Banks are generally crazy in this country, they can decide to close your account without giving a valid reason. Most of the time they rely on automated alerts which could trigger the closure.
This is how they coined computer says No.
Right, I think it is in their terms and conditions not to say why.

But they ought to have notified the owner about the closure.

You mean in Nigeria ?.
Only people i know that have their account closed were people who used the account to receive or send fraud money. .......
Your account cannot be closed for no reason without any explanation to the fact.....

Are Uk banks racist? grin

Says who...

mine was closed with no reason. I definitely have never done anything fraudulent neither was it even an account used frequently so it was hardly used to receive or send fraud money ....

its always easy to think it doesnt happen until it happens to you

Nothing is done without a reason.
Police won’t arrest you without telling you why...
Immigration won’t stop you at airport without a reason.
My accounts or any of my extended family haven’t been closed before so I’ll beg to disagree

Exactly my point in bold smiley .... you cant really speak of what you have no experience off

Nothing done without a reason for sure, but whether they disclose it to you is another matter. Only an inside truly knows what criteria they use in closing some accounts . Some could even be accidentally closed if it done by a program which can have bugs once in à while

One of my projects was an IT migration (although not bank related ) and during a process, several customer accounts were closed accidentally, some were caught and immediately reversed but not all. In that case those that were closed accidentally without reversing will just wake up to see their account are closed.

I am not sure a UK bank will close an account without any reason. The reason might be stupid and unjust tho. The best way to mitigate it is to have a minimum of 2 bank accounts so that one won't be stranded. Because in most cases, funds are refunded.

Yes I can ... read this if your account was closed and know the appropriate actions go take ...

In UK mate, as braket said they don't have to justify the closure. Most of the time, they will give you notification except when there is clear evidence of fraud

This is why I am an advocate of multiple accounts.

BTW, my favorite bank Starling won the best UK bank based on survey conducted by Which. Running away from erico2k2 now.

And your link said exactly this

A bank does not have to explain why it is closing a customer's account, although in most cases banks follow good practice and give a reason.

Is that the summary or the link ?

If you feel your account was closed unjustly there’s a form there for you to fill and the banks ombudsman will help you..

Absolutely no more. I went to the bank and they said they are unable to discuss it that they are no longer able to offer me banking services.

Read a few things about it on the internet and it looks like some form of profiling . The account has been operated with just small normal cash.

It’s a current account.

My wife’s account was closed with same message and she hadn’t even started depositing money in the account yet...

HSBC has been ok for me and Monzo but i wanted to be sure it’s not a general thing especially with Monzo cos I love the ease of banking Monzo offers...

Lexusgs430:

More to this story..... Banks does not shut an account for no reason.......

- What type of account did you open?
- How was your account operated?
- How was cash flowing through your account?
- Any suspicious activities?
- Identity crises
Etc etc etc

Get a credit report, hopefully they have updated it.... Other banks would negatively view this closure, as a red flag....... Best to resolve it, before you move on, or attempt to move on..... Your new bank too can close your new account (when they eventually find out) ......
