MrGoood: A lot of us do. It depends on what you mean by savings. I know Nigerians who save more than N20 M equivalent every year in their 401K or 403B retirement savings. 3 Likes |

The truth is that Nigeria, if you have a good source of income, is a good place to be rich and enjoy life and do 'big man/woman' join. Abroad, you can't escape taxes, monthly rent, bills upon bills. 1 Like |

PDJT: But money plays a very important role in life Even the first class nations you have, with money you can still purchase there citizenship for you and your families I know big ogas here that purchased citizenship for there families and siblings See there is a level of money you can't make in the US that you can still make in Nigeria as a business man into manufacturing, production and several other businesses Infact the dollar transactions these guys do here, even if you work in the west for hundred years you won't make it My own operandi, I am making my money here, go there to rest or do vacation, even if I want to rest several times in a year and keep on praying that a sensible leadership will come up soon or the nation goes into regions Men are cashing out big time here, but na only those that have the eyes to see 4 Likes |

First of all I won’t hit you hard even thou you challenge me in a very bad manner , First of all you re getting thing wrong , I can boost of three business and I always make Enquiry to invests more, I work with budget and budget is different from total income , You can have 50 business partners but your income is just one single record so use your sense, I run a factory in abk and i manufacture but I won’t say what I produce, If I want to relocate today I will save the money separately and won’t tamper with what I already have so be reasonable, You expect me to put big money in a new business, if a business can’t do well with 500,000 it can never do well with 50 million , Even oil, Yes quote me anywhere , If you want too save you have to forget about you touching your savings and spread your incomes then work with it . Example if you have 4 ways of making money , you will sacrifice one income as tools to grow , you don’t tamper with all your investment, one is good to know how far and if it’s bad you can easily move on without feeling heat , Note: I got the business plan that give me major income here on Nairaland and the video is still on Nairaland untouched and the poster is not aware someone was motivated by the video , Stay safe. 1 Like |

It is foolhardy to jump into these kinds of discussions on Nairaland, but what the heck, It's Sunday and I have nothing better to do right now. First, the comparisons on this thread do not make sense. The OP claims to save 22 million Naira a year in Nigeria which would probably put him in the top 0.5% of Nigerian earners in the country. Most of the comparisons here are against low wage/minimum wage earners in the US which makes absolutely no sense at all. Second, In these types of discussions, I like to ask big picture questions. He said he saves 22 million a year and doesn't do this that and the other. FOR WHAT? Why do you need to save that much? This is where the big picture comes in. He has to save for healthcare, retirement, school fees, inflation, calamities, seed money for his business etc. The minimum wage earner you are comparing against in the US is covered for those things provided they are legal and paying taxes. They will be covered if they fall sick and earn social security or a pension in countries like Canada when they retire. Public schools, which are mostly good are paid for by their taxes. One other thing to point out in the big picture. In 2015, the Naira was 200 to the dollar. In 2021, it is exchanging for 480 to the dollar. In six years or less, your savings have devalued by more than 50%. You cannot just compare Naira savings to dollar savings in these types of discussions. A Nigerian in Nigeria is just EXISTING! People in the diaspora are actually LIVING. The difference between existing and living is this. When you exist, you do the things you need to do in order to stay alive; when you live, you do the things you want to do in order to enjoy your life. Existing is all about survival which is what people are currently doing in Nigeria. When will you get a chance to actually live in Nigeria? 15 Likes 1 Share |

Cocao: Thank you for your intelligent contribution. An average Nigerian is always in competition with others about money. Money is not everything. Probably the OP missed the opportunity of going to US some time ago and he want to justify himself that he is still doing well despite the miss. You can't compare people doing well in US or Western World to yourself at all. Your N22m savings to day will loose its value with the depreciation of Naira. Also some abroad may not be earning much but they are living in Properties which could be more than $500k and could be sold if they have to return home |

MrGoood: According to American statistics, "... nearly 70 percent of Americans have less than $1,000 stashed away, according to GOBankingRates' 2019 savings survey.", "most Americans don't have enough savings to cover a $1,000 emergency", and "the typical American household has an average of $8,863 saved up" https://www.cnbc.com/2019/01/23/most-americans-dont-have-the-savings-to-cover-a-1000-emergency.html This is a survey of average, middle-class Americans. This is their total liquid* saving even after 10+ years of working. I can only assume the average would be worse for recent immigrants, though by being focused, a Nigerian immigrant can do much better than the average. I have two good friends who are earning around $70k and $85k annually, and with focused effort, they are able to send $6-8k to build their homes here in Nigeria. If one is focused, it can be done, but it's not easy - even for Americans - to put together that kind of money annually. If you're able to save 22milli here in Nigeria, bros, you are way ahead of most Americans. Then again, if you take that same drive that makes you successful, you could become a millionaire if you move to US. Far too many people on that side borrow money to pay for things way beyond their means - cars, plane tickets, and perhaps funeral expenses... *By definition, liquid does not include home, retirement money, etc. 4 Likes |
