1. Police that wear black on black and are not good for anything beyond husband and wife fight. They are so useless that they cannot controldog and goats, Area thugs regularly beat police up. these are the police you will call that robbers are in your house and they will tell you to bring car to drive them. They are only good when collecting N20 from motorists

We have
2. Soldiers whose training are for real war. They no dey hear word and are very brutal. They are not fit for society except full blown war and jungle

Then we had
3 Mobile Police, they are like an hybrid of the 2. They are not as weak as normal police and not as fierce as soldiers. These were deployed to help in riots, communal clashes and later to keep law and order in the city because Police were totally inadequate.
We started having Operation Sweep, Rapid Response Squad and SARS which are feared by most and most people initially gave them credit for reducing crime. But as we know things get corrupted, these people became laws onto themselves and go overboard many times. You wont deny that even at this time, criminals cyber criminals, armed robbers still fear SARS more than anyone else

The question now is if we abolish SARS

1. what happens to the good work these SARS do? who will do it?

2. What happens to people you have trained to use guns and now without a means of livelihood. These will be the new vicious armed robbers

I think these pressure will make them know people are watching them closely and any misdeed will be treated as a criminal offence. any extra judicial killing will be treated and tried as a murder case

There is a lot wrong with law enforcement in many places, The field officers are not the most educated and are just a shade better than criminals themselves. Unless you pay more I doubt you will get better than those

N300k is not enough loss for Police to commit man-hours to solve a wire transaction case. Breaking and entering to steal N300k is another matter. In UK, Police will not involve themselves in any electronic fraud less than £10k. They will tell you to contact your bank and let the bank deal with it. Forget the N300K.

Yes, in the last few years, they seem to have now turned their attention to yahoo boys and by extension a lot of young innocent citizens. They became radically extrajudicial and went far beyond the legality of their function.

Calling for a complete shutdown of this once effective agency will only breed further problems down the line. I don't see any other agency that will be as tactile and ruthless with criminals as they were. What happens when crime surges again. The most practical route to take is to enforce hard reformation. Make sure there's greater transparency in their affairs, train them better and reorganize the personal.

That is the bank problem. Bank does not need Police to freeze an account if they suspect some fraudulent activity. Banks themselves have fraud department and should be able to freeze any account that has received funds from a stolen account if the banking sector was in order. When I was younger, my sister transferred me a sum of money that made the bank freeze my account cos they've never seen such a sum in my account before. My sister had to call them and verify herself before they could unfreeze my account. Police no suppose involve in that matter. Police job na to arrest if bank hands over the evidence to them on a plate.

That is the bank problem. Bank does not need Police to freeze an account if they suspect some fraudulent activity. Criminals have always existed, SARS was established in 1992, where were they all this while that you want to ascribe the glory of a problem largely solved by technology to them? the reduction in highway armed robbery at the turn of the last decade cannot be solely attributed to SARS. This was a Period of technological breakout in the banking sector, customers need not move around with cash, as before, when they can easily access ATMs from anywhere.The criminals knew staging up on the highway was a futile endeavor yielding minimal financial returns, why risk life for something not worth the pay? they moved to other vices and intensified on others e.g Internet fraud, kidnapping.

Baba, since I was born, I haven't seen anyone who heard SARS was in the neighborhood without going into hiding, innocent or otherwise. Because even before the internet and social media the citizenry have been aware of their barbaric MO. Unlawful arrests, kidnapping, illegal detention, extrajudicial killings, rape etc. They didn't all start in 1997 or 2010 or 2015, this has been in their makeup. social media only shone the light on them and people can finally see.


As for crimes on our highways, those criminals passed the baton to the police, by extension SARS. On this SARS issue like someone clearly said on radio yesterday; attempting to reform SARS is like trying to make a rotten fish become fresh again: IT IS IMPOSSIBLE!

These SARS guys are mostly ex-cultists, unlettered and enfant terrible who have no boarders when it comes to unleashing terror on the same citizens they are meant to protect. A couple of months ago we saw a video of how they tracked a guy who is an armed robber/kidnapper, in the course of his arrest they ended up harassing his gf asking her derogatory questions like " Who disvirgined you?" " Why are you 4cking a criminal?"" would you be 4cking him if he didn't have cars and a fine house" etc.

I must say it is a wrong notion to say only cultist, armed robbers, yahoo boys etc that want SARS to be disbanded. A whole lot of hardworking Nigerians who have had close shave with death in the course of their encounter with these guys want them disbanded.

As far as 1998 one of my bros( not close relative, but a church member) had a terrible encounter with these daredevil men. He is a transporter who drives commuter buses from iyana ipaja to Ikotun on a daily basis. These SARS guys stopped him said they were going to search his bus; in the process they dropped a bullet in the bus and claimed they found it under one of the chairs. He was arrested on the premise that his bus was being used by armed robbers. This bros was detained for months, we had all lost hope and thought he was going to face firing squad which was the order of the day during the military Era. Though I was much younger then, but I knew several revivals and prayer sessions that was organized by our pastor on his behalf.

In fact that bros lost the gf he was going to marry that time due to the whole issue. Suddenly out of the blues the SARS guys requested for a substantial sum as bail if we want him out. The family and church members rallied round and paid the bail that was demanded. When he was out he narrated his ordeal at his Thanksgiving, believe me you will shed tears if you hear the dehumanizing conditions innocent people are subjected. He said each they the SARS guys kill people for sport . If u survive a day there u will thank God and pray for the same grace tomorrow.

Now imagine something that has been going on for over 20 years despite all the reforms being announced every year, what good do you think any reform will do now?

Recently myself and a friend were on our way for a social function and my friend was driving a Mercedes SUV. We were supposed to make a U-turn and take a shortcut, but before we got to the roundabout, I sighted these SARS guys in a small unregistered bus on the other side of the road patiently waiting for their prey. Immediately I called my friend's attention to this, he said we were going to follow the longer route to avoid the SARS guys ( mind you myself and friend are gainful y employed and we had our work ID's on us, but we know that won't stop those guys from harassing us immediately they see the brand of vehicle my friend was driving). This is to tell you the psychological effect these guys have had on the people they are meant to protect.

What I think should be done:

1. SARS should be disbanded and their members should be retrained, asked to sign a fresh oath to join the normal police force, shave their beards, dreadlocks and dress properly like police officers with name tags on them.

2. If a tactical unit must be formed to checkmate armed robbery, kidnappings and other social vices, then members of such unit should be made to have a special uniform that is easily identifiable and have name tags. The idea of wearing one useless vest on any piece of clothing should be discouraged. It should be a major concern that any armed robber or kidnapper can easily print these vests they wear and use it for carrying out crime while leading people on thinking they are SARS officers.

3. The government should take funding police serious and stop the nonesense of allowing police stations and the DPO's resort to self help when it comes to running the day to day activities of the station financially. I remember around 2017 or so when one stupiiid neighbor's son that had just started going crazy from excessive smoking of weed harassed my parents, we got him arrested and the DPO was about sweeping the matter under the carpet after collecting money from his parents. After I stepped in and we were about to do the DPO dirty, she moved the case to court but IPO said we must pay his transport to and fro court and still grease his palms with recharge card money cos he was not going to use his personal money to go to every court hearing. The police constant demand for money to pursue the case was so much that we had to resort to out of court settlement.

The government should fund the police well enough to enable them do their jobs, if not they will resort to anything to make the money and won't mind frustrating the efforts of people at getting justice

4. Lastly police officers should be made to wear body cam, this way their actions can be reviewed especially in Matters that escalates and results to use of extreme force.
