seankafor: Good question considering how Owerri is saturated with a lot of hotels...and with new ones springing up almost on a monthly basis! Imo State IGR is a joke -to put it mildly- and this has mainly to do with the ineffective, distracted and comedic governance they’ve been unfortunate to be saddled with! When they want to vote in a more serious and thorough gov’t, the bastards that have said Ndigbo will not progress will use the Supreme Court to overturn the will of the people! The same person that truncated Dee Sam Mbakwes’ result-driven gov’t more than thirty years ago is still around today to cause them more grief in 2020! 1 Like 1 Share |

XANDERO85: Hotels saturate Owerri, why? Because of the about 300,000 students jam packed in Owerri in all the universities and polys in Imo state restricted to Owerri area. Rochas Okorocha government started to build what it called new site for Imo state university in Ogboko to lower the level of prostitution in Owerri. Those who profit from the prostitution business colluded with profiteering local landlords and opposed Okorocha’s intention. Yet Okorocha government continued to build the university. Ihedioha government committee pronounced the university as wholly IMSG owned. Okorocha never raised any objection to the committee findings. But governor Hope Uzodinma is political foe of Okorocha. New Hotels emerge in Owerri - to the delight of those profiting from prostitution of our young students jam packed in Owerri. 1 Like 2 Shares |

iboboyswag:Thanks for recognizing my plight. People from Orlu zone have never had the advantages in closeness to multi faculty government university like people in Owerri zone have had for nearly a century. So, few other people like me from Orlu area who are able to see the ugly development trend in Imo state hardly creep up to ask for what I ask IMSG - the most basic things govt must provide in Orlu area - the basic things IMSG have been providing in double or triplicate in Owerri area. 2 Likes 1 Share |

iboboyswag: Failure of followership as well. Imo is touted to be the state with the highest rate of higher education in the SE. But Imo people sink water boreholes for domestic water supply, perhaps happy over that, they will never ask their governors to provide treated public water supply system. Imo people watch the state urban development process get reduced to become affair of Ekeonumwa, Douglas, Wethrel and few other urban things in Owerri. Rest of the state in decadence. Imo people can’t say no, why do you governors leave the rest of the state outside Owerri to decay? Imo people watch Owerri zone covet all 6 government universities and polytechnics in Imo state, mass education in the area due to closeness to multi faculty government universities and polytechnics, profit from the institutions, while nothing goes to Orlu and Okigwe areas. Imo people keep quiet over the dangerous imbalance in rate of education between Owerri zone against rest of the state. So imo state problems are followership problems, mainly. 1 Like |

FLAGSHIP PROJECT FOR THE URBAN RENEWAL OF OWERRI - BEAUTIFICATION, TRAFFIC DECONGESTION AND ECONOMIC PROLIFERATION The quest for the resolution of Owerri traffic congestion remains an ultimate search, not necessarily because of the accolades awaiting the initiator and executioner of such success but, due to the beautification of the Eastern heartland and improved socioeconomic activities in the state. No doubt, Owerri is next destination zone for tourism and social life domiciliation however, this beautiful city of tranquil has been deprived of her status and abandoned of patronage, even deserted by her own, simply because of the social vices emanating from traffic congestion, street trading and general disorderliness on the streets of Owerri. By her strategic position within the south eastern region (connecting two major commercial cities of Onitsha and Aba) and her economic importance to the state, there became an urgent need for an burban renewal project which has been conceived and flagged off by the Shared Prosperity administration of His Excellency the Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodimma. This Urban Renewal project would be handled by a prestigious indigenous company "PLANET PROJECT" - highly reputed by their monumental signature projects accros the city of Lagos State such as: Victoria Island - Lekki Traffic Circulation Project; Lekki Junction Improvement Works; Ikeja Bus Terminal; Oshodi Transport Interchange, etc. Interestingly, PLANET PROJECT's engagement was facilitated by the Imo State Lagos Liaison Officer, Dr. Chidi Uzoma - bringing developmental tidings home. It is amazing how every sector of government is operational and optimal under the leadership of His Excellency the Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodimma. Liason offices are no longer just for the entertainment of the Governor of the state when he is in town, but has engaged in liaising and standing in the gap for the State Government whenever necessary. The painstaking exercise of studying and identifying flashpoints with conspicuous traffic gridlock, successfully yielded lasting solutions with dual purpose (beautification and traffic decongestion). Apart from the Junction Improvement Works (JIW), the neighborhood market would proffer lasting solution in eradicating street trading and hawking which has hitherto led to traffic gridlock, aiding social vices and halted economic growth beyond a certain index. Another major aspect of this Urban Renewal project which is expected to come in other phases, is the building of a Central Bus Terminal (with subs at Egbu, Control and Naze) and incorporation of lay-bys along the major roads. These would adequately address vehicular movement and flow within the state capital, thereby leading to a geometric improvement on economic activities. This initiative of the Shared Prosperity administration of His Excellency the Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodimma, is a flagship project centered on decongestion of traffic while improving on ease of doing business within the state. #The3RGovernment #GovernmentofSharedProsperity #HopeNewAndElectronicMediaCenter What's your take on this guys, my own is walkways and drains coverage is sacrosanct. 4 Likes

BastardWike: In what way, please? Beyond oil, Port Harcourt is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean That's why Onne has a port and related service firms, contributing significantly to the state's IGR There are many factors that give Rivers State an edge BTW, 2023 is still a long way; I despise party politics. Hope can still prove his mettle. PDP has never worked in Imo State. |

SmartPolician: You only confused yourself. Is Onne part of P.H or Rivers State? I'm talking about Owerri against P.H and you're talking about Rivers State. What do you mean by P.H is surrounded by Atlantic ocean? Is Abuja or Kaduna surrounded by Atlantic ocean too? Has it stopped them developing fast? There are several factors that help to make a city to develop fast aside having a port or huge allocations. P.H is a volatile region many people avoid in investing in, except when it's very crucial. Secondly, the swampy nature of the terrain makes it difficult and more expensive to build or develope structures. How developed is P.H despite all the humongous allocations, oil activities and port? How rich is Ebonyi State? What's their federal allocations? How significant is their IGR? Has any of this shortcomings stopped Umahi from developing the state?? 1 Like |

sanctity454: There is a reason why roundabouts are used to control traffic at major road junctions in 3rd world countries more than traffic lights. ~` LACK OF CONSTANT ELECTRICITY ! Roundabouts don't need electricity to function and traffic will always move as long as people obey a simple rule~ Yield for traffic on your RIGHT Side! If we remove these roundabouts and put normal T-junctions with traffic light or Police who will not be there every hour of the day or traffic lights that will break down after 3 months, we are courting trouble. The traffic that will develop as a result of failure of traffic lights will be out of this world. That is why i always prefer roundabouts to be made bigger to solve traffic problems, not removed totally. Or you build a flyover on that junction and solve the problem permanently. 4 Likes |

SmartPolician: What is the point of being on the atlantic if you're not a seafaring people? Or having oil if you don't know how to refine or even mine it? It's like having a car and not knowing how to drive. So in this respect, PH can be easily surpassed and by all indications has probably been surpassed. It's primary assets are unusable by it's people and like other cities on the coast (Warri, Onne, Calabar etc), they dont' have the ability to make use of what they have so in essence they don't have these things. Even Lagos in this respect can be surpassed by inland cities. Access to the ocean isn't about having a means to import people's goods. It's about having a means to send your goods across the world, and places like Aba and Onitsha are trying to do that, where as I can't name anything that is produced in PH. Only consumption and services. 2 Likes |

Also, lets refrain from measuring an economy by 'IGR'. IGR is a measure of taxation, not economic activity. If we bring this ignorant trend to Imo, governors will compete to tax people at higher and higher rates until life is unbearable for normal people. Many of you don't own property but you will one day and when you do you will know what I'm saying. Using IGR as a metric is for people that live with their fathers. 2 Likes |

Grgton: Hope is very confused. I wish this man will not continue beyond 2023. When I saw the caption, Urban renewal, I thought he is going to take it to suburbs around Owerri and also extend it to Orlu and Okigwe. There's nothing Urban renewal in this movement apart from destruction of the existing beautiful roundabouts and introduce whatever he thinks is ok. Imo should go beyond this type of politics it's pissing. What is wrong in creating more new cities like new Owerri phase II or another layout in Owerri? Government should be for continuity not for all round overhaul. Destroying existing things to build new ones on the same space is wrong. And also abandoning a project of previous administration and start a similar project is totally wrong. If Imo continues like this in time to come the state will look horrible due to abandoned projects, waste of funds, lack of progress and expansion. I have seen a case where Hope demolished an existing hospital to build a mall on the same space, demolished a tunnel instead of reinforcement which the demolition is still ongoing for several months despite the claim that the tunnel was not strong. All these are waste of Imo state limited fund. If Hope goes down tomorrow another person that will take over from him might start demolishing his malls to build hospitals on the same space and claim that it was hospitals that were there but demolished by Hope, he might equally destroy the roads and return the roundabouts with the claim that the roundabouts were the initial plans. Hope should be called to order. Imo state government is not his birthright, it's something Imolites asked him to hold for them just for a while soon they will collect it back from him and give it to another person. He can't stay there forever. 1 Like |

Owerri urban renewal of Ohakim and Okorocha - endless song. For only one person in Orlu who the three governors of Imo state from Orlu and Okigwe zones see as political enemy in Orlu Municipal Lga, they have been sinking all the urban development funds of Imo state into Owerri soil since 2007. One builds in Owerri, the other demolishes. They made urban development of Ekeonumwa and environs to become urban development of Imo state. Just because of one enemy in Orlu, they punish hundreds of thousands of residents in Orlu. Cruelty: after rebuilding urban roads demolished and rebuilt by Okorocha in Owerri, it’s now demolish and build traffic circles. This one cannot even rebuild ONE CENTIMETER of road in Orlu since January 14. Tufiakwa. Politicians shooting themselves on their feet because of one perceived political enemy. 1 Like |

GOVERNOR HOPE UZODIMMA'S STRATEGIC ENGAGEMENTS WITH THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT YEILDS INFRASTRUCTURAL DIVIDENDS. As against the back drop of ceremonious claims on association with the Federal Government by the previous administrations of Imo State, the Shared Prosperity administration of His Excellency the Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodimma has fruitfully been engaging with the Federal Government for visibility in Imo State, project-wise. The latest to the records being the Federal Executive Council (FEC) approval of N16.7B for the total rehabilitation of Ihiala-Orlu-Nkwerre-Umuduru road. This landmark achievement of the shared prosperity government is coming barely a year into his administration and this project, indeed, stands conspicuously as one of the major FG road projects in Imo state since 2010. Recall that, His Excellency the Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodimma has constantly made it known that his affiliation and association with the Federal Government would yield fruitfulness to the State. Governor Hope Uzodimma is also in touch with the Federal Government on improved speed for the ongoing work on Aba-Owerri road and other FG projects within the state. Worthy appreciation to the Federal Government for this monumental project. His Excellency the Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodimma would continue to attract FG visibility in the state for improved development. #HopeNewAndElectronicMediaCenter

kikake:Don't blame it on the students.Their are cities in Nigeria with more institutions of higher learning than owerri, yet you don't see hotels/prostitutes everywhere. Imo state government (past and present)hasn't made any conscious effort to industrialize . imo lies between onitsha and aba (two industrial power houses in the East) yet they don't attract tangible Fdi-even though it has better public infrastructure than at least Aba. XANDERO85: absolutely, and it only takes 1 reasonable governor (which neither state can produce) at patch that up. After that governor, god help you if you were one of the people that created a culture of measuring wealth with IGR. Nigerians already started measuring wealth with overpasses and now look at the ridiculous race to have more overpasses than my neighbor that governors are engaged in. Lets us factories if we must pick an inaccurate metric to obsess on. IGR is not one of them. There have been talks about how past and present Imo governors have developed only Owerri in detriment to Orlu and Okigwe. While that is true, it's not only peculiar to Imo state. it is a Nigerian problem. The issue is just that even the Owerri that they have focused on doesn't have much to show for it. The city currently has some of the worst roads in Nigeria even though some of these roads were done not to long ago. So, the problem here in lack of quality infrastructure rather than the lack of it. That's why sometimes, it's difficult to rate Rochas's tenure as governor because even though he built a lot of things, they were substandard and fell apart as soon as they were built. It is also pertinent to note that throughout the country, apart from Lagos owing to it's conurbation attribute, most states do not do much outside the state capital. Why do you think we keep complaining about how bad the roads are in Aba? It;s simply because it's not the capital of Abia state. If it was an Abia problem then Umuahia roads would have been just as bad as that of Aba but governors try to make the state capital look decent since that where they will be receiving visitors from. 4 Likes 1 Share |

Afam4eva: The sex trade is a major part of life in owerri. yes a part of it is the moral decadence worldwide, but we can't excuse it's inhabitants of their faults. The kind of things I experienced in owerri during my service (NYSC) last year, made me understand that something is fundamentally wrong in that society. They have to seriously look into the private and public educational structure in that city. 1 Like |

OruExpress: The greatest asset any government can bestow on its citizens isn't necessarily asthetic infrastructure (flyovers and very wide roads), but economic infrastructure (gas facilities, airports, industrial estates, power stations, industries ,modern markets etc). And them people empowerment. We would be better off as an ethnic group if over leaders invest heavily in the manpower within the region-giving us technical skills that are comparative with what is available in the developed nations |
Re: Few Pics From Imo State by OreMI22: 8:29pm On Dec 03, 2020 |
Although i really didn't like Rochas for his penchant for low quality roads, truth is that he had practical vision for Imo state. Rochas had a technical mind on what was feasible or what was needed to achieve his vision for Imo state. Albeit, his urge to cut corners always made him settle for low quality construction. However from the looks of it, Hope Uzodinma has ZERO idea about how to develop Imo state. He also does not have a technical mind, thus really embarks on silly unworkable projects just to appear as though he was doing something. I have been looking at his plan to demolish all roundabouts and replace them with 4 way-Junctions and i wonder why he hadn't noticed that the British knew we needed stable, constant electricity to power traffic lights to operate a system of 4 way intersections, than roundabouts which could function efficiently without electricity. Countries without constant electricity cannot operate the 4 way intersections else it would be totally chaotic and impossible to pass those junctions even in places with the most patient drivers. The same man bulldozing all roundabouts in Owerri as an "urban renewal plan" has no plans to improve electricity supply in the city to ensure his traffic lights would work 24 hours of the day and forestall traffic jams that result when traffic lights fail. He bulldozed the tunnels without going ahead to construct proper flyovers at those spots to add value to what the tunnel was supposed to do. The same bulldozing mindset was why he pulled down a N1.6 billion naira building called Somto Hospital. If that building could not be used as a hospital, it could be used as a vocational training center for youths/artisans, a school for handicap, an indoor computer or phone market, or even a police station with some rooms converted to jails. Why would a poor state in Africa pull down buildings that could be used or donated for other uses? It is becoming clear that Hope does not have any plans whatsoever to develop Imo state. All he wants to do is to blame the previous Governors for this or that, then continue to demolish this and that just to buttress his point, without adding any value to the state. 3 Likes

Re: Few Pics From Imo State by OruExpress: 7:35am On Dec 04, 2020 |
eduj: flyovers are unbelievably ugly and the countries building them are reconsidering because they don't help traffic. They are new to Nigerians and we think it's fancy so we'll over do it, but they fell out of vogue in the west in the 1960s. We are new to development and we have a chance to avoid mistakes but our self esteem and vision is too limited to think outside of the box or apply logic or even research to our blind mimicry. Everything else you listed (airports, industrial estates etc) are private ventures. Overpasses do nothing. That's what you should think about when you want to build. How does this benefit people? An overpass will stop someone from waiting for traffic to pass for 30 seconds. Is that worth the money? |
