****One Nigeria crew, food for thought****

The Federal Government said it would spend the sum of thirty billion Naira on the upgrade of Umaru Musa ‘Yar’adua International Airport, Katsina.

The Minister of Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika disclosed this at an empowerment program organised by the National Directorate of Employment, NDE, in Katsina.

The minister added that within the next one month, his ministry will begin work on the establishment of a fire fighting vehicles assembly and repairs plant in Katsina.

Sirika added that the plant which will cater for the whole country would be a source of employment for 2500 youth, adding that there was no government in the history of the country that supported the down trodden more than the present government.

Other works to be done at the airport, the minister disclosed include the repairs of runways and the perimeter fence.

I'm not surprised one bit! Buahris' insatiable desire to grab as much as he can from our commonwealth to his core-north in general and Katsina in particular....this is the stuff of legend! Books will be written and courses designed in depts of Political Science to study his phenomenal nepotistic tendencies and penchant for primitive accumulation of resources mainly to his region to the exclusion of all else!

Look at AIIA Enugu that rehabilitation works started on more than a year ago! As we speak, they're yet to conclude, and what they've done thus far isn't much to write home about given time already spent and the 10 billion naira they say was allocated for the project! Just imagine....10 billion for the 5th or 6th busiest airport in the country....meanwhile, a near comatose Katsina already has the princely sum of tarty billion for their akant! If ever there was a glaring case of injustice and 'all animals not being equal' this is it!

They know Anambra is building a airport! Can anyone tell me what interest Buhari and his minion Hadi-Sirika have shown thus far to aid its speedy completion?

Proposed N47b international market will transform Anambra economic profile - Obiano

The Anambra State Government says it has concluded plans with Anambra JC Michaels Nigerial Limited under a Public Private Partnership arrangement to build State of the Act Ultra Modern International Market.

The Ultra Modern International Market with 10,000 shops capacity estimated to cost about N47B (Forty Seven Billion Naira) and occupying a land space of about 20.8 hectres at Isiagu, Awka-South Local Government Area.

Speaking during the inspection of the project site to monitor the extent of work, the state Governor, Chief (Dr.) Willie Obiano described it as a market of tomorrow capable of further improve the commercial profile and strengthen the economy of the State.

He said the market on completion would be first of its kind in Sub-Sahara Africa with prospensity to have modern facilities like internet connectivity, access roads, hospitals, schools, banks, flyovers and basement.

Obiano, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Solo Chukwulobelu and the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Chief Primus Odili stated that locating the market away from Awka was strategic to decongest the Awka Town and ease traffic.

He assured that the State Government would play her role by putting access roads to the project site, adding that with the presence of a financier, the market would be completed at due time.

Earlier in his welcome speech, the Chairman, Anambra JC Michael Nigeria Limited, Chief Jude Amuzie explained that the Ultra Modern Market, was designed to provide unique features in making market transactions easier and faster under conducive atmosphere.

He disclosed that the market structure would be completed in phases, explaining that 17 buildings with 120 lock-up shops on each building (total of 2040 shops) would be ready for use by April, 2021.

Amuzie praised the Governor of the State, Chief Obiano for reposing confidence on Anambra JC Michaels and assured that State Government dream for better economic prospect for the State through modern market would be actualized.

He appealed to the State Government to assist the project by providing access roads, pointing out that this would ease movement of machines and equipments to the site.

Mr. Anayo Nwosu, who spoke on behalf of the management of Keystone Bank Plc (The Financier) descried the Ultra Modern Market as the gateway to other projects that would promote the economic prospects of Anambra State and assured that the Bank is committed to the project.

Mr. Nwosu therefore called for patronage from all citizens, investors and business communities from the zone.

The Traditional Ruler of Isiagu, HRH Igwe Augustine Nwankwo expressed joy that the project had started and assured of his community support for the progress of the project.

Igwe Nwankwo commended the Governor for sighting the project in the town and stated that Isiagu would continue to support the State Government and APGA for recognizing the community.

Also in attendance were the Hon. Commissioner for Commerce, Uche Okafor, his counterpart in Housing, Arch Michael Okonkwo and Rev. Okwosa of the Anambra Capital Development Authority (ACDA) among others.

This is an excellent news!!!

Since Onitsha main market was built in the 1950s no new market of that size had ever been built again in Anambra. So, this is a very welcome development if they make it to be truly modern in design and construction....not just adding the word "ultra modern" to it.

My plea is that they apply good modern design so that the final product will be both aesthetically appealing, conducive for business as well as tourism. The design in the picture below is so far the best open market design i have seen recently in Nigeria and it should be emulated and improved upon.

Biko post the Onitsha stockfish market here OR hush when important issues are being discussed. You probably haven't even been to Onitsha in the last 40 years, but you will like to post rubbish just for the sake of saying something.

I know you have never been to the new building materials market Ogidi, nor have you been to the new shoe market at Nkwelle Ezunaka. Even the new "Abada" market at the foot of the Niger bridge. Among all these "new markets", none is more beautiful or better planned than the electronics market built in the 1990s! Your type will be thinking of one slum market in LAGOS as the standard. Since all the slums in Lagos are your standard for development without knowing Lagos itself is a slum. You should copy other open markets in other decent developing countries NOT LAGOS!

The point being, we want this new market to truly stand out as an ultra modern space comparable to such anywhere in the world! Not just building another market for the sake of it without car parks, areas for restaurants, banks, entertainment and other facilities. This is an opportunity to build the BIGGEST tourist attraction in Anambra state if it is done right and to world standard NOT LAGOS standard as our people are fixated on Lagos style markets.

No, just a picture of markets in Nigeria that i saw online. My point is that we should try and improve our standard a little in Nigeria.
Instead of building the same substandard things over and over. I posted that picture because for the first time, i saw a Nigerian market making space for parking lot and setting space aside for banks, restaurants and other entertainment to come and develop that section. Although the scale was small, but we have to stop building markets like a bunch of lockup shops lined up without any space for facilities, relaxation or even parking.

Onitsha is actually a well planned city that has surrendered to the chaos of primitive market trading. Onitsha downtown is like Lagos Island without the big businesses. Now Lagos government is determined to restore it to its former glory by removing all the attachment businesses and street traders.

For Anambra, they need to force modernization on the markets and decongest the inner town.

Obi built at least 8 buildings at Amaku transforming it to a modern "Nigerian standard" hospital. However, the construction was substandard and the roofs of many of those buildings are partially collapsing or leaking. The place also lacks a central water reticulation system which is critical for a hospital and central power plant. Instead you have boreholes, tanks and small generators all over the place.

Under Obiano there is the addition of the oxygen plant and two other buildings still under construction. But the average hotel in Awka is better planned with better facilities than the nonsense I saw at Amaku where they can't even keep the floors clean or cut the grass properly.

Nigerian markets are built with the idea of maximum profit and not planning or aesthetics. The average mall in Nigeria does not have 170 shops in 10,000sqm of space but our local developers will squeeze 170 shops into 2000sqm. The largest mall in America built over 452,000 sqm has just 520 stores.

Government needs to stop approving nonsense market designs. 10,000 shops in a single location is a recipe for chaos. 10,000 shops but will you install adequate toilet facilities? Water? Security? Adequate parking? What about enough space for trailers to offload?

Poverty is of the mind. There is more to life than sitting in a 10x10 shop selling the same thing as 1,000 other people. There is agriculture, craft, publishing, tech, education, health manufacturing. Everyone should not be a retailer.

The Nanka Neros stadium is basic. I have seen the stadium built by Monimichelle in Awka off Onwurah street and it is a small mini stadium good for youth matches and training. The location is not ideal for a conventional stadium and the state government should add other sporting facilities such as tennis, basketball, volleyball and children playpens, along with foid/drinks concessional stands and run it as a sports complex with gate fees. There is a large population of people that converge on Ekwueme Square every Saturday that shows the demand for recreational sports and fitness. The concession stands and gate fees can be used for upkeep.
