Paramount launches N-Raven long range swarming UAV system

Paramount Advanced Technologies (PAT) has launched a long-range precision strike swarming unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) system called N-Raven.

Announced during the IDEX trade show in the United Arab Emirates on 22 February, Paramount said the N-Raven family of autonomous, multi-mission aerial vehicles featuring next generation ‘swarm’ technologies to accomplish numerous missions with pinpoint precision.

The N-Raven family has been designed for technology transfer and portable manufacture from within partner countries, the company said. “In doing so, the N-Raven addresses a myriad of mission requirements, including ‘future warfighter engagements’ where intelligent ‘swarming technologies’ combined with multiple munition loitering and attack operations have been proven to ensure mission survivability.”

Operational units can launch the N-Raven UAV from multiple land-based, naval, and airborne platforms. The UAVs can strike both static and moving targets.

The 41 kg N-Raven has a cruise speed of approximately 180 km/hr and a loitering endurance time of approximately two hours. N-Raven swarm loitering munitions offer a variety of sensors with each being capable of carrying a 10–15 kg payloads up to a range of 250 km.

The system provides detection, identification, location, and reportage (DILR) against various targets.

“Equivalent to positioning multiple personnel on the ground in often austere, high-risk environments, the N-Raven is designed to saturate an area with Electro-Optical/Infra-Red (EO/IR), Semi-Active Laser sensor-driven target identification and tracking technologies to provide a rapid, data-rich picture of activity,” Paramount said.

A field simulator is optionally available which connects to the system’s control unit, allowing the N-Raven crew to rehearse each mission before launch. The UAV’s recording capabilities allow for a full debrief and ensure a positive learning curve for the end-user’s personnel.

Paramount said it developed the N-Raven as a robust yet cost-effective technology solution, utilising proven commercial components and experience gained from the company’s long legacy in the development of UAV systems, including the Meteorite.

Lee Connelly, CEO of Paramount Advanced technologies, stated, “We continue to research, design and innovate new technologies that remove military personnel from the front lines, minimise collateral damage and exposure of friendly forces. At the same time providing surveillance and engagement support, and helping armed forces around the world garner greater intelligence and mission success.


“We are accordingly very excited to launch the N-Raven unmanned aerial vehicle at IDEX, and showcase its diverse capabilities in addressing the battlefield challenges of 2021 and beyond”.

Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom on Monday accused Bala Mohammed, Bauchi State governor, of being a terrorist.

“I am beginning to think that my brother, the governor of Bauchi State is part of the terrorist Fulani organisation that is terrorising this country,” Ortom said while addressing journalists in Makurdi, Benue State capital.

“Why do I say this? This is the same governor who took the oath of office to protect the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. This constitution does not leave room for allowing foreign herdsmen to come in without valid papers,” he added.

He also referred to the assertion by Mohammed that herders should carry AK-47 to defend themselves as being “unconstitutional.”

“His recent outburst that Fulani herdsmen are justified for carrying AK-47 to protect themselves. I don’t know where the constitution of this country allows that,” he said.

Ortom, therefore, called Mohammed to render an unreserved apology to Nigerians and learn from the provisions of the constitution that, land both territorial, forest, and aquatic, are vested on the governor of a state who holds them in trust.

Mohammed’s comment on armed herdsmen had earlier triggered a wave of condemnation from his counterparts and Nigerians alike, increasing calls for the prohibition of open grazing.

Ortom and his Ondo counterpart, Rotimi Akeredolu, were quick to knock the Bauchi governor’s statement.

“Bala Mohammed has even poured more petrol into the fire because his speech is unexpected of him. It will become very serious and nobody will be spared,” Akeredolu said.

After widespread criticism, Mohammed on Friday defended his comment about armed herders, explaining that he used AK-47 as a figure of speech for protection.

“It is a figure of speech to show you the despondence, the desperation and frustration and the agony that this particular person is exposed to by his own people, by his own tribe and by other tribes who have all seen him as a criminal and therefore, he has the inalienable right to protect himself,” the governor said during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily.

Borno Attack: Hundreds Trapped As Boko Haram Hoists Flags In Marte

On Sunday, the Chief of Army Staff, Maj. Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru, issued a 48-hour deadline for the troops of Operation Lafiya Dole to recapture.

Hundreds of people have been trapped in towns and villages after Boko Haram fighters dislodged Nigerian troops in Marte Local Government Area of Borno State over a week ago.

Credible sources told the Daily Trust that the terrorists loyal to the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) have also hoisted their flags in many places including military outposts in New Marte and Kirenowa, the biggest town in the local government.

On Sunday, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Maj. Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru issued a 48-hour deadline for the troops of Operation Lafiya Dole to recapture Marte from Boko Haram terrorists.

He also directed them to reclaim Kirenowa, Kirta, Wulgo, Chikingudo, and many other communities around Marte and Ngala local government areas.

Our correspondents report that after weeks of attempts to capture the strategic town, Marte fell into the hands of Boko Haram on Monday, February 15.

It was learnt that the terrorists have also taken possession of the military formation in Marte, including high profile fighting equipment and vehicles.

Army installations under the 22 Armoured Brigade in Marte, including the 153 Infantry Battalion located in the same base were expected to provide security in the area. It was learnt that the brigade commander has been redeployed.

Sources said following the departure of the Nigerian troops, Boko Haram fighters have stationed their fighters in strategic locations while others are serving as police, giving directives to locals who were unable to leave places like Kirenowa and others.

“The terrorists have taken people in the town hostage. They are now in control of mosques, hospitals and other government buildings,” one of our sources said.

Another source said: “They are in absolute control of Marte and environs, giving directives as to when people can go out. It is like what happened years ago when they established their territory in the outskirt of Kirenowa close to Nigeria’s border with Cameroon.

“People would have to take permission from them before doing anything. I pray that Nigerian authorities would mobilise and reclaim the town soon,” he said.

Marte is over 130 kilometres from Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, and is located on the western coast of Lake Chad.

Following the attack by Boko Haram, the military operatives in the town had to relocate to Dikwa, 90 kilometres to Maiduguri.

What the COAS said about Marte

During his visit to Dikwa, Maj. Gen. Attahiru while addressing the troops at the Army Super Camp 9 at Dikwa, which also fell into the hands of Boko Haram on February 19, but recaptured by troops 24 hours after, said they should go back to Marte.

An impeccable source told the Daily Trust that the Brigade Commander of the 22 Brigade in Dikwa, Brig. General Y. Ibrahim, has also been redeployed.

“I have just spoken to the Theatre Commander and the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of 7 Division. You must not let this nation down.

“Go back and do the needful and I will be right behind you,” he told the troops, warning them not to allow themselves to be over-run by Boko Haram insurgents.

“You are aware of the recent attack on Dikwa and Marte. You should not allow this to happen again. Go after them and clear those bastards,” he said.

Many Super Camps were established during the days of the former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Tukur Buratai (rtd) and they were meant to serve as safe zones from where troops could launch serious offensives.

How Boko Haram fighters took over Marte

Daily Trust reports that at least seven Nigerian soldiers attached to the 153 Infantry Battalion in Marte were killed after the terrorists attacked the area about nine days ago.

A source said there was a serious confrontation between the troops who had to retreat, leaving the terrorists behind in the town.

“Only a truck and two staff cars were salvaged. All other heavy military ranged weapons were destroyed or taken as booty,” the source said.

He said most of the attacks by the insurgents on the installations were launched “from the Monguno road area but during the last assault, the insurgents unexpectedly came from the Dikwa side.

“And before then, they have gained access to the town and mixed with the returnees. There was no way any soldier could counter a shooter’s shot because definitely civilian returnees will be killed.

Even when air support arrived, the jets could not fire any weapon to counter them. Of course, soldiers had to move to Dikwa town.”

In December 2020, the Borno State Government resettled 500 displaced families in New Marte and sources said many of them are still there at the mercy of Boko Haram.

One of the returnees in Marte, Kullima Ibrahim, who succeeded in fleeing, said residents were enjoying relative peace before the recent attacks.

Troops will reclaim Marte – Zulum

Governor Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno State has expressed confidence that the Nigerian troops would reclaim Marte and environs within the 48-hour target given to them.

The governor made the statement on Monday at the official launching of the North-East Development Commission’s Rapid Response Intervention Projects (RRI).

“I want to assure that my administration is in full support of the military and other security agencies to recapture Marte Local Government Area, which was attacked and currently under the occupation of Boko Haram.

“These renewed attacks in some parts of the state, especially in Dikwa and Marte and other resettled communities would not deter the present administration in its recovery, reconstruction and resettlement drive in the state,” Zulum stated.

‘Troops must rescue residents on time’

Speaking on recent developments in Dikwa, a security expert, Salihu Bakhari, said: “Between the last three months of 2020 and now, the ISWAP fighters had launched daring attacks on Marte more than six times and were repelled by the Nigerian troops until the latest attack.

“ISWAP has interest in places like Marte because it has large swath of unmanned borders and its fighters can easily move in and out of Nigeria with their supplies, including food and logistics such as weapons.”

A Public Affairs Analyst, Abubakar Mohammed Kareto, said that Marte is economically important to the government and the people and urged the military to do everything within their reach to ensure that it is well protected.

“Marte is an important economic town not only to Borno but Nigeria. Marte has 5,000 hectares (12,355 acres) of wheat and rice when Boko Haram first attacked the town in 2013.

“All these were left to rot that time; Chad Basin Development Agency alone lost 200 metric tonnes of wheat as a result of the exodus of the attack in 2013 according to the agency.

“Apart from this economic and agricultural strength of Marte, its proximity to the shores of Lake Chad and other major Boko Haram operational camps, Marte is indeed a place of major interest to Boko Haram.

“Therefore, the government should not allow the insurgents to dominate Marte and its environs.

“We need Marte to boost our wheat production and to ensure that the Chad Basin Development Agency return when it is safe.

“The directives given by the chief of army staff with a defined timeline to recapture Marte is a morale booster to the troops and demonstration of seriousness.

“This action will also help in winning the hearts of the locals,” Kareto said.

“Another security source feared that the people trapped in Marte and adjoining villages could be indoctrinated by the insurgents if nothing was done urgently.

But one of the army commanders in Maiduguri said: “This marching order is very timely…Our troops are actively working to ensure that we clear them from the entire general areas.”

Daily Trust recalled that Marte was sometime in 2012 taken over by the Boko Haram fighters who held sway for over two years at the height of their territorial conquests.

However, on February 2, 2015, the Nigerian Army recaptured the town from the terrorists including big towns like Gamboru, Mafa, Mallam Fatori and Abadam, among others.

5 slaughtered in Damboa

No fewer than five Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) have been slaughtered in Damboa Local Government Area of the state on Sunday.

The IDPs reportedly went in search of firewood outside Damboa town when the incident happened. According to a member of the local vigilance group, Abu Damboa, the IDPs were declared missing when they did not return.

“We got the report that some IDPs were missing. So, we swung into action but later found five of them beheaded two kilometres away from the scene where they were falling trees,” he said.

Humanitarian sources also confirmed the incident, saying the victims have been buried according to Islamic rites.

The abducted passengers of the Niger State Transport Authority bus, who regained freedom from captivity on Sunday, have narrated their ordeals in the hands of their captors.

They told journalists in Minna on Monday that their experience was terrible and horrible.

One of them, Hajia Jummai Isah, said: “They were threatening us and beating the men.

“They really beat the hell out of the men, but all they wanted from us was money.

“They kept demanding money from us so that they would spare us, if not, they said they’d kill us. They used to give us dirty water to drink from the stream.

“Their ammunition is out of this world. I’d never seen that kind of arms before in my life. They’ve different kinds of assorted weapons.”

Muhammed Kindagi, a civil servant with the Niger State Science and Technical School Board, said: “If we ate in the morning, we wouldn’t eat another one till evening, with contaminated water to drink.

“We were sleeping on bare floors in the bush. We were not tied, but guns were pointed at our heads and they were beating us constantly every day.

“They beat our women too. There was one useless one among them who didn’t bother whether you’re a woman or a man before he started beating you.

“They beat us with sticks. As they’re beating us, they’re asking us to bring money.

“They asked us to forgive them and we said we forgave them. We asked them to forgive us too so that we could leave the bush.”

Another freed passenger, Hamza Muhammed Buhari, said: “They starved us because they only gave us handful of food that was not enough.

“We cooked rice with contaminated water, while about ten of us took a bottle of contaminated water. We were tortured daily. It was indeed bad and terrible.”

The freed passengers had been taken to the hospital for treatment.

Meanwhile, the 27 students, three staff and family members of Government Science College, Kagara, Niger State abducted last Wednesday were still in captivity as of the time of filing this report yesterday.

Hundreds of victims of the farmers/herders’ crisis in the Yewa North Local Government Area of Ogun State who are taking refuge in Benin Republic have shunned the palliatives of the state government.

They insisted that they would not return to their villages in Nigeria until security improved.

The PUNCH had exclusively reported that many residents fled to Benin Republic, among whom five pregnant women were delivered of their babies.

The state government on Sunday wooed the victims with palliatives, which were taken to their villages, but no one was on ground to collect them.

The Chairman, Subcommittee on Palliatives, Olaolu Olabimtan, who is also the Commissioner for Budget and Planning, while delivering the palliatives to the stakeholders in the area, described the gesture as a sign of better things to come.

When asked about the plan for the palliatives, the Eselu of Iseluland, Oba Akintunde Akinyemi, on Monday disclosed that residents were not available to receive them from the state government.

He said many of the residents preferred to be slaves elsewhere than die on their own land due to the level of insecurity in the area.

“We thank the governor for doing that, then, we have begged our people to come home; we are working on the assurance of security when they return, but right now, the whole place has been deserted. The palliatives are outside there, there is no one to collect them.

“It is a terrible situation; nobody is around. They have deserted the houses, the schools, everywhere. Palliatives are in Tata; we can’t go and pick them because we are still looking for who to give them to; some residents are even saying that they won’t come until there is security.

“We have been getting in touch with them, some are in Ipobe, some are in Eegelu, Port Novo, and others are saying that it is better for them to be slaves elsewhere than to be killed in Nigeria,” he added.

Renowned Islamic cleric, Sheik Ahmad Gumi, yesterday, insisted that the armed Fulani herdsmen are not bandits but militants fighting for ethnic survival.

The former captain in the Nigeria Defence Academy, NDA, spoke on Channels Television’s Politics Today, while reeling out his experience with the armed herders. His words: “It is a complex issue. It is an ethnic war and the solution is dialogue and teaching them Islam. To them, they are talking about an ethnic existence.”

Asked if the armed bandits are Nigerians, Gumi said: “They are Nigerians. I hate to call them bandits. They are militants fighting for ethnic survival. They want to defend themselves. If there is peace, you will not see such things as banditry, kidnapping among others.

If you are talking about victims, they have more victims on their side than others. To them, they are fighting a war of existence. If you have seen them (herdsmen), you will discover they have nothing like civilization other than the guns they are carrying.

“We are trying to talk to them to drop their guns. There are peace processes ongoing and they are ready to put down their arms. They are not killing people; they are just engaged in ethnic revenge. The Fulani herdsmen are victims of military excesses. The armed herdsmen are kidnapping to make money.”

Speaking further, he said: “When bandits go to a Fulani village, they go in groups and ransack the village just to revenge. It is a form of revenge. It is not because of criminality, it is ethnic revenge.”

When asked why it is difficult for the military intelligence to know where the bandits are, the cleric said: “The military knows where they are. When they go in and start killing, the military realize they are creating a monster. The Federal Government should go in and negotiate.”


While clarifying that the armed herdsmen are not Boko Haram insurgents, he said: “I can say categorically that they are not Boko Haram but we have to be very careful. The Boko Haram we know are internationally connected but so far, they are not Boko Haram; they have some elements of Boko Haram and they presented it to the government.”

They are citizens, they recognize the government and they are happy now that Boko Haram is not involved in their cause. We should come in now and give them the full teachings of Islam.”

No fewer than 2 policemen were in the early hours of Tuesday feared dead by suspected hoodlums following the invasion of Abayi police station located at the World Bank Housing Estate in the commercial nerve centre of Abia, ABN TV reports.

According to a police source who confirmed the story to ABN TV said the incident occurred at about 2am on Tuesday.

About two weeks ago, a police station in Omoba, Isialangwa South was also attacked, leading to the death of two policemen.

No fewer than 2 policemen were in the early hours of Tuesday feared dead by suspected hoodlums following the invasion of Abayi police station located at the World Bank Housing Estate in the commercial nerve centre of Abia, ABN TV reports.

According to a police source who confirmed the story to ABN TV said the incident occurred at about 2am on Tuesday.

The station was also set on fire, causing tension in the area.

Names of the officers killed during the attack were simply given as SGT Emmanuel and ASP Vincent.

The police armoury in the division was also looted while many vehicles were burnt to ashes.

The source said there was a stiff resistance by the police operatives who were however overpowered by the hoodlums.

Let IPOB form a political party. Once they control all the political positions in the South East, then it will be far more easy to ask for secession in a legitimate way and the FG will take them serious.
