I believe you know what I am talking about and you know it had nothing to do with equipment.
It had to do with it’s struggles to contain the Islamists insurgency where they ( Islamists) committed Deadly massacres every Night and The Algerian Army/Airforce at the time struggled to reform/reorganize itself from the conventional to the unorthodox / Counterterrorism Forces they are today.
My point is I believe it took 3 HOS . The one who ironically would have the most impact was a Civilian I.E. had no Military background .
Glad We are not arguing that Algeria is one of the strongest Militaries in Africa Today.

yes fighting against your own population insurgency is not easy , conventionnal army strategy and equipments are useless . even mighty US struggled to stop taliban in afghanistan or insurgency in Irak .

for algeria terrorism and insurgency in 90's beguining 2000's. it was a dirty war . 150.000 to 200.000 killed . beside rising rural militias to fight for there towns , the infiltration of terrorist groups by the secret services, there is even reports about secret service agents committing atrocious crimes against population disguised to discredit islamists.

and to finish , the final blow came from politics with Charter for Peace and National Reconciliation , that bring closure to the Algerian Civil War by offering an amnesty for most violence committed in it. a lot of insurgent , terrorists laid down their arms and returned to civilian life. also an economic strategy to develop poor regions where terrorists were recruting there people . after that, only the hard core of terrorists remained, and it had become easier to crush them after .

Reasonable counter-insurgency strategy for Nigeria to learn from...... We can never win this war with force, we have to use diplomacy and economy too. Many in the various IDP camps are BH in formats and sympathizers and for most of them, it is because of the little economic benefits they derive from it. Same thing with the Northwest, we've abandoned the rural areas for far too long. It is time we give local governments autonomy and remove the dependent on state government so that governance can reach the locals.

There are some things that Nigeria has to learn from the PAINFUL LESSONS of ALGERIA
1) It takes time to End an insurgency ( YEARS)
2) With Gritted Teeth The highly controversial Amnesty program for low level BH SOLDIERS must continue there has to be a way out for those who want to surrender in return for crucial INTEL
3) Nigeria's next PRESIDENT will most likely will not have a MILITARY background ( GOOD cool . They tend to buy better MILITARY EQUIPMENT and not penny pinch same thing happened in ALGERIA , same thing will happen in NIGERIA
4) Algeria developed her MILITARY INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX that is sanctions burst proof , No permanent enemies ,no permanent friends that is why you will see a US Warship pay her a visit followed by a Russian Warship ( Pragmatic)
5) It can now be considered a security risk not to :
A) Develop rural areas
B) Not offer Quality FREE EDUCATION to poor Girls and Boys up to High school completion. and then Vocational training.

Nigerian made self propelled artillery systems.

Or better categorized as Nigerian modified artillery systems, all based on the 105mm artillery.

Now these are the sort of pictures that can give me a boner for 3 straight weeks, no jokes. grin grin grin
less impressed with the purchase of equipment,
more impressed with fabrications, modifications and in-house integration of systems to meet the need of the troops on ground.
NAF, NN, NA are seriously kicking private military industry butt when it comes to production of military equipment.
One wonders what's holding private military industry back, but a few like proforce, Epenal etc.
Yes, Initial purchase of a few units are necessary to understand the workings of modern equipment, but
afterwards, the rest units must be assembled locally, I repeat MUST. Nigeria cannot afford to procure all it needs from other countries, this would be suicidal, as we should have learnt from the very early Jaguar escapades.
Private military industry must continue to showcase their prowess by constructing what the Military needs but don't currently have, this is the only way they would be taken seriously and joint ventured with. Why is private industry afraid of dabbling into the manufacture of prototype military equipment. Yes to get into full fledge assembly of military equipment will require major paperwork and permissions from DSS and such. But, not prototypes, matter of fact, a company is more likely to be granted permissions after the delivery of a working prototype.
