1st thing go to a reputable shop or verifiable seller. And if Ure not familiar with iPhones get familiar with necessary self checks tho a reputable seller or shop will also put u through on necessary infos on any fone.

Compare two iPhones of same model to see if they haven’t changed the screen before, if you want to enjoy the iPhone graphics

1.Factory Unlock vs Chip Unlock: A Factory Unlocked iPhone is better. If you remove a sim card from a Chip Unlocked iPhone, you’ve rendered that part useless. Quite risky.

2.Availability of Face ID: I don’t know what these guys are doing, but a lot of used iPhones don’t have Face ID.

3. Presence of iCloud or any trace of another account: If you are buying a used iPhone, it must be completely cleared. As in, even if they’ve cleared it and it looks all good, tell the seller that you want him to reset it again, in your presence. It might still be connected to the initial owner’s iCloud devices, and a reset will prompt you to provide the owner’s details.
Some iPhones have also been blacklisted as stolen
In their presence, you should also put in your own iCloud details, to prevent story in the future.

4. Battery health: You can check the maximum percentage of the battery remaining. If you’re going to buy a small iPhone e.g iPhone 7/8, make sure the battery is as strong as possible (90%+). If you’re buying and 8 Plus, or X and above, you can be a little bit lenient, but still go for as good as possible battery life.

5. Scratches/ Cracks on the body and screen: This is subject to your own discretion.

6. Check if the phone is locked to a particular carrier. Put your own sim in the phone in the presence of the seller and make sure it works properly.

I think the most important thing is to clean iPhone safely to secure your privacy. It's a good choice for you to use some iPhone data wipe tools.
Here I strongly recommend Apeaksoft iphone eraser. It securely erase all data on your iPhone/iPad/iPod, including contacts, SMS, account information, photos, browser history, videos, songs, games, weather, notes, mails, apps, voice memos, calendars, Apple Maps, Reminders, voicemails, downloads, etc. Moreover, settings made on your device will also be clean to get a "new" device. wink
