He only made sense to an extent and then jumped right into outright bullshit. He knows this but still hellbent on producing more dangerous graduates.... Of course he needs the fees at all cost.

Sound like the average Nigerian politician... All they do is condemn the youths that they ve given nothing to... Absolutely nothing but more misery and uncertainty but re quick to blame them for everything else. When the foundation is faulty how then do you blame to blocks for not standing straight

There are graduates who do not know the difference between Tropics of Cancer and Tropics of Capricorn. There are those who do not know Magellan line, that is, the line that divides the earth into two.

The journalist who wrote this is one of the 'dangerous graduates'.

The Prof. probably said Imaginary line(s)(e.g. Tropics of Capricorn, Cancer, Equator etc), but Mr. journalist went ahead to write down 'Magellan line' in his notepad.

English proficiency isn't education. It is just one out of many languages.
If you aren't a journalist, editor or English language

Exactly..

Skills needed in the modern world has little need for proficiency in English, geography, astronomy.

Technical/IT skills are more relevant and you can be great at those without English.

We have graduates who do not know the place and import of prepositions in grammar; graduates who do not know the use of adjectives and adverbs; graduates who do not know the place of agreement of nouns and number; graduates who do not know the import of adjectival and adverbial clauses

And does knowing all these make a better graduate?

I don't agree with everything he said, but I must concede that our universities are churning out semi-literates with very low intelligence as graduates these days... So many of them are already all over politics and romance sections.

While I don't expect every graduate to be well versed in grammar or geography, as he emphasized above. Still, a graduate ought to know the basics of almost all these. He should be able to express himself fluently in the common National language... These days, that's way too much to ask of even Masters degree holders.

I won't put the blame solely at the feet of our lecturers (Though some are quite unqualified to lecture a soul). Basic/foundational education for most Nigerian graduates is either half-baked or grossly less than average. I am talking about basic primary to secondary school education.
Forget all these grades and scores in WAEC and JAMB (A lot of them are purchased)... How many of our young people in Universities obtained quality, complete and thorough basic education??! Trace this carefully, and you will see the genesis of the rubbish graduates sneaking out of universities with bachelor degrees.

English is just a language and not a measure for intelligence. What we should be concerned about is why we have faculties of engineering in our Universities, yet, give every single contract of any meaningful construction to the Chinese or Berger

Half-truth. While I agree that we have some terribly poor graduates, many are not as bad as he has painted. Primary and Secondary school education are the most important and critical levels of education. Because the foundations at these levels are very faulty, there's little that can be corrected at the University level. Especially with the level of examinations malpractices that go on in WAEC, NECO and JAMB exams, there's little the Universities can do. University education anywhere in the world is hinged on independent study with the lecturers being facilitators of knowledge. It is not the duty of an Engineering Thermodynamics lecturer to teach his students how to write letters. The truth is that Universities are not meant for everyone. That's why we have technical colleges, Polytechnics and Colleges of education. But in Nigeria everyone wants to be called a university graduate. A 300 level student wrote a formal letter and didn't even know where to sign.
Various stakeholders in the education sector share their own part of the blame. We need to de-emphasize on certificates and focus more on capacity.

Blames... Blames... Blames... Wake up to the reality of today sir.

Education, good education is even far more accessible now than it was then. How??! The internet.

Instead of young people to maximize the internet and sundry resources to better their intellect, they rather pursue nefarious and mundane things.

Yes, our elders messed up with respect to building good legacies, but how well have your peers pushed to break barriers of ignorance?!! Everything good can never come easy.

Is every graduate an English or geography major? undecided

Because I am not aware of the trivial details of a field I did not specialise in does that make me as dangerous as someone who will kill another over 1,500 naira or terrorise a village with theft, rape and robbery?

I am really not seeing his point, inasmuch as the state of publicly funded Higher Education is sub par having some knowledge and being somewhat useful is better than having no knowledge and being totally useless.
