My sister, that is the most common na. I asked a Nairalander what his username Omiobo meant and he told me"monkey water". Obowunmi says his name means "I feel like owning a monkey."

I don't think it's about being cool. I think that's also about virtue.

The same way that some people name their kids after lions or leopards, to depict that they are as strong as those animals, so also do people name their children after other humans, especially people that are dead, with the hope that the child will imbibe the virtue of the person that they are named after.

So people name their children Solomon, with the hope that the child will be as wise as King Solomon, etc.

Athanasius was a bishop of Alexandria in Egypt and some people thought that he was wise. That might be the reason that they name their children after him.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Athanasius_of_Alexandria
wow. Didn't even know this. I've had this cocky expression whenever anyone tell me his name is Athanasius or even Donatus.

The ones I usually smirk at are the ones who tell me "my name is Prosper". I usually say within me like your parents took one good look at you and knew you're are failure then named you Prosper just to massage their ego and make them feel better about birthing a failure grin

This things with names is something else. Hehehehe.

So my sister put to birth yesterday and I couldn't take the thought of how and why a certain name is given to a child.

like how do you come up with names on the spot and also importantly the meaning attached to it.

Do you backup name options before the child arrives or is there something am missing.
Name him Buhari grin

religiously typing, all days are attached to names given to new born babies.

on a neutral ground, both the parents have their own names to give the baby.

as a parent, find a suitable and beautiful names for your baby. names that when called outside, it will sound beautiful to the ears and even when outside of the country, it would be pronounceable.

well, as for me, I already have 6 different names for my female unborn kids and 6 for male.

names that you will hear and love.

As a parents, stop naming your kids after events that has happened in your life or past. It is the Child’s fate, not yours, this is nothing but selfishness to name a child based on a parents past experiences.

crackhaus:

Some people do this, plan/list names they intend to give their unborn child(ren).
Even I have been guilty of this, BUT after a certain experience, I now find that this method can be a wee bit contrived (for lack of a better word).

Personally, I now find it fascinating when children are given names that encompass the circumstances surrounding their birth – could be an experience during the pregnancy, or even an experience right there in the labor ward.

Some parents also choose names that are futuristic in expression, in the sense that they believe something about the child that will/may become that child's reality much later on – this also works.

Whatever method people choose anyway, the basic idea is to always know the meaning, origins, and history behind a name (assuming you don't want to give one that is based on a person experience)
I have noticed that a lot of people simply pick names that sound posh/hip/modern without having a deeper understanding of their meanings.

Names like Jessica, Vivian, Henry, etc cheesy

Even before you were born, I knew you. I just feel every name is inspired by God so it comes naturally either through the parents or even grandparents.

so what does Ekundayo mean in Yoruba?

Ekun means crying/tears e. g ekun e ti po ju (your crying is too much) . But in that context, "Ekun" means "sorrow" and Dayo means "becomes joyful". In Yoruba land, every family has prefix name like Ekun, Ade, Ola, Oye etc. due to what had/is happened/happening to them or their ancestors.

We called Ekun(tiger) in my area.
Your "ekun" means tears/sorrow. Same spelling but different pronunciation.

The word Dan in Hausa means son.

Dantata = son of Tata.
Dangote = son of Gote

(The name of the nanny that took care of Alhassan Dantata was Tata and so people started calling him "son of Tata" = Dantata).

The word "Ap" means son in Welsh. Therefore:

Madog ap Rhys = Madog son of Rhys.

The suffix "son" is used in Icelandic. Therefore:
.
Gunnarsson = son of Gunnar

Some people just name their kids without reserching for deep meanings and its significance

The annoying names I see becoming fluent lately is e.g Hephzibah, ask them where they got it from, they'll its from the bible, ask of her significance in the bible, I get no reply, this is a mother to a wicked kind of Israel, that's all, and they don't even know this, I mean, there are better names in the bible na,

Or is it Vashti, the disgraced queen before Queen Esther, ask them why give their daughter that name, reply is because it sounds nice, imagine angry
