Hmm, like i stated from the very first, a Nation the size of Nigeria, with her open borders, with West predilection for fuelling insecurities in African nations, Nigeria’s wealth, importance , capabilities and so on, Nigeria needs at least a million man strong military. You need the manpower at least in economic circumstance that necessitates arming them with sticks and rubber boots even. Nigeria also needs to look at social media, the borders, policing - and for god sake you the important Nairaland members need to advice MODs to resist populating Front Page with negative news. There are many positive as well as neutral and engaging articles that deserve Front Page promotion you can find in Niaraland’s other subsections. mekussa: All F.O.B in the north east has been reduced to form Super camps. Marte was attacked not once before it fell, in my own opinion one should blame top brass in the Army and Airforce, where is the air force in all these siege. For a place that was under attack between weeks, there should be constant air surveillance on the general area to where they're are lunching the attack from and to checkmate them. Marte fell due to constant pressure/attack on the super camp, I think this is the first time a "super camp" will be captured by BHT/ISWAP. 1 Like |

Attacks on soldiers: Security operatives arrest 20 IPOB members in Orlu Nigerian security operatives in an operation involving the Army, Air force and the Police in Orlu community of Imo State have arrested 20 members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, according to PRNigeria. According to the website, the arrest of members of the secessionist group followed recent attacks on soldiers and civilians in Orlu town. IPOB members who were using Orlu as their base had reportedly ambushed and killed our soldiers who were on the escort of the Director Civil Affairs, Brigadier General HE Nzan and his team on inspection of the Civil-Military Project at a nearby Nkwerre community, PR Nigeria reported quoting an unnamed intelligence source. The IPOB militias also allegedly took away weapons and a vehicle belonging to the troops. “Since the beginning of the year, the activities of IPOB militias through its untenable and unreasonable demand for secession, has adversely affected the security situation in the area. “The activities of the threat elements have led to an increase in organized crimes such as armed robbery, car snatching, kidnapping, raping and sundry violent criminal acts. “There have been attacks on civilians, police and military personnel on checkpoints and escort duty. The website also reported that items and equipment including AK-47 rifles, locally-made pistols, dane guns, cartridge ammunition, IPOB flags, water pumping machine, military fragmental jackets, mobile handsets, among others were recovered during raid on IPOB training camps in Imo and Anambra State. “Recall that troops of 34 Brigade in conjunction with the Imo State Police Command, on Friday 22 January 2021, carried out raids in Okporo/Ezenta and Akata axis of Orlu Local Government Area to recover the corpse of a police officer killed by IPOB elements. “During the raids, one IPOB member was killed and a vehicle (Jeep) was recovered. Various IPOB training camps were also discovered and destroyed.” “Similarly, last Wednesday, a raid operation was conducted in a forest close to Lilu village in Ihiala General Area of Anambra State by combined troops of the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Air Force and the Nigeria Police. “Thereafter, troops exploited further into the IPOB Camps. The militia men were suspected to have escaped with their dead colleagues and varying degrees of gunshot wounds,” the source was quoted as saying. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.pmnewsnigeria.com/2021/02/22/attacks-on-soldiers-security-operatives-arrest-20-ipob-members-in-orlu/amp/ |

Many Nigerian soldiers were on Monday killed when a Boko Haram terrorist rammed an explosives-laden vehicle into them during a clash in Yobe State, a military source told SaharaReporters. The bomber, believed to be a member of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) faction of the group, targeted the military convoy in Goniri, a border community between Yobe and Borno states. SaharaReporters gathered that the insurgents also engaged the Nigerian troops in a shootout. “There was an SVBIED (Suicide Vehicle Borne Improvised Explosive Device) attack at Goniri yesterday, so many soldiers were killed and injured. The number of casualties is currently unknown,” a military source said. On Sunday, the group killed five Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Borno State. SaharaReporters gathered that the IDPs were attacked inside a forest outside Damboa town while they were searching for firewood. ISWAP, which split from the mainstream Boko Haram in 2016, has become a dominant group, focusing on military targets and high-profile attacks, including against aid workers. The Nigerian Army has repeatedly claimed that the insurgency had been largely defeated and frequently underplays any losses. The terror group has caused over 40,000 deaths and displaced millions of individuals mainly in Adamawa, Borno, and Yobe states. http://saharareporters.com/2021/02/23/breaking-iswap-suicide-bomber-kills-many-nigerian-soldiers-yobe |

Marte isn't a super camp, it had about 800 soldiers stationed there but is one of the few locations that are prioritized by the military for air support whenever it is attacked. The terrorists attacked from the midst of displaced people moving into the town so troops couldn't shoot back. In fact the air support deployed couldn't do much. The troops had to retreat leaving several weapons to the terrorists. The attack also came from a different direction from former attacks. The mistake the military made is that they should have increased the garrison in the town since 2020. It has been under attacks several times in the last 11 months alone. The terrorists were determined to capture it and are also determined to hold it as they are now holding the population hostage and using them as human shields to prevent any meaningful attack from the military. The military is now very focused on recapturing marte. Some parts of Dikwa were captured by the terrorists but they couldn't hold it, the military recaptured all parts less than 24hrs after the initial attack. Also, I believe efforts to rescue the Kagara boys distracted the military a lot. To much concentration on the rescue operation especially on the part of the airforce likely resulted in setbacks over the weekend. 1 Like |

JOSCOFELIX: The operation is very dangerous and also very crucial to the success of the northern Borno operation that will commence soon. The offensive operation may stall by end of April when the raining season is expected to begin if all objectives are not achieved before then. It is a race against time and ISWAP is trying desperately to ensure that the military doesn't meet up. 2 Likes |

Valkrie: There is an ongoing offensive and its in phases. The current phase is targeting the JAS faction and has dislodge them from their strongholds in the sambisa and Alargano forests. The next phase will be starting soon and will target ISWAP faction in the northern Borno axis. All troops can't be on the offensive at the same time, there isn't enough air support to go round and it will also be very difficult to resupply and so on. Also there is need for holding force to prevent liberated territories from being reoccupied by the terrorists once the soldiers return to their bases. That was the mistake the military made in its 2014-2015 and 2018 offensive. They have to garrison the towns and villages and so on. If the other paramilitary institutions were functioning, there wouldn't be need for heavy military garrisons and there will be more troops available for offensive operations. 3 Likes |
