If you’ve got the resource it is a very nice town to live and raise your family.. you can get a train into London just over 1.2hr ....

Lastly it’s a very English town mostly white resident( not really diverse). If that’s not a problem for you then it’s a good place

Welcome...what area are you looking to stay? Near the city centre? near a school? Near the high street? Near the hospital? What kind of house are your looking for? A room? 2 rooms? A bungalow, a terraced house? A semi detached or a country home? So many questions...you need to know what you want first then find the kind of house you want in the area you want...use the postcode of the area you want to search for a place...spare room for rooms and rightmove for houses...

Students don’t pay council tax(I’m guessing you are) your school will give you council tax exemption letter, take it to the council office to be registered.

If you are not a student and living in a multi occupant building then the issue of council tax is a bit tricky, basically not everyone living in that building pays. Is like driving without licence until the day police caught up with you.

If one person in that building pays council don’t usually come knocking unless there is a snitch or you registered to vote.

Yes, it is possible to sort it out before arrival but both landlords and agencies ask for deposit so you won't be able to avoid paying it.

If you are looking to sort it out while in Nigeria, it's better to go through a reputable agency just to be on the safe side.

On the other hand, maybe you should consider, Airbnb or B&B for a few days post arrival then go look at the properties before making payment. You can book viewings and all that the week/few days before arrival.

Alternatively, can anyone help with the process of travelling to nja; it just seems a nightmare getting the test, booking flights and then another test and returning to the UK.

Then rightmove or zoopla should help...just search with the first 3 letters of the postcode of the area you would love to stay....for example if you want to stay near Queen Alexandra Hospital just type on google "2 bedroom house to let in PO6"

The deposit is generally what you will pay for the next month's rent anyway, so it shouldn't be a problem; you must have it already anyway.
There will still be references requested or a guarantor or some months' rent upfront in lieu.

So if you're not willing to pay in advance for a place as yet unseen, then you'd best come over first and rent an Airbnb while you sort things out on the ground.
