afrodoc2:I wholeheartedly agree with your submission but we should be very careful of what we wish for in our various commentaries for the betterment of this country. Firstly, I want to point out the fact that the liberty to even protest in the first place was guaranteed by strong democratic reforms and institutions we have in this country. It is then unfair to use the same platform that permits public demonstrations to destroy the core institutions that guarantees it. I don't know what revolution means to you so I don't know how to carefully respond to your post. There are 2 major definitions for Revolution ; revo·lu·tion AW [revolution revolutions] BrE [ˌrevəˈlu:ʃn] NAmE [ˌrevəˈlu:ʃn] noun 1. countable, uncountable an attempt, by a large number of people, to change the government of a country, especially by violent action If this is what you opine that the average Nigerian is scared to effect, then I'm afraid they are taking the right decision. Why should the change of government of a country be through violent action when there are democratic and legitimate means to make that happen? Even at that, it is a very huge gamble as you can end up creating another revolution elitist cabal who will be worse off. Nigeria is an African country that is still evidently divided along ethnic lines. Before you know it, war and conflict profiteers are already here supplying arms to an ethnic group to overcome the others and see to it that they are the majority in the future political ruling class. 2). countable a great change in conditions, ways of working, beliefs, etc. that affects large numbers of people This second definition of revolution is what I wholeheartedly subscribe to. Nigerians, as a group of people need to effect a revolutionary change of thought process and pattern. At this point in Nigeria history, it is evident that a change in our beliefs and values are the necessary changes and revolution we need. Occupying major roads can get the attention of the leaders but after that what next ? 2019 was just a year ago, People queued behind APC and PDP and dismissed other parties because they are not popular enough and cannot win elections. How laughable!? Now you are occupying major roads and highway demanding for good governance. There is a periodic 4 year accountability check for every political post through elections. Take that route. Finally, I have always supported ASUU, NMA and NLC when they go on strike. They are fighting a good cause. 4 Likes |

DontBullshitMe: You have made some good points, however i have to make a number of clarifications. 1) I am not advocating violent action. Protests can be organized and change can be effected without resorting to violence. Also as you have noted revolutions are not inherently violent by nature. It just depends on the actions and reactions of the principal actors on both sides. 2) I was not even debating the merits or demerits of the protests. All i am saying is that the tendency of Nigerians to think of self rather than group and to think short term rather than long term means that civil actions like this are often not fully supported by the masses after the initial stage of excitement. Once it starts to bite each person in the pocket or people start to individually suffer the repercussions in terms of inconvenience, arrests, or suffering our fervor invariable fizzles out. Now to address your point about elections. The people have tried that route every 4 years for the last 20yrs and things keep getting worse. The political class has established a syndicate which scams the people no matter who you vote in and most people are now disillusioned with the process. Also the existence of democracy does not in any way negate the need for a revolution or reform. It is good governance that does that. Good governance is not the same as democracy. The people have chosen democracy only because it is the most reliable tool of achieving good governance (Even though Socrates disagreed with this). Democracy is only the vehicle. Good governance is the destination. As long as good governance remains a dream and not reality the people's aspirations will always draw them towards reform (and revolution if need be). The people have been forced to take the recent actions because of the failure of our democracy in providing good governance, and if our democracy continues to fail us a day will come in which a critical mass of the people will be moved to remove those who have made themselves masters of their fellow citizens. 10 Likes |

My own take is that anybody complaining about this protest is either SARS himself,a police officer benefitting from the system or a government man.if not you will find every means to either join them or use whatever platform you have to support them.People are begging to live, you are complaining of traffic, why dont you take a chopper since where you going is better than seeing young people live . 7 Likes |

This is a unique opportunity where the whole world and even politicians are listening to the Nigerian youths I hope we use this opportunity well and make some fundamental changes. If you are honest enough we would know that we are not heading anywhere with the way the country was going We dont need to fear if it will get worse but we just need to change the way we are going. There is a lot wrong with Nigeria, If ENDSARS will be the opportunity to correct even 10% of it then its welcome Now we have the microphone in our hands, the world is listening, the govt looks like they are listening. We might not get this opportunity again for a long time 15 Likes 3 Shares |

For those in favour of revolution, have a look. The French Revolution turned into nightmare as Napoleon hijacked it and plunged Europe into internecine wars The Bolshevik revolution in Russia ushered in a murderous communist regime The Serbian Revolution of 1914 plunged the world into a war The Revolution of 1966 plunged Nigeria into civil war that we are yet to recover from decades later The Lebanon revolution of the 70s plunged the country a 15year civil war and its effect still felt till today The Iranian revolution ushered in a pariah State in Mideast The Iraqi revolution led to the unleashing of daesh in Levant and Iraq Libyan revolution led to endless bloodletting and bloodbath in Libya and the effects are very much obvious The Syrian revolution created a refugees crisis and other humanitarian catastrophe Call me a coward or a government lackey revolution doesn't always produce the goods and even when it does they're miniscule compared to the harms

Amoto94:A Nigerian revolution is straight anarchy, those example pale in comparison with what's to come, they aren't being direct and are making impossible demands, this has grown beyond endsars, they are talking bad governance and accountability, plenty people have lost their jobs and coronavirus caused serious hardship, government went ahead to make it worst by reducing social spending aka subsidy they will soon use pastors and traditional rulers to try to talk to the youths, if that doesn't work, army will enter the story and it will get bloody from there, maybe coup plot or rampant arrests its the woke celebrities that are making me laugh, government will blacklist many i feel for dangote, guyman will be scared, he knows that nigeria is a boiling pot that can explode at any moment, he fears times like this nigerians are cowards, they will shout and complain but will return home when they get tired, let them protest till next month first let me see, companies supplying food and other amenities will soon enter trouble, i doubt if it will get to revolution level sha, maybe small anarchy |

afrodoc2:Paragraph 1 Positive changes are acceptable to me and I don't mind making personal sacrifices to make it happen. Paragraph 2 Your position here can't be faulted by me. It is an open secret that majority of Nigerians collectively find it hard to see through any effort of reformation once the process begins to demand self-denial and sacrifices from the actors. Paragraph 3 I agree that the political class have created a elitist syndicate that cannot be easily overthrown or challenged. In my honest opinion, since we have agreed to this, the displacement of these hegemonic cabal should be the first course of action. When you organise demonstrations and protests, you are still relying on these people to make your demands come into fruition. That brings me to ask the question : Instead of asking these people to do what's right, why not dislodge and replace them and do it ourselves. Paragraph 4 Thank God you agree with me that democracy is the most reliable tool for good governance. Leave Socrates alone abeg . Since we have realised that democratic practices have done us little good, I wager that the best thing is to change our democratic actors not collapse the entire democracy. Paragraph 5 What is Good governance? I do NOT intend to absolve the Government but when we take realistic and logical look at the situation of things in Nigeria, the government cannot perform beyond its capabilities. Take for instance : Nigeria's total budget for the year 2020 is a measly 34 billion dollars for a more than 200 million population. On the other hand, Kenya's budget (our younger brother) is 25 billion dollars with a population of 52 million. You can start connecting the dots. Out of this budget, subsidy needs to be paid on electricity, fuel, education and even health. How much remain? . Before we now factor the oga patapata which is government corruption. . Finally, I guess we just have to hope that the end of all of these (protests, call for change/revolution) justify the means. 1 Like |
