How Do I Approach My Landlord To Withdraw The Increment In Rent? by iko123: 2:48pm On Jan 05, 2021 |
Most tenants renew their rents at the beginning of the year. Based on my tenancy agreement,I renewed my rent early than expected because I had a lot of activities lined up for the year that will require money. Besides, I don't want landlord to remind me that my rent has expired. In previous years, I renewed my rent on the second week of the beginning of the month so that I don't send a signal of abundance on my side. Sometimes, I pay in arrears even when the money is there. I was surprised that after making the payment, I got a notification of increment of rent effective from January, 2022. My family has been very peaceful tenant since we parked in. I have thought through the notice to find the best way to approach him to withdraw the increment without him giving me an option to park out if I am not comfortable. Please advise me on the best approach to use in this situation. 3 Likes |

Well...the rent increase is expected, bearing in mind the times we're in. However, he should have given notice of the proposed increase around September/October last year, instead of waiting till January. You may not succeed in getting him cancel the increment. Two options I see here: 1) Ask him for more time to pay up the balance. Since you've been paying your rent on time, I guess he'll oblige. 2) You can calculate the number of months the amount you've already paid will cover, based on the new rent. Once it elapses, you pack out. However, you should discuss this with him, to be sure both of you are on the same page. 3) Well, you may still ask go ahead and ask him to hold off with the increment, but I guess he also increased the rent for everybody, not just for you. Whether he'll grant your request or not, I can't tell. But you have to discuss maturely with him 48 Likes 1 Share |

The best way to approach him to discuss your rent increment is by getting a bottle of wine,a fertile female goat,a Rolex watch and don't forget to go along with the land receipt of the 50/50 plot of land you just acquired showed them to him and tell him to go to hell. 33 Likes 2 Shares |

If you delay your rent payment by just 1 day after expiry, you have breached your rental contract. Landlords love tenants who pay for another year BEFORE or ON expiry of the present one. Call your landlord and politely request to see him. Thank him for accommodating you and proceed to explain to him why the proposed rent increase of 2022 is not agreeable to you. Make a counter proposal : - A cancellation of the proposed increase. - A reduction of the increase. - A postponement of the increase to 2023 Tell him if the increase was due to your previous delayed payments, it will not happen again. Listen to his claimed reasons for increment and try and counter with reasonable argument why he shouldn't. Yet. Be polite. If you are persuasive enough. He might suspend or reduce the increase. (Go with someone as a witness since he might not be willing to write another letter cancelling the increment letter) If all three options are rejected by him, you would have to pay the increase or seek alternative accommodation. Good luck. 44 Likes 2 Shares |

Some landlords are of the devil. With all the predicament facing someone, increasing house rent is what they feel they can add to the already filled plate? My landlord is A VERY GOOD MAN. He has a lovely wife and they are VERY considerate. Who said an Igbo landlord isn’t good? I would gladly have him as a landlord till i leave this shithole. Sometimes, it’s not always about money.. But doing right by a fellow human. Some of this landlords push young men into stealing and illegalities to stay afloat. Which shouldn’t be so. Your property isn’t a license to senselessly extort. Your children will one day need to pay rent 23 Likes 1 Share |

You landlord is a seer. He has seen a vision that your income will increase beyond your imagination in the 3rd quarter of this year and Nigerians will get a ratified minimum wage of 100k per month in the last quarter of this year. Be glad OP! 1 Like |

I do not know how much your rent is, but no landlord has any right to unilaterally review rent without informing you ahead and having due consultation with his tenants. If your rent figure is in the high range my brother sit him down and let him know you deserved some notification but you do not wish to be a troublesome tenant and therefore would require a little reduction in the amount from what it has been increased to. If he refuses, you either pay him or sue him! |
