The Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano, may ban tricycle (Keke NAPEP) operators in the state.

This, our correspondent, gathered was as a result of the rise in crime allegedly associated with the operators.

It was gathered that within a week, no fewer than 12 persons were killed in Awka, the state capital, in cult-related activities attributed to Keke NAPEP operators.

A government source said, “The governor is thinking about banning Keke NAPEP operation in Awka because of security reports linking them with cult activities. In their place, shuttle buses will be provided for commuters.”

The state government on Wednesday held a meeting at the Alex Ekwueme Square with Keke operators in Awka, where it expressed concern over the rising cases of crime perpetuated by tricycle operators .

The Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Solo Chukwulobelu, said, “Security reports recieved over the last few weeks indicated that tricycles were also used to commit crime, including kidnapping, shooting, pilfering, among others.

“If you fail to identify the bad eggs among you, the government will have no other alternative but to ban the operation of tricycle in the state.”

Anambra State Police Command Launches Rapid Response Squad To Curb Crime And Criminality In The State This Yuletide.

Anambra state Police Command has today being the 12th of November, 2020, launched Rapid Response Squad to fight crime and Criminality in the state during and after the Yuletide period.

The team are to patrol round streets of Anambra throughout the Yuletide season and after, to ensure full protection of life and properties of the citizenry.

Officers and men of the Anambra state Police Command kicked -off the patrol exercise with township patrol led by the Commissioner of Police, Mr John Abang represented by the Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Haruna Muhammed, to create awareness on the exercise and also remind criminal elements that they have no place in the state.

During the township patrol exercise, the team which kicked off at the Police Headquarters in Amawbia passed through Eke Awka market, Agu-Awka, Unizik junction, Amawbia bypass junction, Amawbia round about by Onitsha old road, among other strategic points.

The Anambra state Governor, Chief Willie Obiano had earlier today flagged -off the patrol squad where he donated thirteen security vehicles to the state Police Command effective security network in the state during and after this Christmas period.

The vehicle donated by the governor are three Innoson Ikenga jeep, and ten hilux trucks.

The free for all licensing of Keke by their union is why now they have entered into crime and all sorts. There are now well over 10,000 Keke operating in small Awka causing chaos and mayhem. Replace them with shuttle bus and exactly the same scenario will repeat itself.

Government should license one third of present number of Keke to operate only within restricted zones named and numbered A 1-1000, B 1-000, C 1-1000. Their drivers must present identification, present name and contact of landlord and must be over the age of 30 years. This would get rid of all the young criminally minded Keke operators particularly from Ebonyi who fill the police cells in Awka.
