byrron: Just imagine Africa was the US and Nigeria and Ethiopia- two of the largest States in the US of Africa and they always vote Democrats. It would mean automatically that like forever. They would be the States determining and voting only democrats into power. This automatically doesn't reflect everyone's Choice as the Republicans would be largely disenfranchised and there would be no America as of today. The founding fathers of the United States envisaged a beautiful idea with the Electoral college vote to counter this. Don't speak on something you don't understand the foundation of why it was set up. I think we should do something of same nature in Nigeria and avoid how the collosal failure called Buhari was popularly forced on every other tribe in Nigeria because of the size of the North and the West. 1 Like |

I will suggest Nigerian president be elected based on the number of senatorial district won by the candidates. Not this one where one state will produce unexplained 5 million votes. By use of senatorial district, it makes all states equal. We can even go by the numbers of federal constituencies won based on equity of land mass. The current electoral system in Nigeria does not make any sense. 1 Like 1 Share |

beauty7: By answering his question you've created a room for the opposite of the question: Why need for electoral college when majority of the states(electoral college voters) will still vote for the popular voted candidate? |

Trump will win. All that is happening now is just to expose the fraud and those behind it in the electoral system... Mind you, the Homeland Security put watermarks on valid ballots!!! So they can identify the valid ballots from the fake ones!! Trump is a genius for coming up with such an idea!!! Somewhere in Virginia, 100,000 votes belonging to Trump were discovered not to be counted. A lot would be revealed in the coming days but I'm sure Trump will win!!! 1 Like 1 Share |

Re: United States Electoral College Explained by Nobody: 9:30am On Nov 06, 2020 |
PervertProphet: The electoral college if implemented in Nigeria will still end up producing the likes of buhari by simply allocating more electoral college votes to northern states, that's all that needs to be done to achieve the same outcome happening in Nigeria at the moment even without an electoral college. |

Nigeria out of envy and greed copied a useless and self destruction electoral system from America not only that they even copied wrongly. |

shadeyinka: Your analogy turned out to be an own goal because the ignorant minority ended up choosing an ignorant majority (electoral college members) that went on to choose an ignorant president like Trump. The electoral college is now antiquated and should be consigned to the history books. It served its purpose then and is now outdated since it is a negation to the true definition of the word "Democracy" 2 Likes 1 Share |

Re: United States Electoral College Explained by henryobinna(m): 9:39am On Nov 06, 2020 |
Sunisonflex39:no, it's not like that. The OP didn't explain it well for you. For the majority of states(about 48 or so) the person who wins the popular votes automatically wins the state's total electoral votes. Also each state is allocated a certain number of electoral votes according to their representatives or population(something along that line). Do you know that Trump won many more states than Hillary? that's why he won the presidency. The electors cannot just go vote against the winner of the popular votes of their respective state. To be very frank the electoral college is a very good system that makes sure a few states do not continue to dictate who becomes the president over and over. 1 Like |

Just to win California, Florida and Texas you don land 100 plus electoral votes. It means with just 11 states out of 50 a candidate can win the US presidential election. |

Re: United States Electoral College Explained by Nobody: 9:45am On Nov 06, 2020 |
PervertProphet: This logic isn't tenable because, Trump lost California but still won other states like Florida and Texas and without an electoral college votes, the total votes of the people of Texas and Florida is larger than that of California which goes to show that every state vote matter's and having an electoral college is like beating around the bush to achieve the same purpose like winning an election by the highest number of the majority vote casted. 1 Like |

Re: United States Electoral College Explained by onlyfacts: 9:53am On Nov 06, 2020 |
dollarsplenty: Wrong, it isn't. The electoral college works on a state level and its a winner takes all kind of system. Take for example California, it has 55 electoral College votes. If a republican gets the highest number of votes in California, it means the electoral college of California will give all their electoral votes to the Republican presidential candidate which is 55. The Democratic candidate will only take the votes casts for him but nothing from the electoral college. So in this case above it is still the votes of the people that the electoral college works on. Overall a presidential candidate can still win the highest number of votes and lose at the electoral college. How is this possible? There are 52 states in the US, and all this states have different populations and different electoral college votes assigned to them. It's just like Nigeria, we have 36 states but they don't have the same population. Lagos, Kano, rivers etc have higher populations compared to the others, win this state with a great margin and you win the election in Nigeria. In America the objective is almost similar, win the states with the most electoral college votes by winning majority of the votes in that state. Even if those states are 22 states and combined they have electoral college votes of 270 which is needed to win the presidential election, it is more important than winning remaining 26 states that have electoral college votes combined less than 270. Now how each states are assigned electoral college votes is fair, so cheating is out of it. Each candidate knows what has to be done to get to 270 before election, and if they fail to meet it it's their fault. |

byrron:I haven't justified the application of the American electoral college. I have only justified it's purpose in selection of a leader. The objective question is: Is the majority always right? |
Re: United States Electoral College Explained by Neddyogu(m): 9:55am On Nov 06, 2020 |
ventuek: Cos all d states don't have similar population size and so it would be easy for contestants to conveniently ignore some states and concentrate their campaigns on states with high populations. It was originally meant to give all Americans a sense of participation in choosing their president. But with time, the whole idea seems fvcked. |
Re: United States Electoral College Explained by Jaykrown: 9:55am On Nov 06, 2020 |
But please, I have a question to ask.. If the electoral college has the final say to elect the president, then, what’s the essence of people going out to vote when their votes will not determine who wins at end of the day? Can’t they just use the votes of 538 electoral college members and save people the stress, or is there something am missing? |
