes for me and has my approval.

I assess governments based on certain criteria. Peter Obi, Umahi and Obiano are all good in their own right. But they are three different individuals.

They are all good administrators.
