This thread has become a place for tragicomedy. My dear country Nigeria, I wonder when we will get things right. Lives are been lost every day and the ordinary man as a soldier is been used as fodder to sustain these fat pot bellied generals and politicians. The problem affecting the Nigerian military is systemic, it includes the whole nation. I expected that after many years of fighting an enemy, lessons are learnt and solutions proffered. If this was a serious country, the doctrine of the military would've been changed to fighting insurgency and relevant equipment provided, but no, no, no, na my country be dis, people dey cash out and they won't speak truth to authority. The foundation for this rot we are seeing was laid down from the middle 80's by past military and successive govts. The love for the military was not to serve but to be military govs and ADC's. Most of the command and general staff of the military since this insurgency started are of the 80's intake. We need a stop gap and it must be drastic for both the officer corps and the enlisted.

You’ve said it all.

I’m still wondering how Bokoharam with Hilux guntrucks are overrunning Military bases with Battle Tanks, Artillery, APCs.

To be candid something is definitely wrong somewhere.

Where do ISWAP return to after withdrawing from attacks. Do we have aircrafts that watches from the sky? Borno is a flat land and these guys move to their bases freely?

We are not ready to tell ourselves the truth.

Well even when you ask such questions here, many paddies will rather come for your head than allow these questions sink in their minds.

Well Houses must be built in Abuja, Kaduna or Lagos at the expense of our patriot lives.

In Nigeria we keep quiet instead of asking the authority questions and demanding answers. The irony of it all is that the ones that were able to demand for good stewardship from the govt and for the military were silenced using the military. I understand that an enlisted has to obey an order, even a wrong order but what happens if he doesn't? Nigerians leave him to his fate, social media and keyboard warriors praise him to high heavens but don't do anything when court martialled and unjustly imprisoned. The problem with Nigeria is a peculiar one, it's not the absence of good leadership (most of them are educated and know the right thing to do but they know they will get away with every impunity) but a followership that is bad, docile and divided within these fault lines of religion, nepotism and tribalism. The ones that are raising up their voices are stifled and termed as paid opposition. Truth be told the Nigerian soldier is not cowardly, most of them in the North East have seen death and faced death eyeball to eyeball but the Nigerian people and Govt have failed them.

They have several hundred bases for several hundred cells. They only muster wheen they've been activated for an attack. The airforce has bombed several of their bases(check DHQ's Twitter page, you will see some videos) but they rebuild after each airstrike. They learn quickly and adapt very easily whereas the military is very slow to adaptation. They've shown that the supercamps no longer serve the purpose for which they were established yet it will take the military several months and several dead soldiers before they review it. The terrorists suffered greatly in 2014/2018 when they were controlling cities, today, you will never see them holding such cities because they know they will never be able to defend it. So they attack (to show that they can) and withdraws afterwards.
The objective of the current attacks is to divert attention from the offensive till the beginning of the raining season and they will throw everything behind that.

@SamuelAnyawu, houses are not only being built in Abuja, Kaduna and Lagos alone, they are doing it in Anambra, Imo, Rivers and many more states. The ruling class are from every part of Nigeria, their language is to divide, rule and steal.
@Wheym15, why do you think the military is not fluid in it's tactics? Why are we most times on the defensive or "tactically withdrawing" and attacking after the damage has been done? What is the problem, absence of good leadership, training or equipment?

Sincerely I don’t really understand anymore.

1) The NCOs morale is low. I hangout with them a lot and listen to their ordeals. Most of them ain’t happy.

2) I don’t understand if the weaponry aspect of military bases. I can’t comprehend how insurgents will hilux will dislodge a super camp with a Battle Tank, MRAP and other APCs. I thought a battle tank can precisely take out a guntruck.

3) Definitely the locals give info to these insurgents after all its their brothers, fathers and sons that are members. But also locals give info to military before most attacks occur.

Like the Dikwa attack. Locals informed most NGOs and they pulled out immediately. Tho some where still believing that it won’t be dislodged.

I might slightly agree with type of equipment been employed but not with equipment as a whole. The Nigerian military have more firepower than ISWAP. And it should be harder dislodging defended and dug in positions but we see ISWAP doing it easily.

The military is now a political institution, were promotion and posting is based on who is in my good book undecided rather than performance.
The equipment you listed can only be used properly, when the right orders is given. Leadership is a major problem facing the army and Political interference

Most of us in the country don't give a f*ck what happens to the country and how we can influence it for good, we only care about our own personal interests. In short, patriotism really doesn't exist in Nigeria. And the greed and selfishness will be the end of us.

Apart from the above, one shouldn't expect a professional army to be as fluid as militias and terrorist groups etc because of bureaucracy and red tapism and the thousands of other problems that will normally plague an organized sector.

As for the other questions, the reason this war isn't nearly over yet is lack of will. Government isn't really interested as they should be.

And then, I really don't see any reasonable tactical advantage for the terrorists in overrunning military bases and capturing garrisoned towns that they will eventually have to withdraw from because they can't keep it. If I were in the same position as the Brigadier general, and I'm sure the cost of successfully defending the town will be too high, I would retreat in good order too(leaving little to nothing for the terrorists to loot in my Armoury though) and return back when the terrorists are done burning buildings and have withdrawn.
Tactically, there is really no sense in fighting every battle, there are some you withdraw from so that you can have the upper edge in other unavoidable ones.
What exactly did ISWAP achieve tactically with those attacks? Yes, they resupplied themselves and all but it the airforce will destroy some of the caches later.

The major objective of the two terrorists groups in Nigeria is to establish caliphates that they will govern and rule themselves, with the hope of expanding with time. The military has denied them that at least for now, what the terrorists are doing currently are sting attacks to let the world know they are still very capable and are still existing and also for their survival.
What should be concerning here is that the military heirachy seems to be contented with denying them that alone which shouldn't be. Their primary objective alongside other governmental organizations should be ensuring absolute peace and stability.

This is an arrogant thing for you to state; actually borders on offensive, given the sacrifices of many of the soldiers loosing their lives on the battlefield. I believe in Nigeria and am willing to fight and die for Nigeria in spite of the many insulting idiots online. I believe in Nigeria more than any other country in Africa. Setting aside my personal feelings, here’s why your statement is offensive. I’ll give you one tiny example: you may for instance say that men join Nigeria army because there are few jobs in Nigeria – this is a popular comment here. You may even have had this said to you by a number of Nigeria military men known personally to you. Some soldiers may even take to Social media and by summing up all that they have said, it leaves you no doubt that they joined the Nigeria army due to unemployment. The thing is, these men are alive. Men that have died have no voice. You have no idea how many of them believed of did not believe in Nigeria, how many of them fought and died for Nigerians. You cannot speak for the dead. If you say you’re speaking about those of us alive, you’re already in the realms of denial and would be even more offensive because you would be dismissing weighty moral issues in order to play semantics games.

I didn't mean to be offensive though and I apologize to anyone that might have been offended by words. Nonetheless, the message I was trying to pass is that we should be more concerned about the country. In thoughts and in actions. Even if possible the progress of the country should take precedent in all the choices we make.

A professional army should be able to adapt and adopt new doctrines and equipment. After so many years I believe we shouldn't be talking about this. Unconventional or irregular warfare.  We have to stop pretending that we will find adversaries that play by "conventions" or are in any way "regular." It's just warfare and there may be varying scales of intensity, but we need to adjust the mindset, be fluid and adapt, that what makes militaries prevail in battle.

The "tactical withdrawal", I would've agreed with you if it was a one off thing but it seem to be the Nigerian army language when overwhelmed or defeated. How do you tactically withdraw leaving scarce hardware behind and civilians that have supported you to the mercies of the insurgents. Bureaucracy is in every organisation, even the best militaries, but they are effective.

More useless than the police force is the Nigerian custom service. In fact they are no longer useless but now harmful. Nigeria is a major destination hub for smuggled weapons from Eastern Europe and all other parts of the world and a large percentage of these weapons pass through the ports and manned borders. Some of the shipments are even supervised by some officers of the custom service. Once you know a connect, you can arm and Armour an army within Nigeria.

This is exactly the reason why many police officers have been killed and abducted by the terrorists. They are not equipped to fight anything. Just last month, a police checkpoint was attacked and some of them were killed and abducted.
