Isn't this criminalization of free speech and tech giants being partisan in this regard because for years now some leaders have been making statements dangerous for peace but they didn't take decisive actions against them? The action taken by the tech giants are Orwellian in nature, it has set a dangerous precedent in the sense that countries with capacity but reluctant to build their platforms will now go ahead to build one and force citizens to sign up. Also, allowing tech giants to unilaterally decide what's right and what's wrong is dangerous for civil conversation because once they don't agree with you even if what you're saying is the truth they will remove your content and suspend your account.

What the left did in the post-election period is not the same thing as what Trump did, and I don’t think it is comparable.

Trump essentially instigated a populist coup. He invited his followers to the capital with the objective of subverting the democratic process and halting the handover of government extrajudicially.

He had also previously set the tone for the whole situation by being divisive and using social media as a propaganda tool to spread hate and misinformation.

What he did has more similarity to what the Nazis did in the period before Kristallnacht. There is a difference between merely having different political views or holding a different political position AND actively encouraging a mob to interfere with a democratic handover of power.

Now whether Twitter and Facebook should have such censorial power is a different debate. But let’s not minimise Trump’s actions by comparing it to anything the left or indeed the right did after the elections.

We have a responsibility to protect the platform from outside interference, and to make sure that when people pay us for political ads we make it as transparent as possible. But it is not our role to intervene when politicians speak.
