1. Renewables will basically be an addition to the power mix for most countries for several years to come.
2. When base power supply sources (coal, oil and natural gas) dips, strangely, renewable energy production also dips - there is a reason for that. Most of what drives these "renewables" depend on base power supply sources.
3. There will never be a situation in the world, where we can achieve 100% renewable power supply.

So, the "adventure" of going completely green is impossible. The best we can achieve is a world where we have a mix of energy sources - and that will definitely outlast you.

It's not possible for a country to have only once source of energy. That would be the height of craziness. It means if that sole source of energy fails, the whole country would suffer an energy crisis. Countries design and energy mix according to their specific peculiarities. It involves renewables such as hydro, solar, wind, thermal and then non renewables such as coal, oil and gas. There is also nuclear which is becoming increasingly viable with advancing technology. Right thinking people are promoting more of clean energy (those with little or no co2 and other green house emissions) and discouraging the use of dirty hydrocarbon sources of energy for the future. This cannot be done in an instant. China that is the leading promoter of clean energy is also still the highest use of dirty energy (coal). Everything is for future projections.
We can't wait until the full catastrophic effects of green house gasses hit us before we start planning.
