@Okoroemeka, you have been a wonderful inspiration for many including myself. This thread is in itself a full course on cucumber farming, let's call it CU101. Thank you for your selflessness and sound guidance. I would like to know the outcome of the cucumber cultivation you did in furrows with drip irrigation at 20cm planting distance. Was it sustainable? Did you have any disease or ventilation issues? Kindly update Sir. |
Re: 500,000 Naira From One Plot Of Land In 90 Days. by okoroemeka(m): 9:47pm On Oct 16, 2020 |
nuel2good:what we found out is that planting crops at 30cm and excatly the spot the water is dropping reduces irrigation time to 20-30 mins per day and fuel bills,if you are using drip irrigation make sure to plant with the system on,so to plant close on the wetter area, surely we had running battles with all sorts of diseases with powdery mildrew also included, the furrow system is a great idea but the 20cm spacing is definitely not so smart 1 Like |

okoroemeka: Thanks for this wonderful observation. I'm guessing that same system with planting distance of 30cm might be advantageous. It will save on time ( no need calculating the distance to create planting holes), easier application of manure (as it will be applied in a straight line) and better water management (as the water will first flow in the furrow where the plants are). What do you think Sir? |

Hasib04:that will be typical weather problems, the weather pattern is changing with nightly rains and very hot day sun and high temperatures, green bean, cabbages ,pepper, eggplant, even cucumbers respond to low or increased temperatures, peppers may refuse to ripe or shed fruits due to low and cold temperatures, eggplant will definitely shed flowers and abort fruits due to high temperature, cabbage will bolt and refuse to form head due to high temperatures, the same with green bean it will take more time to produce flowers and even if flowers set,it can still shed it if temperatures continue to soar as expected, you have to be ready to water it if the top soil dries out and plan how to use palm fronds to shade out 40-50% of the light intensity to create a cooler micro climate. 1 Like |

From what I have seen, the cu986 flowers @ 3weeks, that's a week faster than Saira in most cases! I hope my Oga @safarifarm can update us on happenings over there....and good news to Saira F1 farmers in Akwa Ibom, the price of seeds has finally crashed and it's readily available at most shops within uyo metropolis, thus, before cu986 can convince us to abandon the cheaper Saira, it will have some serious miracles to perform. |

ideepaul:Good morning sir; please kindly help with the below review on Saira. (1) Please, is the Saira darker than CU999? (2) is it marketable in the East and West? (3) Can it really produce 10+ fruits as claimed? (4) is it a self pollinator like CU999 during during dry season? (5) how many fruits can fill chicken feed bag? (6) I thought dark green cucumber like morano and greego is more Acceptable in Calabar and port Harcourt? 1 Like |

Re: 500,000 Naira From One Plot Of Land In 90 Days. by ideepaul: 12:41pm On Oct 25, 2020 |
Idemujoseph:1) it's a light green cucumber unlike cu999, cu986 is the lighter version 2) I don't know about its marketability beyond the Akwa Ibom, cross river, and Rivers state 3)it produces more than 10 fruits if managed properly, though they are smaller compared to others 4)It's a self pollinating like cu999 5)It may take more than 120 fruits 6) Murano and greengo are not accepted at all around Akwa Ibom, don't know about Rivers state, even cu99 is not acceptable during the rainy season over here. 1 Like |

I know this is a cucumber thread but it must be expanded to accommodate other veggies instead of opening a new thread I have decided to share my tomato adventure to my fellow farmers so we will be properly guided we have grown different vegetables over the years but tomatoes has been a no go area for virtually every farmer in my location for reasons I can't tell,so now after digesting information from threads from jethro, obataobi, farmerakinloye ,jidestroud and others,we have taken the plunge and was assisted with Padma F1 seeds from cedaagrochemicals,it will be a test on 2-3 plots,if it works,a big IF,we will expand to an acre, 3 Likes 1 Share

fiddzy:stay tuned to the channel,we will dissect the cost and expenses to start up a tomato farm and we have our scales ready to weigh everything that comes out,so we can have a very clear picture of the Dynamics of tomato farming.also I have a feeling that a well managed tomato farm can rival a cucumber farm in terms of revenue generated considering the cost of tomatoes around my Axis, let's not jump to conclusions only time will tell. |
