As regards the contract offer, if Greenwood plays to his potential, scoring goals every week and by 2022 Madrid or Barcelona come knocking, trust me the club will immediately renegotiate that deal.

Why would you want to let a player that scores a goal every week go?

Just match the offer from Madrid if things gets desperate. But I don’t think it’ll get to that.

If he blows they’ll renew the deal a year before it is due to expire and tie him to the club for another 6 years.

I don't know why any one would be gassing up about a 75k deal for a 19 year old which is a 6 year deal.

considering where we are coming from and the way they usually throw money at young players with potential in the past, this is a very good deal. Infact, If I am related to Greenwood, I'll probably be punching his agent for giving him a bad deal and not getting him at least 100k from a club as big as man utd, considering a less talented player like Williams got 75k as well and by that logic, Greenwood should have earned more.

If hypothetically, by any juju or circumstances, Greenwood didn't fulfill his potential , I don't think there would be a problem selling a player on a 75k wage in future. In fact the club will get good money for him because he's not on the usual 130k or 150k that usually cause wahala when we want to offload player.

My post was in response to Panther who said the club only begins negotiation with one year left on the players deal...

I actually have no qualms about how much Greenwood is earning now. I think it’s a really good deal.

The contract will be due for renewal in 2026- when he’s 24 years old. Paying him that much around that age (23, 24) if he becomes phenomenal is a good deal for the club.

I’m guessing we’ll renew the deal before then sha. Cos Greenwood has a huge potential.
Hopefully Greenwood lives up to his potential and hype.

Just to understand the previous discussion on how McFred’s limitations play a role in hindering VDB’s excellence for the team, watch this City vs Everton match.

Like every other City game, they utilize Rodri or Fernandinho in a sole defensive midfield position while having two attacking midfielders in front.

Sought of a ‘W’ shape where each point depicts a player. ‘W’ for the back 5, ‘W’ for the front 5.

This is why Mahrez and B.Silva are free to tension on the right wing, while Sterling and Foden tension on the left wing with G.Jesus operating as the false nine. Both positions with occasional support from the fullbacks.

At United, due to McFred’s limitations amidst brain farts from the Centre-backs, the team has to utilize a diamond midfield formation to pose enough threat but this formation means that the team makes do with two strikers rather than the preferred front 3.

In a case where they choose to use a front 3, it leaves Fernandes with the burden of being the only major creative outlet in the team especially when Pogba isn’t available.

Which means he must cover the attacking midfield positions for both the right and left wing throughout the game while also functioning as the brain in the team. This is a task shared by two players at City, usually Silva / KDB or Gundogan / KDB.

When VDB plays in Fernandes place, like in low profile matches, this task is automatically his, and it’s too much of a burden to bear.

Ndidi would have been the best for the defensive midfield role, as he’ll certainly bring the much needed balance to the midfield while having the abilities of McFred, even better than both individuals and occasionally sneak in as a goal threat.

With such quality, it would be Bruno / VDB / Ndidi or Pogba / Bruno / Ndidi, with Pogba handling the left while Bruno takes care of the right, and an occasional switch.

VDB loves to sneak in-between the opponents backline, but McFred either lack the simple passing ability to deliver good balls or the tenacity to anchor the midfield.

Exactly my thoughts and submissions. Pep does two AMs, Rodri is the only DM. Man Utd would either play double 4 or have some sort of a diamond formation which almost looks like two DMs as the game proceeds.

I don’t have issues with McFred combo when we play big teams, but we should avoid it when we play other teams abeg.

I updated the post.

Exactly though. McFred is efficient against teams that have the right quality to stretch the midfield using their fullbacks e.g Liverpool, but even at that Ndidi still beats both of them combined.

He showed top quality against Liverpool despite functioning as a sole defensive midfielder, whereas McFred usually have to share the role else the midfield will collapse.

The reason why we play diamond is because we have more CM than wingers. James and Greenwood are hardly giving us the numbers from the wings. And that's even against tougher opponents sef.

Beside Ndidi is Tielemans. Plus the wingers and attackers put in great shift when without the ball. Vardy is even comfortable playing that way so he has space to run. Which of our CM offers the solidity Tielemans is offering beside Ndidi or you think Ndidi is doing it all by himself? Do you understand the shift Barnes and co is even putting in to make things work? I tell you, if we swap McFred for Ndidi today, we will still have problems

The discussion is how McFred play a role in hindering VDBs excellence for the team.

I have explained it up there that Fernandes bears the same burden that two attacking midfielders bear at Man City.

Which means that when VDB is put to replace Fernandes, he automatically bears same burden, and he can’t function properly with that much on him, Lingard and Perriera were much worse in same position.

And considering putting in a shift, the same is done for any position on the pitch regardless of the team. Leicester’s not special, but in spite of that, Ndidi still brings that long-sought balance to the midfield.

It’s understandable that this might look alien because we’re already familiar with McFred, but as a team looking to dominate the league and the continent at large, these little things matter. Matic could have been the better option in the team if not for old legs.
