Hundreds of civilians have fled their homes in Marte, a community in Borno State, after suspected Boko Haram insurgents attacked a military base and raze down public buildings in the fringes of Lake Chad Basin, sources said.

It was learnt that the terrorists in their hundreds stormed the recently resettled community in the northern part of the state on Friday evening, shooting from all angles and forcing returnees to flee into the bushes.

An official of the Borno State Government told our correspondent that there was a gun battle between troops and insurgents for hours at Marte town on Friday evening.

He added that hundreds of civilians slept in the bushes and trekked throughout the night but have started arriving Dikwa town, which is about 25 kilometers away.

“It was a disturbing news. We got the sad news last night around 8:pm that the troops have been engaging the insurgents for hours.

“As I am speaking to you, hundreds of returnees fled their homes and are taking refuge in Dikwa.

“The troops have displayed gallantry but the insurgents came in hundreds, according to information we received.

“Our prayers are with the troops,” the source disclosed.

A security source also revealed that the insurgents attacked military formations.

The source further stressed that, this morning, there was a reinforcement from Dikwa which engaged the outlawed group but the details are not available as of the time of filling this report.

However, unconfirmed reports stated that insurgents may have overran Marte last night.

It would be recalled that on 1st December, 2020 the State resettled 500 households, comprising 2,870 returnees after six years in exile.

After my own research, it seems ISWAP gave the Nigerian army a bloody nose in Marte, the soldiers had to retreat to dikwa and call for air support.

After little research, I found out there is an army battalion and an army brigade in Marte. We are talking of nothing less than 2000 soldiers shocked

Thousands of soldiers were overpowered by hundreds of terrorists and some people dey talk about one useless ambush for here... Nah wah o.

All thanks to the Air force sha, if not for them, the terrorists would have over run the whole of Marte by now.

Yeaaa we had series of prayer session. A military personnel in church said a massive operation is loading all over the NE that is why the Cameroonians are here. Funnily enough I barely saw Cameroon Guntrucks they mostly came with lots of APC's and MBT's.

We all prayed for Soldiers that will be committed in this final onslaught that there will no casualties.

Tho the CO warned against soldiers who go to operation with the intention of dealing with or shooting a colleague oh shocked I was shocked to hear such things happen.

I was so motivated to enlist in this operation with the kind of motivational speech the CO gave cheesy

You're wrong bro.
Those guys are not better trained than the Nigerian soldiers, that we experience setbacks in some battles doesn't take away anything from the soldiers. We've being pounding the terrorists week in week out with little or no media coverage but whenever the terrorists attack and overrun an isolated military outpost it is overblown by the media.
The only thing stoping ISWAP from getting to you are the soldiers, if you can't atleast pray for them to overcome the enemies you can simply look away.

Stop waisting your time on posy that are based on emotions !

They don't make research at all. And the word "investigate" don't exist in their dictionary. They only publish articles based on "hear say" and what I called "beer parlour" analysis.

The speed at which the media carried the news of the capturing of the town was astonishing, yet several hours after the defeat of the insurgents, most of these media groups are yet to update their subscribers. This is very embarrassing and the truth is that the reason Nigeria has lost the PR war to the insurgents is largely political. It is very imbecilic to gloat over bad news concerning the country because you don't like the president or the people you supported in the last election lost. To some, the news of deaths of hundreds of people weekly is always welcomed so that they can feel justified that they didn't vote for the current government.
The terrorists attacked at night surprising the garrison, the garrison retreated initially and as soon as air support was available, the soldiers rallied and counterattacked clearing the town of terrorist.
As the military offensive becomes more intense in the Timbuktu triangle and Alargano forest, the terrorists will keep on lunching more attacks elsewhere in order to distract the military from the Timbuktu triangle offensive. The attacks will be more frequent and more daring, they will put a lot of efforts into attacking isolated towns and garrisons elsewhere just to distract and we might even lose some territories but they won't be able to hold it because they will have to keep on attempting to capture more towns for their strategy to work.
Now is the time to put all bases and garrisons at the highest level of alertness, increase fortification and increase air interdiction operations in Northern Borno and the lake Chad region to destroy the logistics bases and supply routes, if possible critical link bridges should be sacrificed just to prevent easy movement of the terrorists. It is sad that majority of the air assets that can carry out interdiction missions are currently out of operation, it is consoling though that they are currently being repaired and serviced. How nice would it have been to allocate assets capable of CAS to strictly providing support for the army offensive while assets capable of air interdiction to reducing the terrorist strength in Lake Chad axis.
To be frank, I highly doubt all territories can be recaptured this year. Maybe next year if the another offensive of this scale is launched by the army when all or most of the expected air assets are available for operations.
The military is currently focused on Alargano and the Timbuktu triangle and if they can establish full control this year, next is the lake Chad axis. This war is far from over but we are definitely on the right course. We only need to rapidly increase the tempo and intensity.

At around April last year, the COAS accounced that Journalist can apply to be embedded with ground troops, it's also a year now, not even one local news agency have done that, at least to the best of my knowledge.

They prefer to sit in their comfortable offices far from danger, making disparaging remarks and comments about the efforts of the military, Using click-baits as traffic to their websites.

In order to realize the magnitude of the counter insurgency operation in terms of area, I decided to compare the land mass of some local governments in Borno state with that of some state.
Figures in km²
Lagos state - 3,577

Marte LGA - 3,280
Mobbar LGA - 3,280
Biu - 3,423
Abadam- 4,172
Magumeri - 5,057
Kukawa - 5,124
Bama - 5,158
Konduga - 6,065
Damboa - 6,426

There are several other local governments in Borno state with landmass greater than 2000km²
Imagine the immense size of the campaign map!

Note: All figures were gotten from Wikipedia, if you have a trusted data, you can bring it here and we can compare.

The military failed in the intelligence aspect regarding this attack, they were warned in advance yet it had to happen before they acted... They should find a way to improve response to threats in advance.

How many❓ ❓ Wing Loong II UAV did the NAF procure. Particularly as UAV are becoming the face and core component of modern warfare and in particular attrition warfare.
